Donnie Edwards brings diversity to the Cheifs’ defense next season including excellent leadership ability. Edwards makes a lot of plays in the run game with his range and hustle, but his biggest impact will be against the pass. Edwards is an extremely smart pass defender who fits Herman Edwards’ cover-2 scheme.
Although he’s coming off a strong year in San Diego – two questions will be pondered over the next few months. He’ll turn 34 next month and he won’t be protected behind the same caliber of players like he was in San Diego.
The Chiefs are looking for more production from their linebackers next season. They signed Napoleon Harris last week to take over in the middle. Harris played well as the middle linebacker in Mike Tomlin’s cover-2 defense last season with Minnesota. Edwards is the versatile type of athlete Gunther Cunningham loves designing plays around in defense. Edwards should also become a solid influence on young linebacker Derrick Johnson. It should be interesting to see how Cunningham utilizes the talent he’s acquired this off-season.
Any time you can add a football player like Donnie Edwards to your team, you've upgraded significantly. I know he's 34, but the guy just isn't running out of gas yet. What did he have, 18 tackles in one of the playoff games last season? Great pickup by the Chiefs. I was hoping he'd join the Dallas 34 for a year or two to cap of his career. Kudos to the Chiefs for landing this guy. He'll bring alot to their defense.
