I knew it was going to happen. I should have been prepared and actually thought I was, but as it turns out, I wasn’t. It was inevitable that the secret would get out and the rest of the area would find out about the Tampa Bay Rays and start going to ball games at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg.
Now most folks think that this is a good thing. Others simply don’t care and then there is me. I don’t like it. You see, I have grown accustomed to being able to sit anywhere I wanted to, whenever I wanted to at that ballpark. I have grown accustomed to getting a hot dog or a sausage sandwich whenever I wanted it without having to wait in line. I have grown accustomed to waiting until the last minute to use the head because there was no chance that I would have to wait in line. Alas, that is no longer the case.
Last Thursday night I missed almost a full inning of the Cubs/Rays game just getting a hot dog and a Pepsi. I had to wait in line at the food counter and then had to wait in line at the condiment counter. By the time I got back to my seat the inning was almost over and the dog was cold. Thank goodness nothing much happened while I was gone and thank goodness that I’m too lazy to keep score. Later in the game I postponed a trip to the rest room because there was good stuff happening on the field. It never occurred to me that there would be a line at the urinals when I finally did get up to take care of my plumbing issues, but there it was at a most inconvenient time. I had to pay a kid in front of me three bucks to let me go in front of him to avoid an embarrassing accident. He wanted five but I guess I convinced him that I didn’t have any more cash and he felt sorry for me.
Now don’t get me wrong; I love the fact that the Rays are viable in the American League this year. After spending the last ten years watching them play with the worst pitching in baseball, one of the most porous defenses in baseball and rarely having more than three legitimate Major Leaguers on the field at any given time, this year is a pleasure; except for the fact that it becoming more and more uncomfortable and inconvenient to go to a ball game with all of these other people around.
I should have realized that this was going to be the way it was going to be on opening day. My wife and I had four “babes” in their early twenties sitting in front of us that didn’t seem to have any idea what was going on in the field. They would stand up in the middle of an inning for no apparent reason and would look at me like I was asking for their first born when I asked them to sit down so that I could see the game. After about four innings had elapsed, their scent had permeated every corner of the stadium and single guys were arriving alone, in pairs and at one time, five guys (all carrying their $8 beers) showed up. The problem for us was that there was no place to move to except up in the nose bleed section. We finally left the game at the seventh inning stretch rather than get into an altercation that probably would have required some kind of bail.
I guess the point of all this is that even though I want the Rays to be successful, I am not happy with all these people messing around in my sandbox. If I only went to a few games a year, I would probably accept the inconveniences that large crowds bring. But I go to a lot of games and I am becoming unhappy with the inconveniences that success brings.
It's all about the team!
The Rays are 6 games short of being exactly half way through the 2008 campaign. Their record is 44-31 as we speak and only 3 teams in Major League Baseball have a better winning percentage than the Rays have. Some interesting facts concerning the Rays season thus far:
· They have played 25 series in which they have won 14 and tied 3. Of the 14 series wins, they have swept five, which include sweeps over the Cubs, Angels, Red Sox, Orioles and Blue Jays.
· They have played 14 different baseball teams of which 11 have winning records. Only the Mariners, Astros and Blue Jays have losing records and only 12 of their 75 games (16%) have been played against those teams.
· 83% of their games have been against teams with winning records.
· They are 10-8 versus the teams in MLB that have a better winning percentage than they have, and only the Red Sox seem to have their number and then only in Fenway Park.
It makes no sense!
All this being said, there is the distinct possibility that the Tampa Bay Rays will have only one representative on the American League All-Star team this year.
· They have the 4th lowest ERA in the AL but not one pitcher stands out in statistics to justify inclusion on this team.
· B.J. Upton has had a nice year so far but I can think of 6 other AL outfielders that belong on the team before he does.
· Everyone will look at Carl Crawford as the likely selection, but he is having an off year so far.
Dioner Navarro is the MVP of this team and possibly the best choice but Mauer and Pierzynski deserve more consideration than Navi because of his time on the DL this year
How does this make any sense? They have the fourth best record in all of baseball and have played the most difficult schedule of any team so far, yet they don’t have one serious contender for the All-Star team.
yea what is so bad about (DEVIL) rays??? RAYS ONLY unless you arent talking about this??? the name change???? anyway its dumb anyway to change??? PICKY PICKY and i understand of the beef of the change your talking about also!!!!!!as i read on!!!

