Wow, has money changed this sport for the worst. As a life long fan, and sometime participant it really seems like the racing is secondary to everything else these days. Nascar has prostituted itself into a joke, from one weekend to the next they have no idea what they are doing. If you have enough money you can buy drivers, buy points, ruin guys careers, and still sit in New York at the end of the year like nothing ever happened and act like you actually won the award they just gave you. There are a few older drivers left that still have the principles that Nascar was founded on, but they are few and far between. The Mark Martins, Marlins, the Petty's, they know whats up. They can remember when your wrenches meant as much as your wallet. Sure big business has brought good changes to the sport, more T.V exposure, more advertising , more fans, more money for the drivers. But it's also brought multi cars teams so we the fans get to hear drivers squabble over who can't pass who, who is number one, who gets the better motors and crews. There is an old saying, "Bigger isn't always better". Maybe Mike Helton and the boys better step back and look at what they have created. Maybe they better wonder if what they have created can be controlled like the old sport it once was, and if not, they better fix it fast. There was no way the computer age was ever going to fail. Now drive through the Silicon Valley area outside of San Fransisco now and look at the deserted high rise buildings and vacant parking lots, of companies that used to give away cars as bonus's to their employees. They created a monster that soon consumed itself, and disappeared. Is Nascar headed that way, I doubt it,not at this time, but remember we learn from the past, and we learn from ours, and others mistakes. If not, then history serves us not. Be Cool, Just a few thoughts from the BOBDOT
The problem with Silicone Valley is all the jobs went overseas for cheaper labor.. Still all about money..
NASCAR is a big business, Nothing more, Nothing less. It provides a service based on fan demand but is slow to respond to the needed changes just as with any big business. It is evolving with in it self. With trial and error it will survive. No other operation can match the enormous and complex infrastructure now built around NASCAR.
Sadly I have to agree, Nascar is big business, and we need to remember that these guys are here to make money, plain and simple. But isn't it funny we all admit that, but yet we cry when a driver leaves a team or a sponsor..ie: Dale Junior.Guess we will just have to out live the generations that have forgotten family and work values..
Great blog. You make some great points here. I can see a day in which NASCAR actually does consume itself. And at the current rate that day might not be that far off.
I agree that NASCAR needs to take a step back and re-examine what is happening in the sport today. After all we already have examples of motorsports that did consume itself. The Indy-Champ Car breakup comes to mind.
I am sure that before Champ Car split, it thought it had the open wheel motorsports locked up tight. But Indy came along and nothing has been right with either series since.
So NASCAR take a lesson from the Champ Car Series. And don't allow the same thing to happen to you, that happened to Champ Car. It isn't too late yet. But you better not wait too long, time is ticking by fast. You still have time to fix this, but time is running out.
Bob: In the sporting circles and NASCAR, it is all about money. Gimme Gimme more more. Family values, work values, and ethics left that realm decades ago. It is all about the me only generation now..
TSFANPC, I COULD NOT AGREE MORE...UNFORTUNATLY, I LIKE BOTH THE INDY AND THE CHAMP CAR SERIES. I THINK IT IS TIME. NASCAR HAS THE "GOD HEAD IMAGE"
AND HAS HAD IT FOR TO LONG.
NASCAR HAS BEEN WRONG MANY TIMES BEFORE. BUT THE ROBBIE GORDON INCIDENT TOPS THEM ALL...THE YELLOW FLAG WAS WAVING WHEN GORDON WAS SPUN OUT. HE SHOULD HAVE RESTARTED FIRST. NASCAR MADE SOME VERY BAD DECISIONS....EVEN TO THE POINT OF SUSPENDING THE DRIVER AND A FINE BECAUSE OF "THEIR" INCOMPETENCE. FAN OR NOT, ROBBY GORDON WAS CORRECT IN HIS ACTIONS. NASCAR WAS TOTALLY WRONG.
I WOULD LOVE TO SEE THE TOP 6 TEAMS LEAVE NASCAR AND START A NEW SERIES. WOULD HAVE TO BE BETTER THAN NASCAR IS NOW...I WAS BORN IN 1945, WENT TO THE 3RD SOUTHERN 500 AND HAVE BEEN A FAN SINCE.
NASCAR TODAY DOES NOT REPRESENT STOCK CAR RACING ANYMORE. I AM READY TO SEE SOMETHING NEW.
