Wow! Another game for La Viola
involving a wow! This time Prandelli’s
charges manage to beat Juventus in Turin
in a blinder o####ame. Five goals,
brilliant play, tactical shenanigans and edge of the seat excitement. Oh and that is the team the Blues is going to
play on Thursday.
The Stadio Olimpico in Turin is ripe for a tough
European six pointer. With Milan only managing a draw
and Roma winning three points is vital in the hunt for the prime European
spots. A decent and vocal crowd and high
expectations greeted the opening whistle.
Ranierii’s eleven is still
missing some key pieces in the middle and at the back, although still strong. Buffon comes into the ‘keepers spot with a
makeshift back four of Zebina, Legrottaglie, Grygera and Molinaro. Midfield sees Camoranesi and Palladino provide
the attacking flair with Sissoko and Zanetti providing the solidity. Del Piero and Trezeguet partner up
front.
Prandelli; without star forward
and with a UEFA Cup Night in midweek still picks an attacking eleven.
Frey retains the ‘keeper’s jersey
and has a familiar; if not first choice; back four in front of him of Ujfalusi
and Gobbi wide with Gamberini and Kroldrup in the middle. Kuzmanovic, Donadel and Montolivo make up the
midfield with Pazzini leading a three man attack flanked by Santana on the
right and top notch utility player Jorgenson on the left.
Juventus start off sharpish in an
open game, Kuzmanovic almost buries Santana’s cross and Zebina almost finishes
a move he starts with a header just over Frey’s bar.
Fiorentina lay it out and make
you beat them, they play the same home and away and don’t change much as they
profess to be ‘unable to protect a lead’.
They get the ball out wide and
aim for dangerous crosses or cutting runs into the area with midfielders coming late in
support.
Juventus are crossers too and
they also like to play it quickly forward through the middle.
The game unfolds kindly for a
hard working and ebullient Fiorentina, Santana’s runs causing Molinaro all
sorts of problems, Pazzini is a handful for a less than solid back four and
Fiorentina push up or drop back very well as a team. La Viola’s runs at Juve cause all sorts of
problems, Buffon has to be at his best when he’s clearly not 100%.
Another direct run and a lovely one
two sees Gobbi beat Buffon for the opener.
Pushing up from the right back berth the midfielder uses Jorgenson as a
foil before a continuation of his run, a static Juve defence and a great return
from the Dane combine well and a neat finish bulges the back of the net.
More of the same without actually
scoring fills the next ten minutes.
Juve are struggling to mount
meaningful attacks and seeing little of the ball. A free kick from the left sees Frey flail
weakly at the ball in, it drops kindly to Sissoko who uses his Kuyt inspired
Kung Fu and beats Frey with a spectacular overhead kick.
Fiorentina’s fragility comes to
the fore, they still go forward but lack the edge they had in the first half
and Juventus gradually neutralize the threat and finish the half even on honours
and possession. The stalemate continues
into the second half without either team threatening greatly.
Juve look most dangerous
exploiting the space on the break and some tweaking from the bench moves some
players around and pays handsome dividends.
Palladino; exerting more
influence as the game wears on; plays in Molinaro on the right, his back post
cross confuses the Viola centre backs and allows Camoranesi the opportunity to volley
a scorcher in for a two-one lead.
Fragility and glass jaws aside Fiorentina
keep on plugging. Prandelli makes some
astute changes and Osvaldo gets his shot (courtesy of Ujfalusi and the
utilitarian nature of Jorgenson who slots into the right back role!) and the
trickery of Santana is swapped for the pace of Papa Waigo.
Ranierii shuts up shop with the
removal if Camoranesi for Nocerino and he swaps guile for size when Del Piero
is replaced by Iaquinta.
Fiorentina keep attacking and
Juventus keep defending, surely they can hold on at home for another twenty
minutes.
The Bianconeri are woefully
mistaken.
Osvaldo runs at Juve and the
loose ball bounces for Pazzini, he lays it intelligently wide to Papa Waigo who
is given time to take the three touches he needs to slot it beyond Buffon.
Fiorentina keep attacking and
Juventus keep defending, surely they can hold on at home for another fifteen
minutes. Iaquinta had a free kick go
just wide.
The Bianconeri are woefully
mistaken.
La Viola just doesn’t quit, they
may slow up a little but they just keep on attacking. The two substitutes combine again to bag the
injury time winner. Papa Waigo’s pace
allows him some space on the right and he crosses well for Osvaldo to head past
Buffon at the near post.
Ranierii has seen his side slump
to one point in three games and seen Fiorentina close the points gap. Injuries have been a factor but shutting up
shop and then conceding two late on is shoddy at best. The Bianconeri can complain about cheats and
punishment all they want, they have a fine squad, good players and a good
manager, they just aren’t playing as well as they can recently.
Prandelli will be fashionably
delighted. Smart changes freshen up his
side and his tactics were carried out in exemplary fashion by his players. The side is still not at full strength yet
worked hard and created much. La Viola
are young side sprinkled with experience and style. They play a good brand of football with some
good energy and commitment. Five years ago
they were defunct and now they have climbed back into the upper echelons of
Serie A and Europe. They are always susceptible when ahead but do
score freely.