Gee whiz Bosox, it's really too bad you're being inconvenienced! lol The price of being a winner is steep!
I was sorry they lost yesterday. Now we'll see how they do out in the Florida elements (a glance at Rays baseball of the future?) as they take on the Marlins down in Miami.
Seems the Rays are giving it a true team effort as no one really stands out as the star of the team. I see a couple of future stars but not this season...
I guess now you think the Rays can contend for the whole season.
I also think Navarro deserves to be the All Star but I would really like to see JP Howell get a spot on the team. He has been fantastic in long relief.
I have a question for you bosox, do you think Grant Balfour will end up being the closer by September? He was dominating last night agianst the Astros, throwing consistently in the high 90's and I don't think Percival will last the whole year. But again, that's just my opinion.
Nice job as usual. What do you think the chances are the Rays make a trade for another heavy bat? I hope to run into you at a game,I'll be the one with the goofy grin on his face.
Dwindy1 - It's what they used to say about the Patriots. Sacrifice yourself for the team.
It's strange that I heard on TV yesterday that Gabe Gross leads the league in walk-off hits. I can't find that stat anywhere to confirm this. You know where to find it?
ND - Howell has been great in any role they put him in. He has made one mistake all year. He gave up that Sunday grand slam to Josh Hamilton. Unfortunately, I was there and saw that one.
I never thought Balfour should have gone down to AAA when the season started. He seems to fit well into the closer role. He's got the pitches and the attitude, but Percy is going to have to really suck it up before Maddon takes him away from closing. But then again, I can see Percy taking himself out of the role if he can't get the job done.
In the comment after yours, Aero questions whether they will trade for another bat (right handed, I assume). I see Balfour as the key to that trade if it happens.
Aero - There are a lot of guys with goofy grins these days.
I don't think they will make this trade. Salary is an issue and Friedman seems to treasure these prospects. Maybe if a RH slugger is available at a reasonable price....There are a bunch of decent prospects on the farm that are never going to get their chance with the Rays...Who know?.

You of all people ought to know by now that the All Star balloting is nothing more than a proverbial popularity contest. And were it based on anything remotely baring form at present.
Then many of us would clearly know that the Rays'd be deserving of more than one player on the All Star roster.
My greatest concern however is that with all of the politicking that's now taking place within St Petersburg and Pinellas County. The thought that they may well not end up with a new venue may well come to nothing. And if that should happen then the team'll definitely move out of the state once and for all.
They're only all too willing to give the Rays a state of the art venue in Vegas at the behest of Larry Goodman the Mayor there. And the tax breaks that they'd obtain would be far greater than anything city, county or state of Florida would be willing to give. That's the insanity of it all , as it now stands.

