The Baltimore Ravens should have another strong run left behind its core of veteran leaders. Steve McNair has been in the mix for a full off-season. Mark Clayton has emerged as a productive pass catcher. Dementrius Williams is emerging as a downfield target. Willis McGahee brings more diversity to the backfield as the Ravens are looking for a more versatile ground game. The Ravens lost a lot of versatility when Adalius Thomas signed with New England, but defense remains the foundation here. They still have a core of strong difference makers on this side of the ball. They can still get after the passer and create turnovers. Terrell Suggs continues to develop into a monster off the edge. Ray Lewis and Bart Scott make a lot of stops against the run. Ed Reed plays a big role in the middle of the secondary. Depth at cornerback is the only concern. There will be a lot of eyes on whether Samari Rolle can rebound after an off-year.
The Cincinnati Bengals will score points. Carson Palmer can beat teams through the air with Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh. Rudi Johnson leads a powerful run game. Losing Eric Steinbach will be tough. That leaves two young players working next to each other in Andrew Whitworth and Eric Ghiaciuc along the offensive line. Defense remains a concern. They have a lot of young players who must mature fast. They have a lot of solid role players along the front four, but lack the ability to disrupt teams and overpower them at the line of scrimmage. The coaches rave at the potential of Ahmad Brooks and Rashad Jeanty at linebacker, but inexperience is a big factor here. The same holds true at cornerback. Jonathan Joseph and Leon Hall eventually should develop into a solid tandem, but need time to develop. There will be a lot of eyes on Madieu Williams at safety. He’s a good athlete, but must create more turnovers to lift this defense. Overall, they will make a playoff push, but could need another season to develop on the defensive side of the ball. This team also needs a stronger presence of veteran leadership across the board.
There is a lot of mystery surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers. There are always questions when you bring in a new coach – especially in this situation. They lost a few valuable assistants on the offensive staff. Mike Tomlin is a defensive coach adapting to the Pittsburgh philosophy. Another question is Ben Roethlisberger at quarterback. Roethlisberger must take his game to another level and cut down on mistakes. It all comes down to his approach to the game. The Steelers have a few solid targets to build around in the passing game. Hines Ward remains productive. Santonio Holmes has the ability to play a big role downfield and they must maximize Heath Miller’s tools in the passing game. They do have questions along the offensive line and lose some stability without Jeff Hartings in the pivot. They must get better play from the tackle positions. I think they will miss Russ Grimm coaching this unit. Pittsburgh will remain a strong club defensively, which will keep them in playoff contention. They might lack a top pass rusher off the edge, but have a strong group within the front seven. Troy Polamalu is a strong presence in the secondary, but they need to create more turnovers. Bryant McFadden has the ability to make plays at cornerback. And they are intrigued with the upside of Anthony Smith at free safety.
The Cleveland Browns are starting to build a young core on both sides of the ball, but they need to be patient and let this group grow together for a few years. Jamal Lewis and the upgrades along the front line bring more stability on the offensive side of the ball, but inexperience at the quarterback position will cause growing pains. Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow are nice targets to build around in the passing game, although scouts question the makeup of both players. Kamerion Wimberly will be a beast off the perimeter. Andra Davis heads up a group of solid linebackers inside. Sean Jones became a solid performer at safety last season. Rookie Eric Wright will be a factor at cornerback quickly. He has the speed and playmaking ability to speed up the rebuilding project on defense.
i hope you're right. as a life long steeler fan, i'm confused & upset about our off season. tomlin has 1 year experience as a coordinator. and i don't like the way they handled the coaching changes or the porter loss. not to mention the way they're treating faneca. i hate to be negative...but i think we're looking at a disaster in pittsburgh.
As a hardcore ravens fan, I have to say that the Ravens are the strongest team in the AFC North. I think the Steelers could be good but they have too many pieces missing, and the new coach has to prove himself.
I think the Steelers and Ben Roethelisberger will have strong years. Ben's play was far from the only promblem last year, as seemingly the whole team mailed in last season. I think the shake ups that did happen will be good for the Steelers, espcially Ben. Few quarterbacks in history had to deal with the type of off-season that Ben had to go through. I think Joey Porter will be more missed in lockeroom then on the field, where I think he departure has been exaggeratted. Willie P will have another strong season, make no mistake, this the best back in the division and the best that nobody knows about, but that will change. The Steelers have already responded well to Mike Tomlin, save Alan Faneca, who really needs to get over the fact that Russ Grimm isn't the coach, and contract stuff will work itself out.