Expect that at home on Thursday
night they play with the same attacking and committed 4 3 3 against Everton; even
though the personnel will be different
Let’s talk La Viola, ACF Fiorentina, the Serie A side from Florence. They play Everton in the last sixteen of the
UEFA Cup and currently sit a lofty fourth in Serie A.
CESAR PRANDELLI
Cesare Prandelli was the manager
at AS Roma before personal issues forced his resignation. He re-emerged at Fiorentina and has been
quietly building a team in Florence. He turned La Viola from relegation strugglers
into a fourth place team, scandal hit and they were striped of the Champions
League place and 15 points. Despite the
docked points Prandelli managed a very creditable fifth in the 06/07 season and
a UEFA Cup spot. 2007/08 has seen his
side well up the table and doing well in the UEFA Cup. He is a fashionista and has had to deal with
the death of his wife this season.
WHAT HAS FIORENTINA DONE THIS SEASON?
This Viola side has a lot more in
common with Everton than does a Svennaisannced
Manchester City,
perhaps.
Fiorentina has managed the last
sixteen of the UEFA Cup with wins the following.
Groningen on penalties in the first round.
In the group stages they faced Villarreal
(A), Effsborg (H), AEK Athens (A) and Mlada Boleslav (H) and came away with two
wins and two draws; they scored ten and let in four.
They comfortably beat Rosenborg
home and away.
In Serie A
They’ve played well, sometimes
poorly and sometimes spectacularly.
Similar to Everton they haven’t beaten the top sides (Milan, Inter and Juventus) this season but
have managed a few good draws. They
travel well and Mutu is in the race for the capponcanoniere award.
They aren’t exactly a hard or
tough team (at least they don’t get many cards) and they like to attack. Criticism of them talks about a ‘glass jaw’
and not knowing how to defend for long periods.
WHO ARE THEY AND WHAT CAN THEY DO?
Frey (FRA) – excellent
‘keeper. Will be the first choice for
the national side in a year or two.
Dainelli (ITA) – Mainstay of La
Viola’s defence, good solid centre back.
Ujfalusi (CZH) – right back
(plays in the centre for the Czech
Republic). Better going forward than defending, particularly
when pace is involved.
Gamberini (ITA) – solid centre
back and probably see action in Euro08.
Kroldrup (DEN) – big good and
works well with Gamberini – he’ll be making a return to his previous club and
no love will have been lost at all.
Potenza (ITA) – promising youngster with
limited opportunities at Fiorentina, definitely one for the future.
Pasqual (ITA) a left back, who
can play further forward, gives Fiorentina a good crosser and willing runner
who likes to take free kicks and corners.
Da Costa (POR) – a youth prospect
– unlikely to figure
Donadel (ITA) – creative
midfielder for Prandelli, can spread the ball about from deep or from the
flanks.
Semioli (ITA) – mostly wide right
in either the middle or in a three man attack, great crosser of the ball.
Liverani (ITA) – can play wide
left or in the middle, very creative with a good range of passing and a nice
turn of speed.
Montolivo (ITA) – creative
youngster, most used from the bench.
Gobbi (ITA) – utility player,
really a midfielder and much more comfortable in that position.
Kuzmanovic (SUI)– young midfield
starlet. Pace and plenty of energy, good
box to box and doesn’t really have a pair of scoring boots.
Jorgenson (DEN)– Utility and then
some, will fit in to any position and do a decent job.
Santana (ARG) – right sided
midfielder with attacking intentions, good pace, movement and trickery with a
good cross.
Mutu (ROM ) – Fiorentina’s main
goal threat and a potent weapon. Scores
from anywhere and comes off the flanks well.
A good lone striker or when paired with others. Cappocanoiere potential with 14 Serie A goals
on the season
Vieri (ITA) – wily veteran who
may have lost some pace, he still has a bagful of tricks and is a good target
man with an excellent positional sense.
Pazzini (ITA) – a great foil for
Mutu and having a wonderful season so far.
Pacy and athletic he can play wide or through the middle.
Papa Wiago (SEN) – new signing
and primarily a wide player, will fit into Fiorentina’s 4 3 3 quite well.
Cacia (ITA) – young forward who
can come of the bench and do a decent job.
Osvaldo (ARG) – new to Fiorentina
but already an impact player, pacy goal hanger.
WHAT FORMATION AND WHAT PLAYERS?
Typically Prandelli will go with
a 4 3 3 (although not the same sort of 4 3 3 that Grant uses at Chelsea).
If he has all his players
available then this is what I would suggest could be his starting eleven.
GK – Frey
RB – Ujfalusi
CB – Dainelli
CB – Gamberini
LB – Pasqual
RM – Semioli
CM – Kuzmanovic
LM – Donadel
CF – Semioli
CF - Mutu
CF - Pazzini
Bench –
Kroldrup
Montolivo
Liverani
Jorgenson
Vieri
Santana
FIORENTINA’S NEXT OPPONENTS
Fiorentina play strugglers
Livorno On Wednesday and then a tough trip to Turin to play the Bianconeri. Then they welcome the Blues.
Inter won in Serie A and lost in Europe, Milan drew twice last week, Fiorentina won
twice and Juventus won then had the middle of the week off.
Wins for Sampdoria, Lazio, Empoli, Palermo
and Udinese set smiles off in Genoa, Rome, Empoli, Palermo and Udine.