See my latest post within the forum and let me know what you think as to the merits of the piece ? As and when you're ready I'll look forward to reading your comments.
The piece in question is titled To Serve But To Do So With Distinction And Pride !
I was also at that game when Hamilton hit the grandslam. What a shot!
If the Rays go for a big bat like Milton Bradley or someone like that, I think they'd probably have to give up Nieman and probably Ruggiano.
What's your opinion on C.C. Sabathia? Do you think the Rays should go after him? They have the prospects to get him and can keep him away from the Yankees and the Red Soxs, which is a big plus.
I don't think they'll make the trade because of resign ability issues but could you imagine a starting rotation of Sabathia, Kazmir, Shields, Garza. Unstoppable.
I think Kasmir's stats look pretty good, but with only 62 innings pitched, i dont think there showing up anywhere yet, the minimum is probably 100 at this point.
I love the sand box comment, can't be no more honest with your self than that.
They win, you rant. They lose, you rant. The stand are empty, the stands are full. Theres just no pleasing you. But im very pleased with this post...
I find it hard to believe that no where in the power ranking report today did it mention that the Cubs were swept by the Rays. Amazing that was conveiently missed.
ND - That was the hardest ball that I have seen hit this year.
I think that Jackson is the one you shop. And if you can make Zobrist look attractive, dump him too. I never have been able to figure out what the fascination with him is. he hasn't been able to hit any where in the system and he always seems to be broken.
Sabathia will cost too much for a one season player. this is a guy who will comman 8 figures a year and I can't see the Rays paying that. But its nice to dream.
Taboo - They miss lots of stuff about the Rays. Even though people seem to take them seriously today, I think down deep they can't believe that they are actually saying the things that they are saying....like, it must be a mistake or I better be careful in what I am saying, I don't want to look foolish.
No, if by sand box you mean Ball park,i could live without ignorent people, in front, behind, or anywhere in my vacinity when im into the game. thats a whole nother post you could write.. And i'd have a whole page of comments for you LOL
I unleashed my formidable and impressive search skills on the internet and couldn't find a single reference to walk off hits in terms of a season statistic. Someone must be tracking that on their own... MLB, ESPN, Fox, CBS, Yahoo, Baseball Reference.com, and on and on had no such stat...
On one hand I'm sorry you didn't find anything; but on the other I'm glad. At least that way I don't look like a dope.
I have a friend of a friend o####uy who once dated the hairdresser of the girl whos sister used to make up the cue cards for Todd Kalas. Maybe I'll see if I can get the info from the horse's mouth...since I'm so well connected.
bosox61 The wind'll be blown out of the sails concerning the stadium issue. And if that should happen . Then I for one can see the franchise moving out of the state altogether. It's not about the fans and their apparent lackluster allegiance to the team.
In reality now it'll be either about the willingness of the various government agencies to commit financially to this exercise under the extreme financial situation and that of the state's and national economy as a whole.
It'll be about the priorities therein.
And that's why Oscar Goodman in Vegas is chompin' at the bit for the team to up and move. Should they be willing to do that then you won't for one minute be able to count the tens of millions of dollars that'll be thrown at Sternberg and Friedman.

As for the upcoming series against my beloved Marlins . Well let's just say that there's some unfinished business between these two teams.
It'll be an intriguing and competitive series I believe. And then the Rays'll then have to play the Red Sox. What more could any Rays' fan be wishing for at this juncture ?

bosox61 Timely hitting and defensive plays were the things that led to the Marlins' demise against the Rays.
But really what was so demoralizing was the putrid attendance at the game. It'd barely registered a blip on a seismograph. That in essence is now what's becoming a sad indictment when it comes to the support of both franchises within the state.
See my latest post titled Sense And Sensibility ...If We Build It They Will Come ..Not So Fast ... ! I'll look forward to reading your comments as and when you're ready.
Evan Longoria I think should be picked to play in the all-star game. The Rays started all of this when he began playing everday and when he felt comfortable at 3rd.
I can remember the opposition that occurred before the city of St. Pete and the area governments built the Trop. History repeats itself!
B.J. Upton and Aki along with Garza and Wheeler should be the other Rays reps. at the all-star game.
Maddon has done a nice job of moving his players around the scorecard/lineup. It seems to have kept everyone relatively fresh. His patience with all of the young players at times seems almost lax which might hurt the team down the stretch if he doesn't react more quickly to sticky situations in the second half. He lets his pitchers keep pitching when they need to be relieved sometimes.
Its all about baseball! Big Leagues, Minors, College, HS or Little League. I seem to be happiest when I'm watching it in one form or another.
As a "long-in-the- tooth" Red Sox fan I have buried many familly members who only got to see my beloved Sox get close. The adjustment in going from a fatalist to a believer concerning the Sox has not been easy for me. I think I may have behaved badly as a fan during this years championship season. It's like learning to write left-handed when you have been right-handed all your life. I follow the Patriots, Boston College Football and college basketball. There is only a little bit of baseball when those sports play.
I only care about the game. If it happens outside the stadium, it is not my business. a>