I think you all are losers, the Bengals are the best team in the AFC North. Willis McGahee is injury-prone, the Steelers are losing their Super Bowl Core, and the Browns... The Bengals are poised and ready to attack. Who-Dey!
o yeah the bengals are strong with eric steinbach right? and hows that defense comin? i dont think so good
the bengals have a fine offense but they cant support themselves and carson will have less protection w/ the loss of steinbach
the steelers, even w/ their losses will make a strong push for the title, but even though im a hardcore steelers fan i think they will get a wildcard, not the division
as for the ravens, yeah they'll prolly win the AFC North... but this may be one of the last years, adalius thomas is gone, and everyone on that team from Ray lewis to Jonathan Ogden to Steve McNair are aging...
honestly the real sleeper team for years to come is the browns.. maybe not this year or next but they have a great young core of players both offensively and defensively
THe Queerlers, Bungals and Brown Stains have a long way to go to equal the awesome power and dominance of the greatest team in the AFC North and the #1 defense in the NFL...you all saw it last year, now get ready to be put to shame again. The Ravens defense will suck the life out of anybody, especially the trouble riddled teams of the AFC North. The Queelers and the Brown Stains will be lucky to play .500 ball, while the Bungals might show up...but that of course is at the discretion of their parole officers, and their ability to remove their ankle monitors...
Football season is coming up...my God, I do love it so! Good luck to all, I hope we have a great season, there are no tragedies on or off the field and we can all look back and remember what a great year 2007 was in the AFC North.
I agree on the comments about the Bengals. They do have a very talented team, but now must begin proving themselves down the stretch and defensively. They are building a nice collection of young players on defense that must now develop and gain experience. How quickly that happens determines how far the Bengals go this season. I would have also liked to seen them add a veteran leader who has a strong playoff track record to help nurture the younger guys.
The Steelers are a tough team to project this season. I know many personnel guys are curious to see how they respond with all the changes. They have to get used to a new head coach. But the losses of Whisenhunt and Grimm are huge. A lot of pressure is on Roethlisberger to step up his approach and cut down on mistakes. This could be a 10-6, 9-7 team or easily be a 7-9 team. They do have Willie Parker and Hinds Ward. Miller and Holmes are solid young players who should play a bigger role in the passing game.
I think the AFC North will be won by the Ravens. The Willis Mcgahee aquisition will be a big reason for their sucess. The Bengals will take second and be a wildcard if they can keep their team out of jail. The Steelers will be third and miss the playoffs. Well the Browns are the Browns and are not quite ready for a run at the title

Myself being a longtime Steelers fan, I gotta tell ya the Ravens look like the team to beat, they want revenge for what happen in that colts game, look for the Ravens to go all the way!! go steelers!
As much as this pains me to say, being a steeler fan, the ravens are the team to beat this year. Mcnair still has 1 or 2 in him and with the addition of "whatch'a talkin bout Willis" mcgahee and that "d" they are good. The bungholes can't win the one that counts so forget those losers, and the browns are still a couple of years away. GO STEELERS
The MEN OF STEEL will prevail this season in the NFL's strongest division. They will win it the old fashioned way, with a run-oriented, ball controlled offense and a smash mouth dominant defense! I look for Pittsburgh to make a run at an unprecedented 6th Super Bowl Title!!
All I care about in terms of the AFC North is that the Cleveland Browns get absolutely smashed. I hope the other teams have amazing seasons and obliterate the Browns. Ideally, the Browns will be the first team ever to go 0-16 (assuring they have the number 1 overall selection).
I am a die hard browns fan but I am realistic but does anyone agree with me on this? The ravens are the team to beat because of course they won the division last year and then the bengals will contend for a wild card spot.....the steelers are way to unpredictable right now but my gut feeling is about 8-8 and with the browns I seem them being kind of like the Bengals go 8-8 for a few seasons then the things finally click...thats just my opinion
I believe that the Brownies are going to mature as a team much sooner than most analysts believe, free agency aquisistions, good draft picks with Thomas being an immediate relief for a dismal offensive line, the Ravens brute running back, Winslow, Edwards, help from the Bengals lineman, a bit of all AFC North teams and maybe a 9-7 record, saving Crennels bootie just in time for a wildcard birth within their grasps