Losses for Genoa, Catania, Roma, Napoli, Atalanta, Cagliari
and Reggina means tears in Genoa, Catania, Rome, Naples, Bergamo, Cagliari and
Reggio Calabria.
Draws for Parma, Siena, Torino mean scratched heads in Parma,
Siena and Turin.
Shock of the week, Empoli handing it to Napoli in Naples.
Non shock of the week, Inter wins, again.
FIXTURES
Reggina V Juventus
A week without the hullabaloo of Europe
will be good for the Bianconeri, time to relax and plan for a second place
challenge. Reggina have had some soul
searching to do on the back of four losses, it looks bleak for the Amaranto.
Reggina were hammered by four in their last meeting.
The firepower at home is weak (if not AWOL) and Juventus
have an awful lot of talent.
Milan V Palermo
A tough trip to London
and a laundry list of injuries will be tough for the Rossoneri to overcome and
bring their all to the Stadio Meazza against tough but fragile opposition. Palermo may
have turned a corner but will be wary of the Milan side at home and be in a cautiously buoyant
mood.
Palermo
beat Milan Palermo earlier this season.
Inconsistent form is the bane of both clubs with a lot to
play for this could be a cracker or a tight and tense draw. Managers and players will decide the outcome;
fresher legs may play a part. Europe beckons.
Torino V Parma
Neither side scored in the last round of Serie A. The Toros are in more ebullient form than the
Gialloblu although neither side is yet free of relegation worries.
Parma beat Torino in Parma.
The forwards aren’t firing particularly well for either club
but expect the home side to be less cautious.
Has all the makings of a defensive draw so it’ll probably be hugely one
sided or something.
Atalanta V Sienna
Comfortably mid table versus uncomfortably close to the
bottom three. Sienna comes into the game
with one loss in their last three while Atalanta has one win in five.
The Zebrette and Nerrazzurri drew in Siena.
Siena
play well but struggle to finish and Atalanta are much too inconsistent
recently. Best possible game would ensue
if Sienna scored first and early.
Cagliari
V Lazio
Finally the Romans won whilst the Sardinian side looks
mournfully upwards at the other nineteen Serie A sides. Things aren’t all that bright in Rome though with poor
form amidst the ruins of high expectations.
The Rossoblu got well beaten by the Biancocelesti in Rome.
Neither side has it easy finding the net although Lazio do
better away than do Cagliari
at home. This could go either way but a
lot will depend on how much fight the Sardinians actually have; there are still
fourty five points to win.
Empoli V Catania
Wow and unexpected stuffing of the Azzurri leave the Azzurri
in grand fettle. Catania’s loss last week has them only a
point above Empoli but they generally play better football. This still has the makings of a relegation
six pointer.
Last time out the Elefanti beat Empoli.
Form is with Empoli on the back of two wins as opposed to
four losses. Neither side scores many
with Pozzi being the standout forward; an injury means though that neither side
really has any edge in that department.
Home form will probably tell but the points will be hard fought
for.
Livorno V Napoli
The loss to Inter is part of an Amaranto spiral downwards,
they want a few wins though to haul into themselves back into the mid table
melee. Two losses for the Azzurri is
uncreditable, given their weapons and defensive minded coach.
The home side lost in a tight one earlier this season.
Formation and personnel is crucial for Napoli,
stars are out and a choice between 352 and 443 is tough. Livorno will
look to take on a weakened team with verve and vim at home, the wrong result
will see them in the bottom three come Sunday night.
Roma V Fiorentina
Winning in Europe is
good. The legs don’t feel so tired and
the heart and mind are full of fire and confidence. The Giallorossi still have a task in the
second leg and La Viola contemplates the Blues.
Both sides have three domestic wins in the last five with Fiorentina
edging a point closer to Roma on the back of one loss less.
Florence
saw a combustible score draw last time the two sides met.
Roma have Juventus breathing fire from below and the smell
of old age liniment is wafting up from Milan. European football next year is a must, the
name of the Cup is more vital than life itself; if you were to believe the
media.
Should be a cracking game with two sides that have plenty of
weapons, decent stoppers and solid back lines.
Mutu has more goals than Totti, take away the penalties and it’s only
one more though, expect big things from both players.
Sampdoria V Inter
Licking his hand and combing it through his coiffure as
opposed to licking his wounds and criticizing referees. A Sampdoria starlet and a Scudetto winning
manager. Europe
and Anfield was a blow, the derby d’lanterna was also a blow but the goal and
the madman were magical.
Inter still seem to be unstoppable in the league and
vulnerable in Europe whilst a Cassano inspired
Sampdoria keep climbing the table.
The Blucerchiati were soundly thrashed in a one sided
Nerrazzurri mauling in Milan.
The midfield is getting out of it’s mess and now the defence
has just slipped into one, an abundance of strikers and goals is the key for
Inter. Cassano grows into the
inspiration for Sampdoria whilst Belluci keeps ban ging in the goals. Expect some fireworks, some histrionics and
possibly a cracking game and an Inter loss.
Of course Mancini might have kicked his players and himself so hard on
the flight back from England that Inter’ll be superkeen to stomp all over
Cassano and co.
