Tomlinson helped Chargers more than Rivers
Jan 22, 2008 | 6:45AM | report this
In the wake of the Chargers' loss to the Patriots in the AFC Championship Game, the public images of Philip Rivers and LaDainian Tomlinson have gone in opposite directions. The brash, trash-talking Rivers, who now admits to playing the game with one ACL, has been fast-tracked for canonization, while the humble Tomlinson, who played briefly before shutting it down, has been vilified as a soft, selfish teammate who pouted on the bench because he couldn't contribute.

On the San Diego Union-Tribune Web site, here's a typical comment about superhero Philip Rivers, from a Charger fan named Blue& Gold:

"Wow!!!! That's giving it up for the team!! This kid has some heart!!
Do you think either one of the Manning punks would've had the stones to do what he just did for his team mates? No way in hell, not in a million years.
Now, maybe Rivers will get the respect he deserves, not only as one of the best QBs ever at this stage of his career, but as one of the toughest."

Sorry, pal, but playing a game without an ACL doesn't make you tough; it makes you dumb. Discretion, as they say, is the better part of valor, and Rivers showed no discretion -- and contributed mediocre stats from the quarterback position -- while Tomlinson had the good sense to admit, "Ya know what, I can't go. Let Michael Turner and Darren Sproles play."

And so what happened? What production did the Chargers get from these respective positions? Rivers goes 19-37, with no TDs and 2 INTs, leading the Chargers to four measly field goals, even though the team won the turnover battle against the highest-scoring team in NFL history. Meanwhile, Tomlinson's backups rushed for 99 yards on 21 carries, averaging 4.7 yards per carry, which is EXACTLY what Tomlinson averaged during the regular season. So, Rivers grits it out, hobbles around like a wounded wildebeest for four quarters and earns the everlasting praise of talking heads like "Mad Dog" Chris Russo, who spent Monday drooling about how much he respected Rivers's play, and how he could "quarterback my team any day." On the other side, Tomlinson get vilified (and rightly so) for not standing up and rooting on his teammates. At the end of the day, however, who really helped his team more?

A dispassionate observer would have to say Tomlinson.

LT may have come up small in the teammate department, but at least he was wise enough to let other people - namely, his BACKUPS - do their jobs. Rivers, on the other hand, tries to pull some Curt Schilling bloody sock routine. The problem, of course, is that Schilling actually pitched great in Game 6 of the 2004 American League Championship Series. Rivers threw like...oh, I don't know, a guy playing without an anterior cruciate ligament?

Yesterday Rivers revealed that he had arthroscopic surgery last week to clean out loose cartilage, which enabled him to play.

“If I don't do that Monday, I had no chance of playing,” Rivers said.

Um, good?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but one of the chief reasons why football teams have backup quarterbacks is for instances when the starter has misplaced his ACL. I know football is a manly-man sport, and guys are supposed to play with bones sticking through their eyeballs, but this macho charade cost the Chargers a very good chance to beat the New England Patriots and advance to the Super Bowl. Billy Volek, who relieved St. Rivers after he martyred himself in last week's game versus the Colts, went 3 of 4 and led the team to a go-ahead touchdown on the road in that fourth quarter. Would it have been so bad to let him have a shot at the Patriots? After all Volek, who's started 10 games in his career and passed for 2,486 yards in 2004, brought both ACLs to the game on Sunday.

If Volek played in place of Rivers (particularly in the second half, when it was clear Rivers was struggling to move), would the Chargers have won? We'll never know, because Norv Turner agreed to roll out a hurt quarterback with a severe case of megalomania. Who convinced Turner that Philip Rivers, the 18th-highest rated quarterback in the NFL this season, was so irreplaceable that he had to play him, even with one leg?

We're going back a ways, but one of the all-time great Man-Up stories is about Hall of Fame linebacker Jack Youngblood, who played for the Rams with a broken leg in both the 1980 NFC Championship Game AND in the Super Bowl. That's hardcore, yet people don't talk about it that much; not nearly as much as Schilling and his bloody sock. Ya know why? Part of the reason, of course, is that Schilling is a self-aggrandizing loudmouth, while Youngblood isn't. But the biggest reason is that Schilling's team won the title that year, but Youngblood's didn't. This is but one example of how it's commendable to do whatever it takes to win -- just as long as you actually DO win.

You can say Philip Rivers was heroic for playing the AFC title game with no ACL, and you can say LaDainian Tomlinson hurt his team by not cheering from the bench. But really, who hurt his team more? The wanna-be hero who didn't get it done, or the affirmed superstar who let his backups take a shot?

Howzit Crookd?!

I just responded to your other blog and this one concurs with what I said about LT on the other blog. Glad to see someone else agreed with that. I know Rivers didn't do well in your eyes, but I still give him credit for staying in and giving it his all. Volek definitely could have came in. But then it would be the 'What if' syndrome.

Anyways, great take!

