The Eagles have to be pleased by what they saw on Friday Night in Donovan McNabb’s debut following a tough rehab from a serious knee injury.
The Eagles rallied to make the playoffs with Jeff Garcia at quarterback last season. But they were getting by in the passing game with smoke and mirrors as Garcia’s limitations were exposed down the stretch. Brian Westbrook carried the offense as Garcia faded. Now with a healthy McNabb, the Eagles look to have a dangerous offense this season.
Some observers are skeptical about the big-play ability of the offense after allowing Donte’ Stallworth to sign elsewhere this spring, but McNabb has a solid group of receivers to spread the ball around. This allows the Eagles to get back to the roots of Andy Reid’s philosophy to avoid relying on one primary option to build a passing game around. Reggie Brown has emerged as a playmaker. He lacks breaking speed and will drop a few balls, but has shown he knows how to get open and make big plays in clutch situations.
Former Ram Kevin Curtis replaces Stallworth. Curtis lacks the size and ability to create matchup problems downfield like Stallworth, but is more consistent and has enough speed to make plays in Reid’s ball-control passing game. Hank Baskett and Jason Avant have emerged as solid targets in their second seasons. Baskett has good size and toughness, but is also a deceptive playmaker downfield. Avant has proven he can be a reliable option in traffic with his hands and toughness.
L.J. Smith has good athletic skills from the tight end spot, but the Eagles are still waiting for him to display more consistency and avoid nagging injuries. Meanwhile, rookie Brent Celek has displayed the ability to become a solid intermediate target during camp.
Packers rely on youth: The Packers finally pulled the plug on Robert Ferguson. Drafted by Green Bay in the second round in 2001 based on his tremendous blend of speed and physical skills, Ferguson never developed into the consistent playmaker the Packers envisioned. His numerous injuries over the years curtailed his developmental time on the field early in his career. This was the right move by the Packers. Organizations often have the tough task to balance when its time to give up on a high round draft choice. Generally, when you realize a young player can’t play and shows little chance for development, its best to cut ties sooner than later. On the other end of the spectrum, organizations also need to show patience with good athletes. In the Packers’ situation, they’ve given Ferguson a couple years longer than normal. Now, the Packers have collected a group of younger receivers that have shown enough to for them to build behind Donald Driver. Greg Jennings showed good maturity as a rookie last season and added some bulk over the spring. Rookie James Jones has opened a lot of eyes this summer. Jones displays a tremendous blend of physical skills and ball skills. Ruvell Martin has developed into a steady option over the middle with his physical skills. And Carlyle Holiday rounds out this unit with his excellent size and athletic ability. Holiday displayed flashes at wide receiver last season.
Jaguars changing guard at wide receiver: It’s no secret that Jack Del Rio has grown frustrated with the inconsistency of his wide receivers over the past couple years. It has reached a boiling point – especially with Reggie Williams. Williams continues to struggle separating from defenders and make plays with the ball. And for a receiver that struggles to make plays, he doesn’t catch the ball consistency enough. Look for Williams to hit the waiver wire later this month. Dennis Northcutt and rookie Mike Walker have been their best targets this summer. Northcutt runs the best routes and has brought a level of professionalism to a young unit, but he’s a number three receiver at best for many teams because he lacks ideal size and speed. Walker also lacks speed, but catches the ball well and displays a lot of natural skills for a rookie. Unfortunately, many scouts around the league have concerns about the long-term durability of Walker, who suffered a serious knee injury in college. Rookie Charles Sharon has shown good hands and the ability to make some plays with ball.
In Blakely The Falcons Trust: With knee problems slowing Alge Crumpler again, Dwayne Blakely has capitalized on the opportunity to establish himself within the offense. Blakely has always had good athletic ability, but is showing the ability to make plays down the seam with his toughness and ability to leap in traffic. With Crumpler and Blakely, the Falcons have two tight ends who can line up in slot and create favorable matchups in the passing game. Meanwhile, the Falcons must closely monitor Crumpler’s knee problems this season as he turns 30 in December. Crumpler has had knee problems in the past and there is some concern about his long-term durability.