Udinese V Genoa
The uns exy side in Serie A have started getting back to
winning ways now that the spotlight is turned elsewhere. The Grifani continue to stay in the middle of
the pack with some up and down play and results. The side from Udine boasts the only cappocannoniere in
waiting who does it without the spot.
Genoa
star Borriello bagged a hat trick earlier in the season.
Udinese have some potent weapons and a mean defence, Genoa’s are less potent
and mean though not without merit. The
home side would be favoured although Derby
results can be misleading. Could be
anyone’s a Genoa
goal early would be a nice start.
My Games of the Week.
Sampdoria V Inter is trumped (just) by Roma V Fiorentina
(keep your eye on a bounceback thrashing from Napoli)
What’s On FSC?
Reggina V Juventus (Sat)
Roma V Fiorentina (Sun)
Milan V Palermo (Sun)

Atalanta came from behind twice to grab a hard earned point in Bergamo. Two goals from Muslimovic repaid the manager’s
faith in the striker. Fiorentina without
Mutu played well but couldn’t get a third to kill the game off.
The Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia
had a good crowd for this tough and vital clash of black and blue and
purple. The Orbici are tough at home and
la Viola is hard to score against away.
Neither side has its best player on the field so understudies would have
to step up and deliver.
Gigi Del Neri, gauche and
bespectacled, adopted a normal 4 4 2; strong defence, good width and a gamble
on a less than prolific striker were his choices.
Coppola keeps goal with a back
four of Rivalta, Pellegrino, Capelli and Manfredini. Ferreira Pinto and Langella provided width
with De Ascentis and Tissone providing the steel through the middle. Floccari keeps his place and Muslimovic gets
a rare start.
Prandelli stayed with his usual 4
3 3. Solid at the back with a good ‘keeper,
young talent in the midfield with a potent (not his best with Mutu absent) attacking
combination. Frey keeps goal with a back
four of Ujfalusi (who is likely to leave on a free in June, Dianelli, Gamberini
(freshly bolstered by his Azzurri call up) and Pasqual. Donadel and Montolivo; they can tackle
although the range of their passing is the key to la Viola’s potent attack;
work alongside the deeper lying Kuzmanovic in the middle. Santana and Semioli operate wider and just
behind the free scoring Pazzini.
The first two chances in an open
game involve fullbacks. Manfredini gets
forward and when things open up he gets ambitious with a volley from the left,
Ujfalusi gets forward on the right and sends in a good cross only for Pazzini
to head wide.
Both teams operate from a strong
defensive position, Atalanta rely on the width getting balls into the energetic
strikers, who are all troublesome runs and flicks. Fiorentina rely on the passing of Donadel and
Montolivo from the centre out to the flanks and balls into the channels, the
three pronged attack can pull the back four around a lot as well opening up
dangerous spaces.
Neither team is about sitting
back though, the ball is always moved forward, Atalanta is more direct than the
visitors.
De Ascentis has to concentrate
more on his tackling than his passing as Donadel is seeing a lot of the ball
early on, his passing is allowing Fiorentina to dictate the play and apply
pressure to the home side.
Neither side can build up enough
steam to create much in front of goal.
Things are ebbing and flowing
nicely when a flurry of plays unfold. Muslimovic
gets onto a Floccari flick and shoots wide, Manfredini gets a card and knock on
the head from a Viola elbow, Santana gets to the byline and whips a good cross
in; more dangerous than the crosses that have been coming from deeper. Manfredini is replaced by Belleri, certainly
feeling the after effects of an elbow to the temple. The goal comes in short order with Donadel
the creator, his ball picks out the run of Santana and the ball in finds
Pazzini, the ex-Atalanta player takes a touch then spins and forces it past
Coppola.
MUTED GOAL CELEBRATION FROM THE FORMER ATALANTA MAN
The Stadio momentarily fills with
a horrible silencio.
Within a minute the scores are
level. Fiorentina don’t clear a corner
and the ball back in from Belleri finds the unmarked Muslimovic who thunders
the ball into the net. Faith in his him
by Del Neri is repaid.
The flurry subsides and both
sides resume a tactical battle of cut and thrust, quick balls over the top and
last ditch challenges. A couple of half
chances go begging and Atalanta is gaining the upper hand with control of the
midfield.
Both sides come out as they went
in.
The attacking desire continues
from the first whistle, half chances being created at either end as the temp is
raised and the ball flies from end to end.
The first moments of the second
half belong to Atalanta, Langella and Pinto are full of running on the flanks
and the simple passing of De Ascentis are allowing the Orbici to build up a
head of steam.
Donadel is focusing more on
defence and Montolivo takes up the attacking duties, his astute and accurate
passing hauls the balance back in to the game and slowly tips it towards la
Viola.
Santana makes the most of the
ascendancy with a good ball down the right channel, Pazzini latches onto it and
lays the ball out wide, without breaking stride Kuzmanovic crosses well and
Semioli is on hand in the six yard box to head home.
SEMIOLO CELEBRATES WITH HIS TEAMMATES
Atalanta is nothing if not
obdurate and a combination of tough tackling and hard running start to push
Fiorentina back. Langella and Kuzmanovic
get involved in an off the ball incident, the veteran Atalanta players almost
immediately makes way for Inzaghi; he’s lucky to be able to be subbed as the
incident with Kuzmanovic didn’t seem to be picked up by the officials. Kuzmanovic is replaced by the excellent
simplicity and versatility of Jorgenson before the youngster’s temper finds an
outlet.