Storm, I don't know how an objective observer could think Rivers did well. 19-37 with two picks and no TDS? I'd give more credit to him for playing hurt if he were Peyton Manning and the backup was Jim Sorgi. Is there a dropoff between a one-legged Philip Rivers and a healthy Billy Volek? It sort of reminded me of the Jags/Pats playoff game two years ago, when Leftwich had been out for weeks, but came back and started ahead of Garrard. Leftwich was completely ineffective. Unless your starter is Joe Montana and your backup is Jim Druckenmiller, you have to go with who's healthy. And who's healthy isn't the guy who had surgery on Monday.

I like your take on the game ceptin the facts that Rivers heroic play .kept this team in the game.. the players have great respect for Rivers Since his break-out year year LT has turned from a humble great team player to an ego-maniac-self absorbed individual. if he was so benevolent ... why did he sit on the bench and pout... i can back up my points since i predicted the pointspread victory and i also said Volek should be the man check MY BLOG PRIOR TO THE GAME ... NOT LIKE MOST MONDAY QB'S... ..

In defense of Rivers and the Bolts , by makin' an impreesion on his team and fans it will now be his team not LT's...AND FURTHER MORE HE WILL BE IN THE LEAGUE 10 YEARS LONGER THEN LT (THERE WAS ANOTHER RB THAT YOU ALL CALLED THE GREATEST EVER HE PLAYS IN SEATTLE I THINK HIS NAME IS ALEX OR SHANE OR SOMETHIN ) This is not a death sentance for LT he can come back next year and play team football and help to gp deep in the playoffs . The Bolts are in elite status ....with a proven team leader ...
further -more one needs only to look at New England's Maroney ... how many yds would he deliver if he had LT'S carries...he should of played hurt and if not he should of been the best cheerleader ever ...

Tiger, the Chargers didn't need Rivers to be a hero. They needed a QB who could turn 3 Brady INTs into at least one touchdown. 19-37 with two picks and two TDs isn't heroic. It's mediocre. In fact, I'd venture to say the only mediocre positions on the Chargers whole team on Sunday were Qb and head coach.

The party line is that everyone in the Chargers locker room now loves Philip Rivers. Privately, I'd have to imagine quite a few of them wish Billy Volek had played, for at least the second half.

LET'S BE HONEST DA CHARGERS WERE NOT GOIN' TO WIN THAT GAME .. I PREDICTED A POINT-SPRED VICTORY THEN A TONGUE IN CHEEK BOLTS WIN.

I agree that Billy Volek may have taken them to victory , but that's arm chair qb stuff...I studied film on the red zone follies. it was basically bad play callin', two questionable calls and not calls, good defense, and good old fashion luck.

The Bolts are now an elite team and will be a good bettin' team next year . as for Billy Volek I wish and pray he would be traded to my viks ... ...

WE all have to give credit to the teams that make the final 4 of a league of 31 ... I know i dont, but we all should ....Bolt fans should be crazy happy .....
good job .... CHAAAAAAAAAAAARGERS....

Tiger, is it really armchair QB stuff when the starting QB is obviously hurt? As I watched the game, I kept saying to my buddies that they should switch to Volek. If I'd known that Rivers had no ACL in one of his legs, I would have been even more adamant. If I'm a Chargers fan and I learn now that my starting QB was playing in that condition, I'd be ticked. I watched Roethlisberger struggle last year when he obviously shouldn't have been playing. It's not commendable to go out there when you're injured. There's a difference between playing hurt and playing injured. Rivers was injured, and when you play injured, you injure your team. Certainly Rivers did nothing to refute that characterization.

I know LT was disappointed he could not play but he should have been moving up and down the side lines encouraging his teammates rather than bundled up on the bench with his helmet on.

OUTASHAPE.... AMEN.... any one who has been in a locker room or on the field at any level would agree....

Crooked... i can't diagree with you more.. believe me the Chargers will be a great team next year and hopefully LT will get his big head shrunk and go back to bein' a hell o####uy and football player ... and the next time some #### TV commentator or blogger calls an active player the greatest ever ...look to that dude in Seattle and LT....AND GOD FORBID BRET FAVRE....

I know everyone is jumping on Rivers and LT, but if you want to win games, your DEFENSE needs to stop the other team from scoring. I thought SD's defense could stop Brady and his cohorts- boy was I wrong.
Unless LT's helmet makes the cool breathing noises too, he needs to get rid of the facemask.

Nugg, the Chargers D played very well. They forced 3 turnovers and held Brady and Moss in check. Maroney certainly did better than expected, but if you can hold the Pats to 21 points, you've done a good job. One of the Pats TDs was after a Rivers INT deep in SD territory. Otherwise, the San Diego D was stout most of the afternoon

I agree with most of what you are saying crookd. I give credit to Rivers for trying and the fact is that he did move the ball well. He couldn't do anything in the red zone. Is that on him alone? I don't think so. He didn't have his top two weapons when it comes to scoring TD's. He also was the victim of poor play calling. How do you not throw the fade to Jackson at leat once? The guy towers over his defender. Just throw up a jump ball and let him do his job!