Bills look to establish run: Being a Mike Martz-disciple, many people view Steve Fairchild as a passing guy. But Fairchild’s objective since arriving in Buffalo has been to establish a productive run game. Fairchild never had much confidence in Willis McGahee last season – especially with his lack of versatility. Now with rookie Marshawn #### replacing McGahee, look for Fairchild to implement his vision for a multifaceted backfield. #### has impressed the Bills with his excellent speed and quickness – especially in open space. Expect #### to make a major impact in the passing game with his ability to create matchup problems for linebackers. In addition to #### creating headlines, veteran Anthony Thomas is having a very solid camp. Thomas has displayed an extra bounce in his step this summer and has looked his best in years to provide a solid complement to #### in the backfield.
What the hell do they mean curtis "lacks the size" that stallworth had and the playmaking ability
ok Stallworth was good BUT he missed how many games to injury?
and also stallworth is barely 6 foot and so is curtis...so im not seeing the huge size difference
The Eagles offense will be better if they run the ball and they have a big back in tony hunt, and curtis is 2" smaller then Stallworth, and curtis has better hands and the o-line is great as long as andrews gets back be for the season
I KNOW I AM A DALLAS FAN, BUT I HAVE A VALID QUESTION. WHY DOES EVERYONE INSIST THAT DONOVAN MCNABB WAS SO GREAT LAST YEAR? I MAY BE WRONG, BUT TO MY KNOWLEDGE WASNT HE LIKE 3 AND 6 OR 4 AND 6? DONT GET ME WRONG, HE HAD THE STATS, BUT WHEN DOES ACTUALLY HAVING A WINNING RECORD COME INTO PLAY?
hey brohymn619, calm down. your cowboys lost to the lions (what did they finish, like 2-14 or something?) in their last game last season. the eagles will win the division again this year, and they have a pretty good chance of "spanking" your team. cowboys fans are so irrational.
PHILLY IS GOOD FOR THREE THINGS ROCKY, BOYZ 2 MEN AND B HOP THEY HAVE NEVER EVER WON A SUPERBOWL AND NEVER EVER WILL MAYBE IGUODALA WILL LEAD THE 76ERS TO A TITLE
Hey guys, let's have fun and stick to football talk. I agree with the comment about the Eagles' run game. Brian Westbrook's contribution to the offense last season can't be understated. In carrying a bigger load after McNabb was out last season, I hope he's turned the corner to the next level like Tiki Barber did when he finally answered questions on whether he was a 10-15 carry guy or a 20-25 carry guy. And having rookie Tony Hunt to handle short yardage situations is a plus too. This should be a well-balanced offense that can score points.
What kind of research has Mr. Delucia done on Kevin Curtis. If he had done anything he would have noted two things. Kevin is faster than Stallworth and even ran some sub 4.3 forty times when he was drafted. Secondly he was a big play guy with St. Louis especially the year he started when Bruce was injured on the outside. He had several touchdowns of 50 + yards including an 83 yard reception for a TD in the playoffs.
Curtis will surprise you. I think that just because he's white and only 5'10 everybody trys to make him out to be the stereotyped "possession reciever". Yeah, he can do that too because of his precision routes and hands, but he will be a more reliable deap threat than even Stallworth was.
He has had one of the highest per catch averages in the NFL over the past 3-4 years and he had one of the highest percentage of catches per balls thrown in the NFL last year.
I've seen several comments by reporters in Philadephia trying to insinuate that the Eagles downgraded as far as speed by letting Stallworth go and picking up Curtis. Anyone who fact checks even a little bit shouldn't have missed that one.
I am sorry you feel this way, but I don't recall saying anything negative about Curtis or referring to him having less speed than Stallworth. Stallworth has the ability to create certain matchup problems in the passing game, but I feel Curtis is more consistent, has good speed to provide spark within the passing game, and creates favorable matchups in a different variety than Stallworth. Curtis has had a better career track record than Stallworth due to playing with better consistency and Stallworth's problems staying on the field every season.
