Roy, Give Your Boys A Chance
Feb 07, 2008 | 4:25PM | report this

Whew...what a night!! I don't know that I've ever been in a more electric atmosphere as I experienced in the Dean Dome last night. Yes, they were upper level corner seats. But I would have settled for the last row touchdown seats for last night's game. Unfortunately the last three games I've seen in person at the DD, our Heels have come away with losses. And to make matters even worse, all three losses were to the two teams I hate the worst...dook and UK. So as you can see, I don't get the opportunity to see my Heels in person very often, but when I do, I seem to bring some tough luck with me. So I apologize to all of my Heels fans out there. As much as I hate to say this, I think I'll stay away from the DD in these big games.

Now, on to the topic at hand. I was a bit perplexed at last night's effort from the Heels. Duke took 29 three pointers in that game. And I don't remember a single one of those three's NOT being wide open. I know this has been an ongoing debacle of sorts now for several years in Chapel Hill...."how to do a better job of guarding against the three's?" And much to my discernment, things appear to have slid even further into the abyss. We can blame the players for not getting around the screens. Heck, we can even blame the players for setting themselves up for the screens if that be the case. But I have been giving this a lot of thought. And I think I've come up with an analysis of this situation that most, if not all, UNC fans are not going to like.

I saw in the post game quotes from Roy where he was calling out Wayne for not hitting shots in game time situations. He said something along the lines of, "we have to be able to hit our shots during the game, not just in practice. If we can't do that, maybe we're not as gooda shooters as we thought we were." I'll have a link posted for his actual quote later. But I'm thinking that Roy just may need to heed his own advice. If he thinks his players are not quite as good as they think they are, and if he thinks that the effort just isn't there at times, then maybe, just maybe he needs to take a long hard look in the mirror.

We were beaten by a team that made some nifty "game time" adjustments. Roy is NOT a coach who seems to be able to make these "game time" adjustments. What we do hear from him is that he doesn't like the zone defense. But it's not just that he doesn't like it, he says he's not good at teaching it. What? Did I just read that correctly? So because you don't like the zone, and you don't like teaching the zone, you're just not going to teach it? Now, I may not be a smart man. But to me, that sounds like a lack of effort. It sounds like stubborness. And it sounds unfair to his players. Now, I'm not saying that a zone defense would have won the game for us last night. And they might still have had 29 open looks at three's. However, aside from a few half court traps last night, and a little full court pressure when the game was on the line, Roy made NO adjustments in that game. He didn't give his team a chance. And why?...because he doesn't want to put forth the effort to teach a defense that, not only would give our players a chance to breath a little, but would also throw a #### wrench in the game plan of the opposing team.

Roy, you're a obviously a good man. You're the best recruiter in college basketball. Your players graduate. And you run a squeaky clean program that is second to none. Now, if you will just put forth a little more effort in teaching something you don't like, you may just have the opportunity to become the greatest COACH of all time. Give your boys a chance Roy. Give them the effort they deserve, and you just may get it in return!!

Matt....nice take. I watched part of the game and was rooting for the Heels, more for the fact that I am not a Duke basketball fan. Schadenfreude? In any case, the threes were raining more than PacMan in a Gentleman's Club....I too, was wondering, why no adjustments?

That's coaching 101...in fact, it's one of the things I love about Pete Carroll...he makes great half-time adjustments. Yes, I just inserted a football topic...sorry....I am still in mourning over the end of football.

Sorry you watched an exercise in futility....but you have to admit...the atmosphere rocked! It was insane! What a tremendous rivalry.

Lisa, thanks for stopping by. I posted this blog on the InsideCarolina website earlier. That's actually where I spend most of time now. The fox website has gotten ridiculous. I honestly can't stand the new format...and I'm sick of the seeing "oops".

Roy is an outstanding guy, recruiter, and mentor. But I am understanding more and more that he is NOT a game time coach.

Thanks for stopping by!!

Hi Kelly...yes, the "oops" #### has basically ran me off. I'm sick of it. I know they said something about moving locations...and that it has "temporarily" affected the site. But good grief...have they been moving now for four months?

And I'm all stocked up on alka seltzer...although there is a better remedy for hoops anxiety..it also starts with the letters al...and gives me a warm fuzzy!!!

Thanks for stopping by!!

It was not fun seeing DOOK beat the Heels, but hopefully we wil have at least 2 more shots at them. One in Durham and one for the ACC Championship. A third could potentially come in the NCAA tournament. All of that to say, let's get Ty healthy and make it a run to remember over the next 2+ months.

Ok, I pull for Duke. It goes back years.
Anyhow, being there had to be better than watching on the telly.

The last minute dragged on as the hack a Shaq defense started; it was close for awhile then.

They play again and I'll watch again.

Interesting that these teams haven't met in the big dance!

I think if the Tar Heels had been at full strength against Duke as they where against Clemson, 5 players and 3 refs, then the Heels would have won.

I see what you are saying but at the same time I do not see the effort by our players. To me it does not matter what kind of defense you run if the men on the court do not put forth effort. Ginyard, Hansbrough, Frasor and Stevenson all play hard on the defensive end but the others are all suspect to say the least. The problem I have with the Xs and Os of our defense is when the ball goes in the middle our guards will drop all the way into the lane to help and leave a hot shooting guard open by 20 feet, to me this makes no sense because they do not have time or height to help on a big man by dropping down from the 3 point line and then they do not have time to get back and guard the 3 pointer. It just looks stupid. Any way effort is what is needed, not great defensive strategic changes. And by the way it appears to me to stem from our floor leader, Lawson. Early in the season we appeared to be a more complete team with Frasor. He does not run the offense as well or quickly but his defense and court savy somewhat offset his shortcomings. With Frasor we are different but do not miss a beat. But with Q, it is a guessing game, kinda like when A. Morrison was here, feast or famine.

Great Blog..I log a lot of ACC hours and was at the Canes/UNC game...Watching this edition of UNC BBall is like watching the best intramural team just run and gun...no more than 3 passes and a shot and defense is an afterthought..Yeah they score 90+ but also give up 80+ consistently..They will run up against a sound defensive team in the tourney and launching all those 3's while shooting 20% on them will send them home wondering what happened..I dont respond to a lot of blogs but this one is on the $$$..play the "over" on all Heel games and make your book pay!!!

ABOUT ME

Hello sports fans. My name is Matt Faw. I am from North Wilkesboro, NC. North Wilkesboro is a small town about 90 miles north of Charlotte, NC. I am a United States Marine and was very happy when we were able to follow college and professional football while deployed to Iraq in 2004. I am a die-hard Tar Heel fan. I actually grew up a huge Oakland Raider fan, a closet Chicago Bears fan, and came to be a die-hard Carolina Panthers fan after their inception into the league in 1995. Needless to say, the Raiders nor the Bears have given me much to cheer about over the years, with the exception of few good years. The Panthers have been more competitive on a more consistent basis over the past ten years than either the Raiders or the Bears. Debate on fellow sportsters. mattfaw@gmail
