Since the Ghana game I have been a traveling mad man. Every single hotel is booked in the entire country. So, the trunk of my car is the best option. I'm growing fond of my little trunk. It will be hard to say goodbye. I have watched all the games from a different environment. A bar, highway rest stop, hotel lobby, a van with satelite TV, art museum...everywhere you go is a great place to watch.
I assume everyone watched the USA / Ghana game. What a rush. It was so amazing to see all the USA fans cheering for our team. I would say there were about 20,000 fans inside the stadium...and a few thousand outside as well. It was a tough ticket.
And the game...not the best performance. I'm just happy Clint Dempsey scored a goal. Now the US team can go home knowing they scored at least one goal all by themselves. I wanted to see the team that played against Italy. The heart, passion and desire they showed during that game was what they needed against Ghana. Long balls to McBride didn't work. Reyna got smacked. Donovan did not step up.
Bobby Convey and Eddie Johnson sparked the offense but it came a bit too late. I was a bit suprised to see John O'Brien left out of the line up. Obviously this is just an opinion. I have no idea what was Bruce Arena's was thinking...and thats why I'm not the coach.
three hours and counting. its crazy here....the atmosphere is beyond normal. take the most exciting nba or nfl game and multiply that by twelve....thats how awesome it is here in nuremburg.
im tired of watching games from a spot close to the game, but still outside the stadium. im so psyched for todays game between usa and ghana. im walking around town in nuremberg and making friends with anyone i see in red white and blue. we had our first shower in 66 hours...it was in a gas station.
im feeling good about the game, sent a text to a couple of my friends on the team...pablo, ben, albright. im curious to see who is starting today. who will replace pope and mastroeni. will john o brien play. will keller play out of his mind.
this is it...i can only imagine how excited the usa team is. a win could put us through to the second round. if that happens...i may need to find a replacement for f.c fox.....we film our next episode on the same day of the second round game.
im having the time of my life. i feel very fortunate to be at this game and be part of us soccer history. about 10 of my friends from soccer will be bbq ing before the game. more sausage. perhaps ill throw an orange in there so i dont pass out from lack of vitamin c.
oh yeah...dont forget to watch me tomorrow night on f.c fox. will someone tivo it for me while im gone..
wow, what a trip. if anyone is curious what its like to chase games at the world cup, please come talk to me. i arrived tuesday morning with a just a carry on backpack, rented a sweet car with a big trunk and charged to cologne for the england sweden match. im bound to find tickets right...no way. the cheapest ticket was 750 euros. the sweden fans all organized a huge parade ...it was amazing, a sea of yellow screamed their way to the stadium...still no tickets. so i watched the game from a local pub and ate way too much sausage. i look for a hotel or motel or cottage or park bench...i ended up in the -2 star back seat of my car. luxurious.
when i awoke at 6 in the morning to the pungent odor of my friends sneakers, ivan guerrer[who i played with in college], i thought i was back on survivor. no water, no food, no shower, and we smelled like elephants. we cruised to frankfurt for the argentina netherlands. no tickets, but lots of bright orange. we made our way to the city center to watch the game from a makeshift stadium on the river. image the entire hudson river lined with orange for netherlands and light blue for argentina. it was a mad house. singing, horns, whistles, shaking buses....and this is only the first round. argentina should have won...oh well.
its 2am and we decide to sleep in the parking lot for night two as well. i ate a banana.
What's up everyone. I have to admit, my life has been put on hold in order to watch all these amazing World Cup games. I can barely make time to film F.C Fox. And now, I actaully get to fly to Germany to watch the USA battle Ghana on Thursday. In case anyone is worried about the result of the game, don't be, I'm confident and I'm also bringing some good luck. My all time record with the US Mens National Team (watching from inside the stadium....of course) is 12-1-1. So, I'm feeling good about this. So keep an eye out for a big mop of hair in the seats when you watch the game. What I love best about this first round of games are all the great goalkeeping. Keller, Hislop, Cech, Dida, and Van Der Sar have all played great...especially with this new Adidas ball. More importantly, all the upsets. Ghana, South Korea, Ecudaor, Australia. I like rooting for the under dogs. Stay tuned for another update from Frankfurt in a couple days. And don't forget to catch me on F.C Fox every Friday night at 7:30 pm