I am also sorry that you feel I don't do my homework. When it involves personnel, I track personnel in the same manner as all 32 Pro Personnel Directors do in terms of film study, charting, and grading personnel -- along with understanding how they fit into different systems, organizational cultures, and how they would mesh with position coaches in terms of personality and coaching style. I also do cross-checks with other personnel guys around the league. I am definitely not right on every player as is the case with the best scouts in the league, but I've received many comments on having a better grasp on personnel than many of the directors.
I can assure you that I helping pass along to you as much insight on what happens behind the scenes as I can.
Thanks again for taking the opportunity to voice your concerns.
You brought up a point I am sure many fans wonder about at times. Scouts and coaches make a big deal on one inch. LOL. It's a game of inches.
But more importantly, size is more than just height. There's a big difference when scouts compare the size of 6'0" 220 vs. 5"11" 185.
I agree with your feelings about Stallworth's track record on injuries. That is one area that has always bothered me about Stallworth. He's had a lot of leg problems during his career and relies too much on his speed.
Stallworth is a player who I always thought could make a major impact dating back to when I evaluated his college tapes back at Tennessee if he polished his game and could stay healthy enough to start 16 games.
Has anyone else had the opportunity to watch Buffalo's Marshawn #### or Green Bay's James Jones during the preseason?
#### is going to be an interesting player in Buffalo right from the start. His versatility and athleticism will be a dynamic fit in Steve Fairchild's offense.
Jones will have a tougher adjustment at wide receiver during the regular season as coordinators scheme against him, but he's displayed very strong physical skills early. He's going to be a solid long-term building block there in Green Bay.
How come the cryboys always say they're going to kick our #### every year ???? I believe we swept you twice last season. And yes, you did go unbeaten in the preseason last year. What did that do for your team ???? You'll see that good ole Wade Phillips won't get you through the first round of the playoffs!!! Again, he inherited a Bill Parcell team, and he'll do much worse than Billy P. He was left with a ready made team, if the cowboys get anywhere it's because of BP.
By the way: GET YOUR POPCORN READY !!! LOL.

baileyboy, how about sticking to this year. All i hear all the time is the Eagles did this and that last year. Well last year is gone my friend. This year is a whole new year. I know cowboy fans do it also, but if you dont want to hear about all the rings and years that Dallas won the division, stick to the coming year. I will be the first to tell you, that I think we are better this year, and I think we will beat you guys atleast once. As for W.P and Parcells. I believe Parcells took this team from a losing team and built it up to a winning one. As for Phillips, you guys can blame a good season all you want on Parcells. Phillips brings the whole package when it comes to defense. Defense will make this team better than last year. The last thing I will touch on is T.O. i belive the guy will be just fine here. All the guy wants is to get paid the money he deserves and get the ball thrown to him so he can make plays, just like all the other wideouts in the league. He is just more vocal about it. (and a q.b that wont quit on him) i had to have atlest one crack at Mcnabb. All said, I think we have a better team this year and a will win the east.
I don't know why people keep bringing up how much of a loss Stallworth is. He was with the Birds ONE year. It's not like he was such an integral part of this team. McNabb got to 3 NFCCG's with 2nd and 3rd string receivers.
mcnutts mom ran out of chunky soup for her kids, not she'll have to feed them purina puppy chow, but too late their seasons over before it starts and mcnuttt wont be there or anywhere next year, his sorry #### is done
i just want tony hunt to develop into the next larry johnson, i think that kid is awesome and i hope reid gives him a shot to actually get some quality carriers
Wow, haven't we heard enough of this Mcnabb needs to play a full good season before anything about him is good for the Eagles. Unless he has a pro bowl year Eagles fans will be bashing Mcnabb next year too when he's in Atlanta or Minnesota
I must agree it looks like the "perfect storm" could be brewing in the NFC east this season.I hate to say it but Mcnabb looked good against Carolina! Dallas looked good as a whole against Denver....so lets get it! 2008 looks like its gonna be a good one!I still think Mcnabb needs a true test...Carolina without Julius Peppers couldn't put on any pressure...and they have a terrible secondary! But still Mcnabb looked impressive , he brings the level up of everyone around him , but if he goes down you suddenly have no receivers , no QB , and the pressuer will be on Westbrook.
i think the eagles will be good as long as mcnabb stays heathy and also they need to run the ball...the eagles should be number 1 in the divison, then the cowboys, then the redskins and then the giants....