A Muslimovic card for dissent
seems to spark a feistier aspect to the already high adrenaline game, the tempo
is increased as the home side tries all they can to get an equalizing
goal. Fiorentina are manfully handling
the pressure without being pushed too deep, they also carry the threat of the
counter attack.
The quality of Doni is missed,
Inzaghi has the ball taken away from him by Gamberini before he can pull the
trigger and Belleri crosses poorly after skinning Ujfalusi on the byline.
Fiorentina are professional, hard
working as they try to slow the game down and earn all three points. Vieri comes on for his ball holding ability
and new Atlanta signing Paolucci is introduced to add some pace to the attack,
with the change Del Neri’s side move to a more attacking 4 3 3.
The final few minutes provide a
fitting end to a highly entertaining and well fought contest. Vieri looks to run out time and heads to the
byline, when the space opens up he whips in a great cross which sees Coppola
leave his area to clear the ball, with the ‘keeper well out of position
Fiorentina cross tamely, Atalanta break with pace and gusto through Tissone, he
finds Inzaghi who draws in the defence then lays the ball wide, the cross in is
perfect for Muslimovic to slip behind his marker and stab home from six yards
out. The Stadio Atleti erupts
thunderously and Del Neri is ecstatic.
TWO GOAL MAN OF THE MATCH IN RELAXED MOOD DURING TRAINING
Del Neri will be concerned at the
goals but well pleased with his sides attacking and hard work, faith in
Muslimovic has been repaid with two poacher’s goals and a point from a game
with a top four side is a decent result.
Del Neri is morphing Atalanta into a side that can challenge for a UEFA
Cup place.
Prandelli will rue his side’s
inability to keep a lead. For most of
the last twenty five minutes they handled Atalanta well and professionally,
Vieri’s cross almost led to a goal but had he just settled for the corner flag
the three points would have been the visitors’.
His youthful side has a tough stretch in the next month or so which will
make or break their season, maintaining a UEFA Cup challenge and staying in the
top four are not too dissimilar to the challenges faced by Fiorentina’s likely
opponents if they make it through to the last 16 of the UEFA Cup.
The commentator put it
brilliantly – “Do they have the bottle to stay in fourth spot? Today they have been shown to have a bit of a
glass jaw.”
The referee was OK. Some of the calls that Atalanta didn’t get
seemed harsh but his bookings were all justified and he didn’t see Langella and
Kuzmanovic get shirty. The trend in
Italian officiating seems to be to let play go on.
Inter####onale are in top spot. Consistently winning; even whilst playing
poorly; is a feature of most of their campaign to date. The title is theirs to lose. The restart of European competition will have
a big impact on the UEFA Cup and Champions League places. Juventus, Udinese and Palermo don’t have any European football to
look forward to or provide a distraction.
Inter, Milan
and Roma have the Champions League and Fiorentina have the UEFA Cup as a
distraction.

FIXTURES
Fiorentina V Torino
A midweek cup trouncing might not get any better in Florence. La Viola is strong and coming of####ood win and
with Europe coming up and the European spots
up for grabs they have plenty to play for.
The manager also seems to be right back in the game. The Gigliati are at full strength and Granata
are struggling with injuries. Last week
Fiorentina won and Torino lost.
The Nerrazzurri scraped a win last week but expect a
different side at the Stadio Meazza.
Maniche is unlikely to get an outing as will Parma’s new signing Lucarelli. Expect a home win but don’t be surprised if
Lucarelli returns to Serie A with a ####.
Parma hasn’t
won away from home yet and a loss won’t help their slide into the relegation
quagmire. Both sides are at less than
full strength but Mancini’s charges have plenty of depth. Last week Inter won and Parma lost.
Genoa V Atalanta
Great result for Genoa
last week and they’ll need to play just as well to leapfrog Atalanta in the
race for a UEFA Cup place. Expect a home
win but this could be a cracking game. Genoa loses their top
Honduran and Doni is back for Atalanta.
Last week Genoa
won and Atalanta lost.
Juventus V Sampdoria
A draw for the Bianconeri; a lucky one at that; will need to
be erased by a home win. Juventus can’t
lose their position but they will not want to slip any further behind Roma or allow
Udinese and Fiorentina to catch up. Sampdoria
were on fire last week and will relish this tough away challenge despite having
a less than stellar form on the road.
Sampdoria don’t have a full compliment of strikers and Juventus are a
touch short in defence. Tiago may
start. Last week Juventus drew and
Sampdoria won.
Livorno V Empoli
Already a relegation six pointer and a local derby will make
this fixture shine (although last season it remained goalless). Livorno is
unbeaten in five and playing well under a new manager and Empoli are
struggling, with their last win coming in 2007.
Empoli are at less than full strength and poor on the road. Last week Livorno
won and Empoli drew.
Napoli V Lazio
Napoli needs to regain
their early season form if they are to mount a challenge on a European
place. The strikers and goalkeepers are
kept busy in Naples
so expect a few goals; from either team.
Lazio continue their poor form.
Gargano will be a loss to Napoli but
Lazio has plenty of injury worries. Last
week both teams lost.