As for L.T., here is what I answered someone who was trash talking about him:

"As for L.T. I have to look at his history before I try to take his manhood away from him. First of all, he has started every game for all seven years of his career. Not too many tailbacks can say that. Second, he had a sprained MCL last week and had to come out of the game. He tried to use it during the week and he said it would tighten up on him. He decided to "tough it out" and play on Sunday. On the first play, he worsened the sprain and went back to the huddle holding his knee in pain. He tried one more run play and one screen pass and found that he could not cut or accelorate as he is used to. Not being a power back, quickness and explosion are keys to his success. He said after the game that "a 100% Michael Turner and a 100% Darren Sproles are better than a 50% Me." You can't argue with that. If he had a history of doing this, I would doubt him. I think his history shows that he is a competitor and wanted the ball. He just couldn't help the team. Notice, you don't hear any teammates calling him out."

The part about him sitting.

... on the bench turns out to be much to do about nothing. His teammates and other attending the game have been quoted as saying he did get up and talk to Michael Turner and his other teammates. CBS just gets a better story if they only show him sitting and apparently pouting. Other channels have showed him up and around througout the game.

Thanks for giving him the benifit of the doubt.

Yeah, but they didn't get it done. I was really hoping they would, too. They did as good as anyone else ( Except for Philly, Baltimore and the Giants), but the end result is what counts, and it was just another "W" for the pats. ####-hum.
Each team has 2 ways to beat other teams, Offense and Defense, and both of SD's proved inept.

Thanks for calling me an objective observer, I try my hardest to be that. I... hope you meant it.

Yeah, Rivers had that bad of a performance(considering the stats), and yeah Volek would have been the more healthier/logical choice, but Rivers still played well, and that showed heart and committment to his teammates. Tony Casillas had no complaints, but accolades. To me that means something. Maybe....I'm not objective. Oh well. Great post nonetheless.

Crookd, you are hitting the nail right on the head. The Chargers are probably the deepest team in the league and one of the most talented. With a decent head coach, this team could have beaten the almighty Pats on a day when they weren't quite clicking. Every team is bound to have an off game and the Pats and Brady were off Sunday. The Chargers should have been able to muster more than 4 field goals with the gifts given to them by Brady. Turner simply blew it.

I am a HUGE fan of the Pats and I need to get to the Super Bowl. Does anyone know where to get tickets?...I have been looking around and I found an online auction site that is selling them for a pretty good price http://www.charityfolks.com/cfaucti
ons/auction_verticalngo.asp?slrid=6
12 . They also have some pretty wicked party tickets (Carmen Electra, Playboy models etc..) I heard that if you buy from these guys you can deduct the tickets from your taxes (I might not have enough to write off) …I guess the company that is selling them, www.EarthLab.com is a not for profit company. I checked them out, they have a cool website, I think they have some kind of association with Mario Batali, and Al Gore. I also took their carbon footprint test which is a pretty cool function. I am going to check my score again after I fly to the super bowl and I bet my carbon output is higher oh well it is worth it. Anyway if you know of a better deal or another site let me know, I will take any seats.

Rivers was right to want to play. Any competitor wants to be out there when it's all on the line, and that's how it should be. That's the mentality that leads them to excel. But, once he showed that he could not perform, then the coaches should have pulled him and inserted the healthy player that gave them the best chance to win. It's admirable on Rivers' part to play in pain, but dumb on the part of the Chargers' coaching staff to not play the most capable player.

And, by the way, someone should inform Blue & Gold that the elder Manning, holder of a ten year starting streak, played with a broken jaw.

Playing injured is often seen as a mark of manliness or dedication. Heck, I'll admit to a great deal of admiration for people who have done such myself on occasion. In the end, though, it's probably more foolish than anything else.

HOWEVER! LT sitting on the bench like a dispassionate observer, a man without a face, did as much of a disservice to the Chargers as did Rivers playing on one ACL. LT's leadership, if he ever had any, was non-existent, and thus the somewhat demoralized Chargers failed to capitalize on the three Brady interceptions. They had no support from one of the supposed leaders of their team. That hurt worse than a strained MCL.

Crook,
Well put buddy. I am a longtime die hard Charger fan. Why is everybody saying LT pouted he didn't at all. He is a gamer wanted to play but he put the team first he gave his team the best chance to win. Rivers should come out for the 2nd half at all. Volek was ready to go and is a better backup as well than most backup qb's in the NFL. You are so right about Youngblood and Schilling. More people need to be like JY humble. LT is humble for the most part. Now instead of handing the ball off to the ref when he scores he give it a little flip off his hands. He doesn't showboat like most players in the NFL and we know there are plenty. Great post buddy. Keep it up you call it like you see it.