Romo has not given anyone reason to doubt? The defense faded last year and went from #3 overall to like #10 overall in the last 5 games. Oh but he did fumble that snap , huh...who cares , we will see where the Eagles are after week 9 . Like I said, Mcnabb looked good but was in the perfect comeback game against a Carolina D w/o their star player and a lacking secondary. Mcnabb hasn't been REALLY tested yet and I would bet he won't be tested until the season as he probably won't go more than a couple more series the rest of preseason.....
did you see any of the pack high lights from sat?
remember i said to catch our rookie jones the receiver! also the d-line was awesome! pre-season i know but they are getting much better.
I don't follow the Jaguars that closely. But last year there seemed to be some tension between Lefwich and Del Rio. Has this situation changed during the offseason? Or is there a QB contoversy in Jax?
mac looked good. hes almost back looked good! the d-line on g.b is awesome beware opening day! p.s i was right they did get rid of fergy might make a good back up in philly there`s a rumor they are looking at him! oh yeah jackson ran well against seattle`s no 1 defense.
Murphy3 They did look good. My question is Where was the O-line for the Hawks? They made Jenkins look like a All Pro DE. We'll see what happens come week 1. Trucowboy i dont care about the stats. I care about he just looked good. The way he moved around thats what im happy with. I know its preseason against a team that wasnt playing everyone but he just looked good in the pocket. We'll see how he reacts when he gets pressured. An when it comes to Romo just remember how he finished the season off last year. An not just the playoff game that he choked in. He was strugglin towards the end of the year.
Hi Sports Guy, I wasn't making any specific reference on Stallworth's size. I know he ranges in the 195-200 range, although he does look like he has more bulk than that. I believe he has a lot of bulk in his legs, which creates some of his hamstring problems.
I like the Eagles' wideouts too. I really feel they are well-balanced there. Curtis and Brown will be solid starters. They both have good speed and can make plays. I like Hank Baskett's size. And Jason Avant is a nice backup with his toughness over the middle of the field. Those are four quality receivers.
I personally like that too when you have that balance that rely too much on one receiver.
There's a little bit of an underlying rift yet in Jacksonville because Leftwich feels hurt on how his situation was handled. He's got a great rapport with their new offensive coordinator, Dirk Koetter.
Leftwich is clearly the guy in Jacksonville right now. He's in great shape right now and has a renewed mindset. David Garrard was exposed last season as he played more. Garrard is too sloppy with the ball.
But we'll see how the situation plays out during the season because Jacksonville has a subpar group of receivers that have trouble separating from defenders.
I dont think there is any way Mcnabb can stay healthy for a whole season. If he somehow makes it to week nine, then he will have a true test facing demarcus ware. The cowboys offense will be unstopable this season with glenn, TO, witten, Jones & Barber. Romo might not even have to throw the ball with thier running game.
In regards to New England, I believe Vinny Testaverde will get the call if its for a couple games or late in the season into the playoffs if something happened to Brady.
If its a long-term injury that Brady would suffer, Cassel would get the call at some point. Cassel has the skills to play at this level, but having virtually little experience is a major concern - hence the reason they keep bring Testaverde into the mix.
No question it would be a clear downgrade from Brady if he would go down with an injury.
In regards to Tony Romo .... I believe we saw that Romo can play in the NFL. The thing we need to see and most scouts will be watching is how he makes adjustments to what defenses are throwing at him this season. He struggled at times when opposing coordinators were able to get pressure on him. He's going to need to recognize what opponents are throwing at him and making better decisions with the ball under pressure.
Week One will be a decent test against the Giants. But I believe games at Miami and at Chicago in weeks 2 and 3 will be a strong test. Dom Capers will blitz from all over the field. And the Bears will get pressure on Romo. I'll be intrigued to watch the Oct. 14 game against Belichick and the Patriots.