Palermo V Siena
Palermo
come off an erratic run of form but are still riding high in Serie A, another
loss will dent their UEFA Cup ambitions and could see them drop places. Siena
are in deep trouble and really struggle on the road; one win in eight. This must be the start of the Bianconeri’s
relegation dogfight, particularly as they showed so well against Inter last
week. Expect goals with both teams
wanting the win. Last week Palermo and Siena
lost.
Reggina V Cagliari
Reggina are struggling but Cagliari is awful. A huge game for both teams. Another loss and Cagliari will be playing for pride, a Reggina
loss helps them not a jot. Amaruso will
be the difference maker and will want to shine so as to stake a place in another
Serie A side next season. History is
with the home side and the visitors have their share of injury woes. Last week Reggina grabbed a point and Cagliari lost;
again.
Roma V Catania
Second place needs defended and the visit of Catania is an almost certain three points, last season Catania got thrashed
7-0. Catania hasn’t won on the road this season
and nothing is likely to change here, Mancini is in a good run of form and
Spinesi is wearing his shooting boots.
The result against Juventus will give the Sicilians heart for this
fixture. Last week Roma won and Catania were robbed of
three points.
Udinese V Milan
Possibly the biggest game of the weekend. Milan is
certainly going to be tested by a very strong Udinese side that has only lost
once in Udine. Milan’s
away form is better than their play in the Stadio Meazza though. Pirlo’s absence will be a tough blow to
overcome; Gattuso is fiery but doesn’t have the ball skills that Pirlo
has. The three Brazilians will face a
tougher test against a tough Udinese back line than they did against Napoli. The Azzuri
have some injury and suspension problems but Quagliarella is in form, history
favours the Rossoneri. Last week both
these teams won and will be looking to continue the trend to solidify their
European aspirations for the home side and to climb the table for the
visitors.
A.C. Milan
has left the country but the Serie a fixture is packed with tasty games this
weekend.
Italian football's best player gets his hands on a golden ball.
Internaz ionale are still the form team, closely followed by
A.S. Roma, the top two have opened a gap on the other teams; albeit a small
one. With three games two go before the
Winter break the chasers will want to close the gap before it becomes a chasm.
Empoli (20th)
v Cagliari (18th)
A real relegation six pointer so early in the season. Empoli have been poor; home and away this
season; with the exception of a win over A. C. Milan at the San Siro.
Two weak defences and the worst Italian top flight attack
might suggest plenty of goals; I’d beg to differ; last season this fixture was
1-0 and Cagliari don’t travel to the Stadio Castellini very well.
Injuries to the Cagliari
‘keeper will be the focal point of Empoli’s attack; Foggia may be back to his best for this
game. A dourish and close home win.
Genoa (13th) v Siena (17th)
A win for Siena
would take them away from the crowd at the bottom of the table. With only a
victory against Empoli this season they are struggling for points, a full squad
to pick from will help but a less than stellar away record doesn’t favour the
Bianconeri.
Genoa are a mixed bag this
season, good wins against Udinese and Napoli
have been balanced with a thrashing by Internaz ionale. The home side scores freely at home but also
have defensive problems, having Bega out on a suspension won’t help.
Home advantage should mean a Genoa victory. Don’t hold your breath for a cracker unless Genoa regains their early
season form.
Internaz ionale (1st)
v Torino (12th)
The Nerazzurri welcome Torino
with open arms, despite their injury worries.
The Turin
team is winless on the road and Internaz ionale are dominant at home.
Six goals for the home side in the two fixtures last season
and a relatively bounteous selection of forwards to choose from would suggest a
home romp. The Turin
team are likely to favour a 4 4 2 and have done well against Milan and Juventus this season, the need to
win this; in the first of three tough games; is immense. Ventola may have a point to prove and the
midfield will be strengthened with the return of Grella and Barone (has anyone
seen DangerMouse?). Expect a home win.
Juventus (3rd)
v Atalanta (6th)
Atalanta are calmly going about making a Bergamo size dent
in Serie A this season, they have done it without the attention of a Napoli or
Palermo. The comfortable win last week
was a wake up call to many in the league. The Orobici will be feeling good with a solid
if unspectacular away record. Doni is
better at home than away but adds a touch of class to a more workmanlike team.
Juventus are getting better as the season wears on, the lack
of European football is a huge help and the players that took them easily to
the top of Serie B are doing the same in Serie A. Goal scoring isn’t the Bianconeri’s issue at
home but their defence can be a touch shaky at times.
Doni will have to be on fire and the Juventus backline have
a clanger for an away win in the Stadio Olimpico. Home win.
Lazio (15th)
v Catania (10th)
Lazio are having a poor season, struggling in Italy and in Europe
they have all but imploded this season. Rossi
is under pressure and a loss here might be his last hurrah for the
Biancocelesti. They have a host of
injuries and are leaking goals at home.
Catania
will be buoyant after a stonking win against their Sicilian neighbours last
week. Martinez and Tedesco will be absent due to suspension
but they have plenty of quality in the side.
The Rossoazzurri front man Spinesi will be a threat but goals from
elsewhere may be harder to come by.
Not winning away this season may change this weekend, Lazio
will be shell shocked and tired from the Inter drubbing in midweek. Pride and safety can make excellent
motivators though. I’d go for an entertaining
draw.
