Eagles Land Curtis
Mar 16, 2007 | 11:06AM | report this

The question weighed here is whether the Eagles come out ahead with Kevin Curtis after allowing Donte’ Stallworth to sign elsewhere.

The Eagles look at both sides of the scale.

There’s no question about Stallworth’s ability to create matchup problems downfield and the upside he still possesses at his age.  If Stallworth can shake off injury problems, he could be an ascending player over the next few years with his size and playmaking ability.  At the same time, he’s not an overly polished receiver and will drop some balls.  There are a lot of dependability concerns here.   That doesn't play well inside Andy Reid's Regime.

As for Kevin Curtis, he may not have the size and create matchup problems like Stallworth, but he’s smart and reliable.  Curtis is a very fluid athlete who runs very good routes and can make plays with the ball in his hands.  Curtis will have some trouble against physical defenders in tight coverage, but won’t back down from anybody.

Curtis emerged as a productive slot receiver the past two years after suffering a broken leg in 2003.  He grades as an adequate to solid number two receiver who can play all three wide receiver spots.  At age 29 this summer, Curtis should have a few solid seasons with the Eagles.

Curtis will join progressing Reggie Brown in the starting lineup at wide receiver.  Neither is the big, physical receiver teams would like to build their passing game around, but the Eagles spread the ball around to several pass catchers.  Brown and Curtis are both solid athletes who will make plays.  Hank Baskett should see his role grow in the passing game with his size and toughness.  Baskett also has shown the ability to make big plays, which made the Eagles feel more comfortable about letting Stallworth go.  Greg Lewis and Jason Avant offer solid depth at the bottom of the depth chart.  Lewis can make occasional big plays downfield with his speed and Avant has shown he could develop into a dependable target in the intermediate passing game.

Overall, the Eagles should have a productive passing game with several diverse targets to build around over the next few years.

I wouldn't get too excited about another team's slot receiver, but he'll be the top receiver for the Eagles.

I see this as a very good aquisition. Curtis played with two of the best receivers on the planet(Holt and Bruce) in an offense called the Greatest Show on Turf. With the emergence of Reggie Brown and the development of Hank Baskett as well as the steady play of LJ Smith at tightend and Brian Westbrook's ability to catch the ball. The Eagles are set at receiver. Lewis and Avant and KR/WR aquisition Bethel Johnson give this unit nice depth. This is not going to be the issue, we know the Eagles can throw the ball. The question will be whether they continue to run the ball like they did the second half of the season as they did last year. The addition of a big, fast, physical runner would put this team on the right course offensively. Defensivly, if the front four gets penetration and pressure on the quarterback, Jessica Simpson could play linebacker.

I want the eagles to go get Calvin Johnson!! and trade away their 1st rounder for this year and next year plus a player like Jaqua Thomas or Darren Howard. Picking late in 1st round has not worked for the eagles.

the problem with the Eagles (and the Pats) is that they would rather force a square peg into a round hole than pay someone what they are worth. the league turnover rate is about 30% - per an SI article i just read. i also recall ESPN saying that the eagles have a nearly 61% turnover rate over 3 years. they pick up and lose more players than any other team - its all about money. Philly is a big market team, so ya'll can afford to pay players - you just dont. the only player left on the team from 5 years ago is your QB. you let RBs go and lost the ability to run. you let defensive players go and couldnt stop the run. you let DBs go let the 49ers drop 350 yards on you. it doesnt make any damn sense. the eagles wont even keep players that arent asking for huge raises. had TO not thrown a hissy, Westbrook would have bee another casualty. his contract was u at the end of that season and they wouldnt even speak to him about it. TO gets bounced and suddenly Westbrook is signed. i think he's the only eagle player to renegotiate a contract mid season this decade. the eagles will never win the superbowl as long as they are trading Stallworths for KCs. hat was dumb. if he was any good, the Rams would have kept him.
