Okay, studio execs...here's the pitch. It's another version of the classic sports flick "The Longest Yard," only now it's in reality show format. Michael Vick arrives in prison, is recruited (forced) to play for the inmate football squad, and hijinks ensue.
Now I admit, I'm that guy who likes the recent movie version better than the original. I like Sandler and Rock, love seeing mega-man Bob Sapp as a gentle, crying giant. I like the cameos by the real athletes (pro wrestlers included), except of course for Bill Romanowski, who I never liked. With a star-studded cast like that, why wouldn't any sports guy love that movie?
Of course I'm thinking ahead because I honestly believe Mike Vick may actually see prison time because of his recent situation. I have read many indictments in my day, and I think the case against Vick is pretty solid. The charges do not include "animal cruelty" - none of the allegations directly say Michael Vick himself took the life of any animal. They include the possibility that that may have occurred too, but the charges against him involve the trafficking of the animals across state lines for the cruel bloodsport of dogfighting, and the evidence to support those charges is abundant and strong.
Why is the evidence solid? Because there's no disputing that Michael Vick owned the property on Moonlight Rd. There's also documented proof of his association/ownership of BadNewz Kennels, the legal front for the underground fighting operation. There is no mistaking that he is associated with the property and the business in question. Therefore, it doesn't even take a jury to tell me that he's guilty by association. Even if he pleads ignorance, he's still guilty by association (hey, it never got me out of a speeding ticket, why should it get him out of 6 years behind bars?).
On top of the solid evidence against him, there are three cooperating witnesses who do place Vick at some fights. That's just icing on the cake. Because of what's stacked against him, I believe Michael Vick may be that rare athlete who actually is held accountable for his actions by a court of law. He won't rot forever in prison, but he will do more time than Jamal Lewis.
I'm no psychic, I'm no legal expert, but this is what I believe. I've heard he's devastated by the charges against him, and very sorry for the trouble the situation is now causing. But after six years of documented involvement in this cruel sport, he never felt bad enough to end his involvement in it, so I'm not buying a minute of it.
Based on his comments on the subject, maybe Vick can eventually recruit Clinton Portis to be his running back in the clink...the guards won't stand a chance.
I'm an educated proud Southerner who loves just about all sports (haven't played Jai-Alai or curling yet...stay tuned). If you really want my attention, let's talk Tennessee Titans, Vanderbilt Commodores, NASCAR, and soccer.
When I'm not working, I'm generally at home, hanging with my perfect little baby boy, my beautiful wife, and my cerebrally-ch allenged, but incredibly awesome dog. What can I say, I've got it good!
I hope you enjoy my random sports related thoughts.