Livorno (16th) v Roma (2nd)
Livorno is hovering above
the trouble zone this week but welcome an in form Roma to the Armando
Picchi. The Tuscan’s have been
marginally better away this season but took two points off Internaz ionale at
home. If Tavano has a good game they can
expect some goals from a sometimes error prone Roma defence.
The Giallorossi need to put away teams such as Livorno to keep Internaz ionale in their sights. Totti’s likely return will be a boost to
Spalletti, although it remains to be seen whether the Italian and Montenegrin
can operate in tandem; as they are likely to do at the weekend.
Unless Roma have a howler and Livorno; Amelia in particular;
have a blinder then an away win is on the cards, Roma are a stronger team than
last year when they came away from Tuscany
with a draw.
Napoli (9th)
v Parma (14th)
Tough game for Napoli after
last week’s defeat. They are much better
home than away so should be optimistic.
Reja is likely to field an unchanged side; one alteration due to
suspension aside; such is his confidence in his players. They have plenty of goals in them but the
Azzurri can be dodgy at the back.
Parma
has a chance to match them on points with a win. A recent run of good form has coincided with
a return to a 4 4 2, the Gialloblu will rely on Manchester misfit Corradi and Pisanu for
goals but have struggled late in games at times this season.
A tough one to call but I’ll go for the Azzurri on this one,
home form and their foreign strike force will give them all three points.
Palermo (11th) v Fiorentina (5th)
La Viola need a win to change their momentum and hasn’t lost
on their travels this season. Prandelli’s
loss will be professionally put aside in what is almost a must win game. Goals have been the recent problem, Mutu
hasn’t been on target since the Siena
win although Pazzini and Vieri have both found the net recently. Three games without a win isn’t Champions
League spot football.
Palermo had a tough loss last week and much will depend on
whether they go 4 5 1 or 4 4 2, they have been much better looking and more
dangerous in the latter formation, Amauri benefits from a little attacking
help. Last week they squandered a number
of half chances and will need to be better in front of goal this week. Caserta’s
suspension is a blow but the reintroduction of Miccoli and Cavani should help
things out up front.
The home crowd maybe a twelfth man but Fiorentina are a
strong side. I think you may see some
fireworks in the Renzo Barbera, most of them actually on the pitch. High scoring draw.
Udinese (4th)
v Sampdoria (7th)
The team from Udine
will want to bounce back after a loss to Roma.
Lack of a strong midfield will be the key for Udinese, if they can
manage without one they will win. Tough
to beat and obdurate they are good at home and their loss to Internaz ionale
was their first in nine games.
Sampdoria are a topsy turvy team, they can set a stadium
alight or bore the crowds with some turgid football; rarely do they attain a
middle ground. Cassano can set them on
fire but his ego is still a major problem.
A fit Bellucci will cause the Zebrette problems but their poor away
record in defence may be exploited.
Tense encounter given the importance of the game but Udinese
will sneak the points.
My games of the week this weekend are Juventus v Atalanta
and Palermo v
Fiorentina. Both sets of teams are close
in terms of their current standings and a good or bad result this weekend can
be a tough one to bounce back from or huge boost just before Christmas.
If you have FSC, the games from Turin,
Sicily and Milan will be broadcast. I’ll hope to do both my games of the week in
a summary.
Week 14 in Serie A is an important one
Four of the top five play each other and Juventus have a tough trip to
AC Milan, then you have two up and comers battling it out in the Derby of
Sicily.
AC Milan 0-0 Juventus
Not a bore draw. Some of the play was high octane, quality
football, just no end product. Juventus
had energy pace and no end product and Milan
seemed bewildered at times but fought themselves back into the game. Nedved and Kaka were the shining lights on
the park with some fine forward play; the Czech player is prone to the theatric
dive though although Kaka came close to emulating the veteran midfielder with a
comic flop over Chiellini. . Both Dida; not least from Salihamidzic; and
Buffon; from a variety of Milan
players; made some good saves.
TREZEGUET LETS FLY BUT THE POST COMES TO MILAN'S RESCUE
Ancelotti will rue another week
at the San Siro sans three points and Ranieri will have seen plenty to be happy
about in the Bianconeri play.
Neither side had that extra burst
of pace of deft touch or slice of luck to prise open their opponents and the
draw is a better result for others in the top half of the table.
Wow! It’s not just the Dutch that know how to play
total football. The version being played
by Mancini’s team at the moment is something beautiful to behold. They have power, pace, skill, finishing and
bags of work ethic. Front to back the
whole squad is oozing confidence.
Fiorentina are finding that
staying in the top echelons of Serie A is tough to do. La Viola started well, the interchange, verve
and skill of their front six allowed them to get plenty of penetration deep
into the Inter half. Mutu looked to be
in fine fettle without really troubling Cesar.
Inter’s first real attack bore
fruit though; a defence splitting pass from Ibrahimovic found the young
Chilean; Jiminez; free and clear and well bale to slot the ball past the
excellent Frenchman, Frey.
Fiorentina never recovered
despite a series of half chances which were never taken. The visitors played confident, assured
football all over the park. The front
line was always a threat and the defence rarely let Cesar work. Cambiaso was particularly excellent with a
stunningly energetic performance, box to box he was impeccable, apart from the
yellow.
