It sure is a popularity contest.......................I used to feel
the same way about the voting systems in baseball. My example would be
the baseball MVP award. The sports writers would over look a player who
was (statistically) flirting with a triple crown. Instead award the MVP
to a "Juicer" who was only popular with the sports writers. Until recently my thoughts would have been very much right on line with that Joe Morgan belief that the best players deserve to be MVP's and Allstar's................Well that just might be the case next year when they become popular from all of those great stats. Then the Joe Bucks of the broadcast industry can come along and powder their noses and make stars out of them all......................LOL!
But
enough about those of us that are critical about
baseball......................Perhaps we study the game way too much.
Maybe it's the 8,10 or 12 yr. old fans that would rather see their
hometown hero in the Allstar game. Instead of that new player in the league, that no one can pronounce his name and is batting near .400 at the Allstar break. If we had a game for the best players in the league it would have to be called: "The categorically best in the league game" (CBIL) As for me I'll continue to cast my vote every year for my favorite players and the ones that I feel deserve it. Like I always have.
yeah it is a popularity contest as it is with any sport. Take for instance the Pro-bowl last season. Sure the Saints had a terrible season but Marques Colston had better stats than any WR but Larry Fitzgerald and was snubbed. That's what happens in these cases when the fans have control. If there are only 500,000 people in New Orleans but 2.1 million in let's say St. Louis don't you think it's kind of unfair? Coaches and players should be the ones that vote in my opinion.
slshusker, I think I counted 3 Yankees on this years team which is a lot less than past years............There are other options, but each has it's own flaws. When all is done the fan vote is the best for baseball. It's just a popularity contest and the fans get what they want. MLB gets what it wants "popularity."
gambitxxx, There are other models that could be used to determine the MLB Allstar teams such as the run-off vote that they use now or a version of the Borta count like the sports writers use for the MVP ballots...............But all in all it's still better to have a vote, than to let a small group of sports writers and coaches do it for us.
Maybe some kind of Electorial College format.............Naaaah that doesn't work either!

Yes the All Star Game has become about as popular as American Idol in terms of being absolutely meaningless .
Perhaps the most banal and superificial program on tv ?
You know we're both bright guys why don't we just split the country down the middle and forget about the votes and the voters ?
The only other thing that could be worse in terms of its balloting , may well the Presidential nominational process . Which by all accounts has become haphazard and id*iotic.
All Star Game in all reality it's not what it's alleged to be.
Hey Al, could you imagine having that cast of characters picking our Allstar games? There's some kind of twisted punch line in there somewhere...........LOL!

Hey gambitxx, "Ideally" that would be the best for all. I agree with the Yankee/Red Sox issue as well there needs to be a system to keep each group of fans happy.
'm always here and about, mostly about. Usually I am too lazy to post blogs here unless I get inspired. But it's still a nice place to visit.
