Daytona 500, What's Not to Like?
Feb 18, 2008 | 9:08PM | report this

Ahh, Daytona Beach. The suds, the strippers, the scent of coconut oil, the scenery in bikiniri. What's not to like? Glad you asked. I, Countryjag the pessimist for the restofus, is here to let you know what's not to like.

Fox TV......I'll give them credit for trying something new------gopher cam----but every time it looked just the same. No action, just cars going by. Hell, it wasn't even a new idea. We've seen it before at Iowa Speedway for one. Rusty's claiming that idea. I have to admit DW was almost tolerable for a change. Of course me giving up my New Year's Resolution on race day may have helped. A lot of people were complaing about too many commercials. I can remember when the races weren't live on TV. Radio only. So I can't #### about advertising.

Pre-race show......Will NASCAR ever learn? Chubby Freakin' Checker? NASCAR do not even have a live music show if you have to go that cheap. How much did Chubby set you back? $2,500, and two rooms at a Red Roof Inn?

NASCAR's yellow line rule........The  only time Jr's ever been penalized for it was on the final restart, and he didn't do it (this time). When you get blocked below the yellow line, as #18 clearly was, you shouldn't be penalized. Montoya showed what to do when someone tries to block you below the line. All drivers should start running into the #### of the blocker until NASCAR takes action. All drivers should also be forced to watch the last lap of the '79 Daytona 500, over and over, to see how Cale and Donnie took care of blocking and passing under the line.

After race blogs......Did every driver's fan club president post yet? Good. I was waiting for all the drive bys to finish ranting. We get it people, your driver got screwed by....(a) his own teammate, (b) NASCAR, (c) some no driving foreign SOB, (d) all of the above. In the future, to save our lips from moving so much, just pick a letter.

Seriously, it was a pretty good race. Beat the hell out of watching the NBA All-Star game I'll bet.

Lori....thanks for the chime. That is one of the all time great movie cowboys, and all around bad ####, Sam Elliott. The pic is from the movie "The Big Liebowski". Buy, dont rent it. You have to watch it a couple of times to catch everything.

I was a bit remiss about the pre race show with all the entertainers lip syncing all the while NASCAR had the old classics running around the track with very little coverage of that. I thought I was watching a half time football show.

Chubby lipsynced..LOL. The old cars were good..But the halftime show was a drag...And posted start time was an hour and a half before it started...

pop...thanks for chiming in. Yes, with that much pre-race time to fill FOX could have come up with some interesting features. They've only had since last July to work on the Super Boxl of NASCAR's pre-race show.

Lori...he's the man. He does voice over on one commercial, and when he says, "Beef, it's what for dinner", I don't know about you, but I'm going to go out for some steaks.

Its to bad about all the commercials during the broadcast of the Daytona 500. For a three hour race, viewers saw at most a hour and half. Please stop having so many commercials. How many times do you guys have to tell us where your broadcasting from, run commercials while showing the race, show pavement of cars running over it, twenty thousand in car camera shots, and showing the rearends of other cars? My opinon, A really bad televised Daytona 500? Fox and Nascar smarten up with the televised races before the T.V. ratings go down even lower, or I might just start listening to the races on radio. Have a nice day Fox and Nascar.
Thanks,
L.R.

CJ - I kinda liked the Gopher cam...thought it gave great perspective on the banking, esp from the viewpoint of fans who have never attended a race.

Pre-race was long but I could listen to Chris Meyers forever...that music show was horrific though.

I dont get why folks complain about the commericals. I thought FOX did pretty well sneaking them in during all those cautions. We missed some of the action but ITS ON TV!! If you want to see the whole race you have to go to the track!!

I agree about that yellow line issue, it was a bummer for both Kyle and Jr.

Blogs blogs blogs...at least there is alot folks excited enough to write about it!

Still waiting on that chick-fil-a my friend! LOL

LR....don't look for FOX to make any costly changes any time soon. Evidently they're not interested in the 90%+ of viewers who aren't watching. You could watch a tape of one of their first broadcasts in 2001, and it wouldn't be much different than today's. Of course so would the NFL.

klv....I like the gopher cam better at Iowa Speedway. It's actually in the middle of the racing groove. Cars go right over it.

If I send Chick-fil-a to the media center at Infineon, would you get it?

I wonder if the networks just cant install the cameras in the actual tracks per NASCAR or the track itself...plus its bound to be pretty expensive to have to leave them there, I bet they rip them out to reuse. Cars going right over it would be very cool!

On the chick-fil-a...probably not! ;) Let me see if I will even be in there first!!

Something about that Avatar has me saying, DUDE!

So, I watched the start of the race, then tuned in with 16 laps to go. Unfortunately, it seems many may have done the same.

WHY? WHY? Does FOX Sports or any tv stations anymore half to make everything a big extravaganza. Why couldn't they do like old time racing a half hour pregame and then RACE. If they didn't have to outrageous money and five announcers they wouldn't have to take a commercial every 5 laps. And all there fancy gadgets just show the damn race or game. I think FOX Sports has ruined sports on TV. They ruined NASCAR and New Years Day buying up all the games and spreading them out over a week instead of one day.