The Swedish sensation may not be
finding the net in the league but his passing and vision created two today,
just before the half his sublime flick into the path of a well timed Cruz run
allows the Argentinean to continue his rich goal scoring vein with a cool
finish past Frey.
Ibrahimovic almost scored himself
late on but two fantastic saves from Frey frustrated the Swede.
Two changes at half time didn’t
do much for Fiorentina’s game. They
huffed and puffed but couldn’t blow down the house that Mancini has built.
BECAUSE IT'S ONLY EVER A GAME
THE ECITING YOUNG CHILEAN OPENS THE SCORING
The ex Sampdoria man will be more
than delighted with three points from a Scuddetto hopeful away from home.
Prandelli will have seen much to
be happy about but no goals at home must be a worry.
Elvis isn’t dead, he’s living in Italy
and supporting Fiorentina.
The Derby of Sicily was incident
packed and a fine advertisement for football beyond the hallowed turf of the
top clubs. The Stadio Angelo Massimino
had yet to see a home Serie A victory in this fixture. With a new manager at Palermo
and Catania
playing well things looked promising.
Both teams went at each other
from the whistle. The first ball was
usually forward and both keepers had to come out of the area to clear through
balls, Polito with his chest and Fontana
with his head.
The Elefanti had the better of
the early going with Martinez
and Vargas providing some splendid effort and excellence on the flanks.
Catania got a lucky break when
Spinesi hauled the ball back into play and out to Vargas, the Peruvian’s cross
met by Mascara ahead of the less than stellar Biava for the goal. Replays, Fontana
and the Palermo
defence suggested the ball had gone out but Terfoloni wouldn’t have any of
it.
Later on in a half that was
mostly Catania’s Biava clearance spooned up from the edge of the penalty area
and dropped invitingly for Spinesi, Barzagli gave the forward a push at the
vital moment but a smart referee and assistant spotted the infringement and
Spinesi duly tucked one past Fontana.
Amauri was too isolated to do
much damage in the first half. He got
company in the second and looked more dangerous, Caserta providing the assistance. For the second week in a row Palermo started
with one up front and for the second week in a row looked much, much more
dangerous when a second striker joined in, this also helped Brienza get into
the attack more.
Simplicio takes a quick free kick
to Tedesco; unfortunate not to be facing his injured brother; Simplicio plays
the return ball forward to Brienza whose deft pass finds Amauri, the
Brazilian’s flick is into the path of Caserta who outmaneuvers the defender
with a feint right foot shot, he leaves his man behind and buries one with a
delicious left foot drive.
The jubilation of the away team;
their fans are banned from the stadium; is short lived as a studs up challenge
by the Palermo goal hero is greeted by a red and the derision of the Catania
fans.
Palermo
struggle to get back into the match but gamely plug away, Fontana
is the busier of the two ‘keepers in the last twenty minutes and comes up with
some stunning saves but can’t do a thing when Martinez fires one past him. The Uruguayan caps a blinding game with a
stunning curler beyond Fontana
and inside the far post from some hard work by Vargas. Fitting that the two best Catania
players are involved in the third and best Catania goal.
Baldini will have seen much to be
pleased about, good attacking and solid defending along with some standout
perfomances from key players.
Unfortunately more good play from the likes of Vargas, Martinez and Stovini are likely to perk the
interest of some bigger clubs.
Guidolin; without the firepower
of Miccoli and Cavani suffered his first defeat in this fixture, not a good
start to his fourth stint at the Rosanero.
Roma 2-1 Udinese (Juan 10, Taddei
27 – Quagliarella 11)
Roma kept the pressure on
Internaz ionale with this well crafted victory with the team in joint second
place.
Both teams started well. Roma looking to work the midfield with slick,
one touch passing and Udinese looking to Di Natale to create.
Roma’s tactics paid early
dividends, Juan cam up from the back to poke a close range effort home for the
opener. Udinese responded immediately,
Quagliarella turning on a ball from deep and rifling one past Doni. Mexes was at fault for giving the forward too
much space, the Frenchman had an up and down game, some excellent defending
interspersed with some dodgy mistakes.
Zapata was the standout defender
for Udinese but could do nothing to stop Taddei taking advantage of a sloppy
Lukovic clearance.
Udinese kept looking to Di Natale
for a spark and despite some sublime ball skills from the Italy International
they visitors couldn’t find the net.
The Giallorossi dominated in the
second half, winning the midfield battle with ease. Udinese only came into the game in the last
quarter hour when a harsh series of red cards saw the Bianconeri reduced to
nine men. Saccani brandished the
straight red for substitute Pinzi for a clumsy challenge then Dossena got the
same for being overly mouthy. Roma
seemed to struggle to come to terms with their two man advantage, Floro Flores
brought the best from Doni late on.
TADDEI CONCENTRATES AS HE CROWNS HIS RETURN WITH A WINNER
Marino is doing well to take the
unfashionable Udinese to the dizzy heights of Serie A, a loss to Roma in Rome is no shame as the
contest was pretty close, at least in the first half.
Spalletti will be pleased with
the win but not with the shambolic last fifteen minutes in which the nine men
of the visitors troubled his team.
