Major Sport Changes
Jun 27, 2006 | 2:11PM | report this
Is the game not like how you remembered it? Would you like to see it sped up or see some more life in it? Here are some minor changes that could make your favorite sport more enjoyable.

Soccer
Ditch: Dives–Nothing is worse than watching soccer and seeing someone take a dive. Be a man. It’s supposed to be an honorable game. Treat it like such.

Add: Another ref or two to help get these calls right. That would be less expensive than say Instant Replay.

Football
Ditch: Holding- If it’s happening on every play, just make it legal. It slows the game down way too much.

Add: 10 Second Celebrations-If the celebration last longer than 10 seconds, call a 15 yard Excessive Celebration penalty. Come on, you know you want to know what Chad Johnson is going to do next.

Baseball
Ditch: Designated Hitter-If you can hit, you should be able to pick up a glove and play some D. If you can pitch inside, maybe you should get hit every now and then. You aren't an athlete if you DH, you are just taking batting practice every third inning.

Add: Salary Cap-Come on, you really think the AL is better? They just spend more. The AL East could fund the War of Terror and still have some money left over to build a few hundred schools. Baseball will never be considered a fair sport until a Salary Cap is in place.

Basketball
Ditch: Million Dollar Shoe Contracts-Anyone who knows shoes knows that no Iverson was a tight shoe. The T-Macs are ugly and the Jordan’s keep getting worse. Don’t even get me started on the horrifying LeBrons. I would rather play barefoot. Put the attention back to where it belongs...the play.

Add: Rules to the game-Remember when traveling was traveling? Now it’s a way to make it on the plays of the day. I didn’t know you could take three steps after you stopped dribbling. This is what we are teaching our kids. I know it may add some pizzazz, but please call it like more like the NBA and less like And 1.

Interesting ideas. I agree dead on with soccer, and about holding in football. However, I think the TD celebrations should be penalized if they go out of hand. Players shouldn't be dancing and being me me me. They should celebrate, but nothing crazy,

I don't like the DH either, but I doubt that wil go away. A salary cap would be nice, but it won't probably happen.

Shoes, I don't care, But I would like to see traveling again.

soccer....dont know, dont watch it much....but the highlights tell me they learned to flop from nba players like bill laimbeer and vlade divac.
nfl...holding happens on every play, but that doesnt mean it should be ok, otherwise, you have.....
nba...travelling....it happened on every play from about 1988 on, so the league decided it was ok, but only for certain players at certain times, now it's just ludicrous in the sense that everyone does it all the time.
as for the football celebrations, i'm more than ok with a team celebration, i just cant stand the "i caught the pass in the endzone, so i'm the only guy that matters" syndrome. i've said this for 6 months now.....if chad johnson catches a TD pass, ELEVEN guys did their job, not just him. therefore, either act like you've been there before, and expect to be there again, or, celebrate with your teammates, who allowed you to be there in the first place.
designated hitter....i'm torn on whether to get rid of it altogether.....something that just popped into my mind, is that if a player is a DH, he has to be over 35, and certified as a liability defensively. at least that would keep able bodied players from tanking it on D just so they dont have to play in the field.

MR NFL and cuziffer: 10 second celebration gives time for all eleven players to get in the endzone if they want a piece of the action. I love them! I think they are good for the game as long as they don't disrespect the other team or it's fans in the process.

ed- not necessarily...if you have an 80 yard touchdown run or reception, i doubt those 330 lb. linemen are gonna truck it down there in time to get in on the dance recital. i also have seen enough occasions where the player who scored the TD have run away from teammates to do his solo act. again, i have no problem with a team celebration, but i think it can wait until everyone gets back to the sideline, with the rest of the team. terrell owens mocking the cowboys by posing on the star was not a team celebration, nor did he have any desire to include them in his ego trip. i also have no problem with spiking the ball, tossing it into the crowd, high fiving teammate(s), or something like that, but all the pre-rehearsed dances and impersonations have gotten out of hand in my opinion.
