Should Doc get packin'?
Jan 11, 2007 | 5:31PM | report this

Rumors have been floating around the streets of Boston about Doc Rivers. Doc has been thrown under the boat and being blamed for the Celtics poor season. Yes, Doc has not been the best of coaches all of his career, and with the Celtics has a .483 win percentage and 4th in the atrocious Atlantic East. They are only 3 games out of first place with a 12-22 record. Great division ey?
The Celtics are without six players and their two leading point scorers. Injuries to Kendrick Perkins and Al Jefferson have been off and on throughout the year and some injuries to Ryan Gomes haven't helped the C's. They are playing C ball right now, and is it because the lack of good coaching by Doc? Or is it the young and unexperienced starting lineup (Telfair, Rondo, Green, Gomes, and Jefferson) with an average age of 22? Doc Rivers has had to deal with endless injuries all season long, and I believe he is doing his best job to win games for the struggling Celtics. There was talk about firing Doc, but who would they hire? And is Doc truly doing THAT bad with what he is working with.
The injury plagued Celtics are the problem here, not totally Doc River's. Allen's meaningless dunk lost him his season and will haunt his career and also the Celtics, after drafting him 1st round in 2003. The Celtics need to go on another winning streak and take control of the Atlantic. Also I hope to see Doc finish the year at the TD Banknorth Garden.

Rivers over Brady?
Jan 10, 2007 | 6:56PM | report this
As the votes for the were tallied, Tom Brady, was surprisingly not selected to the 2007 AFC Pro Bowl roster. Philip Rivers or Philip "Rio" was named to the team for the first time in his short career. Rivers is in his first starting season and third season in the NFL. Does this NC State standout deserve to make the Pro Bowl over the legendary Tom Brady?
Rivers threw for 3388 yards this year along with 22 touchdown passes and 9 interceptions. Not too bad from a rookie. But let's look at Tom's Brady numbers... Brady threw for 3529 which was a disappointment from last year and short 581 yards. Brady also threw two more touchdowns, yet two more INT's last year as well. Brady had an adequate rushing year. He ran for 102 yards on 49 attempts(lets not forget kneel downs). Rivers on the other hand ran for 49 yards on 48 attempts. Brady wasn't afraid to scramble for those extra yards. We all remember when Tom Brady (Tom Brady we are saying) JUKED out one of the leagues strongest linebacker's in Brian Urlacher. Brady also has that awareness of Peyton Manning, and catches many teams for five yards on "too many men on the field."
"Rio" played a solid year as well leading the chargers to a 14-2 record and the number one seed in the much harder AFC. But was it Rivers who carried the Chargers as Brady did with the Patriots? No, we all know LaDanian Tomlinson who had a breakout year setting the record of touchdowns scored in a regular season (28). LT threw two touchdowns and is credited with 15% of River's yards. He was the third leading receiver behind Antonio Gates and Eric Parker, but he had the 2nd most completions. This is because the screen passes thrown to LT. LT averaged nearly 10 yards after the catch and the yards are credited to Rivers. Rio had very few big plays this year, nor did he deserve a Pro Bowl.
Wide Receivers, the Patriots weakest position or maybe Punter when you have the incredible Ken Walter back there. Brady came into the year with possibly one of the worst core receivers. On the other hand, Rivers started the season with decent wide-outs with Eric Parker, the best tight-end in the league, Antonio Gates, and veteran Keenan McCardell. Brady had Reche Caldwell and Troy Brown to work with. Like Mangini, Brady had less to work with. He made Reche have his best year in his career and made Troy Brown the all-time reciever on the New England Patriots. Jabar Gaffney, Chad Jackson, Brandon Childress. Brady had several receivers throughout the 2006 season and he had to work with them, and he did and had another solid year.

   TOM BRADY OVER PHILIP RIVERS.
