college basketball, young players are not meeting the challenge
Apr 15, 2008 | 1:00PM | report this
Now i know that some people are going to be like this guy has no idea how hard it is to play college basketball on the big stage with all these expectations when you are 18 years old coming out of highschool, and you are right i have never played highschool or college ball on any stage, but i would like to think that i know a little bit about pressure and performing at the highest level being put int the position of leadership at a young age and having to put on your best effort. I am a former marine and current national guard soldier who has served his country for almost seven years now. and while i,ve never played basketball or football at the highschool or college level i would like to think of myself as a student of the game and not only do i know alot i can play a little bit to . So when i say what i,m about to say believe me this is something i have seen over the years get worse and worse. today,s young highschool players all want to go to the best school and play for the best coach and win the most games. And while that is understandable it,s also unrealistic one day somebody is going to have to stand up and believe that the talent they have can turn around a team as well as contribute to a squad with eight to ten all americans on it. Because really how much are u being tested ,how much of your leadership ability does it take to pass the ball to the next all american on the team who averaged 30 points in highschool. and i already know whats coming next ,"you don,t know how hard it is to play for duke,or kansas , carolina" ect ect. and on that big stage on national TV i trully understand that argument , but the problem is that we are all finding out that  all these great young players who had all this ability never really got to use it. Wether it was because that had to wait for two or three years to play or because there were so many leaders or great players on the floor no one really had the chance to really take ahold of that leadership role. Now you do have some rare cases in chris paul, deron williams ,kevin durant, and if you want to go back in the day micheal jordan, patrick ewing. Who were great players on great teams but got enough of that leadership role and it followed them to the pros, and that,s the great injustice because the security you.re going to have in college you,re not going to have in the pros and if you have not really had to lead a team back from the depths or out of a rough spot when you get to that pro team who won 20 games the year before and you,re the saviour you,re in trouble because that,s a challenge you never took so you don,t know how to take that team where it needs to go. You look at a player like steph curry from davidson who along aith jason richards led that team all the way to the elite eight and almost to the final four. Now that is a high quality player at a mid-major who flourished and at the same time so did his team. He didn,t say i didn,t get into VA tech like my dad so this is going to suck he made it what he wanted it to be and my guest is that same determination is going to follow him to the pros when he goes, but because he chose to come there he mad a difference and changed that school,s culture others should follow in his footsteps. Don,t be so quick to look at the jersey because when it comes down to it that dosen,t matter it,s what the people in those jerseys put out on the court that matters . and when that player gets to the pros he or she wil know what it takes to be a leader and how to take that team from wherever it is to the top.Because for to long our young players have not been prepared because they have not been challenged and want challenge themselves. and one more thing not every player that comes out of the storied conferences and programs make it to the big time anyway.
