This and That in sports
Oct 15, 2007 | 9:53AM | report this

Ohio St. is the new #1 team. Of course, they couldn’t have done it without a little help. #1 LSU and #2 California both lost, which opened the door for Ohio St. to become #1. LSU fell to #5 while California fell to #10. California had a chance to be #1, but they just couldn’t manage a win.

Wisconsin

This past Saturday, Penn State beat Wisconsin 38-7. I have to say, that I thought that game would’ve been closer than it was. I’ve been hearing all season, that the Badgers aren’t that good. Yet, they have been ranked all season. I actually couldn’t believe that they were #5 a couple of weeks ago. I didn’t think they played well enough to be #5, however that was the same week were a bunch other top teams lost, which allowed the Badgers to squeeze in there. We all know what happened next. That’s right, that big red blob you saw fall after the games played on 10/6, was indeed the Badgers. And after their loss to Penn State, the Badgers continue to fall. The big red blob has fallen out of the rankings, and will continue to fall unless they can find a way to turn around their season. I thought Wisconsin was supposed to be better than this. They had so much hype going into the season, and now it appears that the wheels have indeed fallen off.

Michigan

After falling out of the rankings after the first week, Michigan has fought their way back into the rankings. After Week 1, that blue and maize blob continued to fall, but it appears that they have found their way back. Here’s to hoping that the Wolverines stay ranked for the rest of the season.

Colorado Rockies

If someone had told me at the beginning of the season that the Rockies were going to be in the playoffs, let alone the NLCS, I probably would’ve laughed at them. Now, if someone tells me that the Rockies are going to the World Series, I’d have to agree with them. The Rockies are just one win away from making the World Series. A win tonight will put them in. I underestimated the Rockies; I thought for sure they weren’t going to make it out of the first round. Now, they have a chance to go all the way. I’m a little surprised that the Diamondbacks haven’t won a game yet. I expected them to play a little better than what they have been.

ALCS

The ALCS is all tied up at one each. The Red Sox won game one and the Indians managed to win game two. It took eleven innings for them to finish game two. Going into the top of the 11th, the game was all tied up at six. Eric Gagne started of the inning. As we have seen since Gagne became a Red Sox, he once again blew it for them. The Indians scored seven runs in that 11th inning, three of which were charged to Gagne. If you are the Red Sox, you have to be careful on where you use Gagne. The best option would be to not use him at all, but for the most part, that probably isn’t going to be an option. Cleveland did what they needed to do in Boston, get a split. The series now move to Cleveland, and I like Cleveland’s chances at home.

NASCAR

The Chase is starting to heat up. Jeff Gordon has finally opened somewhat of a sizeable lead over Jimmie Johnson. Gordon leads Johnson by 68 points. The first few weeks of the chase, everybody was so close. Then it started to spread out some more. So much so, that going into Saturday night’s race, 6th place Kevin Harvick was closer to 12th place then he was 1st place. As of right now, there are only 78 points that separate 1st and 3rd. You could pretty much say that this a three man race right now, but it appears that Jeff Gordon is the man to beat.

For sure, the Badgers laid an egg on Saturday. I was surprised myself, yet quite pleased. The few beers I had went down easy during that game, and that was the first Big Ten PSU game in a while that I didn't feel stressed at all...

The Rox did it again... 21 of 22... unreal. Hmm, the eight days off may hurt them... then again, who knows... maybe they'll keep it rolling yet again.

See ya...

KP,
I'm glad you enjoyed your beers and the game. I haven't felt stressed at all this year during a Michigan game. Mostly because everyother game they play I'm sleeping through it thanks to work.

I'm not so sure that the eight days off will really affect the Rockies. I mean they had four days off before the NLCS and they seemed ok on that. That eight days could be deadly to either them or the other team. Guess we'll just have to wait and see. Rockies are on fire, I kinda of feel bad for the team who has to face them. Although, I'll be rooting for the Rockies, no matter who advances from the AL.

it's safe to say the B10 is without a doubt having a down year now. (more on that on my blog later ***shameless promo***)

i actually saw this coming from wisconsin. they've been on thin ice all year defensively. the only thing that shocks me is that it took this long for an opposing offense to really take it to us.

our offense didnt help them out any, giving up the ball inside our own 20 on the 1st play from scrimmage, and tossing 2 gimme INT's (that i know of, might have been more after i left for work).

michigan could still win the B10, but i'd find it hard to buy them as a BCS team after losing to apple dumpling state and oregon to start the year.

the rockies are collectively in the zone right now. i'm not sure they belong in the playoffs though, since they were only a wild card, and sweeping the d-backs only proves the d-backs didnt belong either (sarcasm).

i'm praying cleveland wins this series. i'm so sick of hearing about boston (along with the yankees, since you cant mention 1 without the other) i'd almost rather watch golf.

nascar is about as exciting as golf. that's all i have to say about that.

Ohio State should play a real team for once instead of KENT STATE!!!

Cuz,
Yeah, Wisconsin just keeps on falling. Not really living up to all the expectations are they? Yeah, I don't know if they had more than 2 INT's. I don't remember hearing about more than 2. I didn't get a chance to watch the game, I was sleeping, that was my weekend to work.
Now, wouldn't that be something if Michigan where to win the Big Ten? They have to find a way to beat Ohio St. this year.
I hope the Rockies win the world series. I don't care who they play. Yeah, I'm pulling for Cleveland as well. I mean I always hate to root for the team that knocked my team out of the playoffs, but if it's between them or the Red Sox, I will always pick the other team. I'll never root for the Red Sox. It's a sin, it's just wrong.
NASCAR isn't for everyone. Some people just can't get into. Although, if you had to pick between golf and nascar, which would you pick?

JP,
Amen to that. Can we get a real team for Ohio St. Their schedule has been like a walk in the park so far.

bubbles- i was saying when the first preseason rankings came out wisconsin was way too high, and never do well with high preseason expectations. seems i was right. (newsflash)

if i had to pick between nascar and golf, i'd combine them (like they used to do on those old beer commercials) and have nascar golf. tiger woods trying to sink a 20 foot putt from pit row, and earnhardt jr. bearing down on him as he comes in for a tire change.
then you'd have john daly hitting off the 18th tee right in the middle of the track, and every driver being afraid to hit him as it would turn their car into a pile of rubble.

now THAT would be fun....well, kinda.
