Tonight the most storied team in the history of American sports, the New York Yankees visit minute Maid Park for the first time to open a 3 game series against the Houston Astros. Unfortunately I will be unable to attend since I am in the process of moving and we all know of the effort and energy that entails. However, I will be following with great interest and I hope something special and memorable will occur. Afterall, the Yankees do not visit these parts often. In fact, the next time they come to town, A-Rod, and Jeter will probably be retired.
As a boy growing up in Texas in the 60's I loved to read. Reading was my first"escape." I also loved sports, so reading about the sports legends from the past was a natural. I was captivated by the stories of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe Dimaggio, and Mickey Mantle. I wanted to grow up and play centerfield for either the Yankees or my hometown team the Astros. Neither of these events came true obviously so this series is about as close as I can get.
Suddenly I am thinking about a comparison of these two teams greatest players so here we go.

So there really is no comparison with the every day players...Yankees by a mile. But I will give the edge to the Astros on the mound...Thanks for dropping into Canyon Corner. Have a good one!
yanks are going to love astro's ballpark and the pitchers, red sox coming here, end of the month, manny will love left field-how many hr's will both team-hit at minute maid!
I still haven't forgotten when 6 Astros pitchers combined to no-hit the mighty Yankees 2 years ago. Of course, I hope THAT doesn't happen again - some pinstripe pitching of our own occasionally would sure be helpful.
husker, your comment is very profound. I guess a "duh" would be apropriate for it. And only Boston fans like Boston and only Detroit fans like Detroit...it's funny how that works out.
husker, other than the Cubs who are a media darling, I would agree with your statement about teams on the coast. And I certainly agree with 18zebra that it is, indeed, only a game. But it sure is fun to trash talk a little isn't it?
Througout the years of my life, there has always been one constant...th e love of sports and the drama and entertainment they bring.I am a true romantic in every sense of the word. And with sports,at times i have been moved to tears while embracing the finer qualities of Man which on rare and beautiful occasions rise to the surface for all to behold... on fields of dreams. So, let me experience the joy of winning, the pain of losing, the thrill of victory, and the agony of defeat...Let me live! For"Deep in his heart, every man longs for a battle to fight,an adventure to live, and a beauty to rescue. That is how he bears the image of God;that is what God made him to be."
