Darren McCarty is making his way back into the NHL. The former Wing and most recently Calgary Flame forward had been injured and out of hockey. Finally back healthy McCarty played in the IHL a team co-owned by Red Wings center Kris Draper, McCarty's former Grind Line linemate. He signed with the Flint Generals.
In Flint it sparked attendance and sold out games. The Generals have a good team but have not drawn very good crowds all season, until McCarty arrived.
Then he got a minor league pro tryout with the Grand Rapids Griffins, the minor league affiliate of the Red Wings.
GM Ken Holland told Anshar Khan on Mlive.com "there are three options to signing McCarty: Put him on the NHL roster immediately and keep him there, send him back to Grand Rapids on a two-week conditioning stint, or sign him and send him to the Griffins indefinitely. In order to send him to the minors, he would need to clear waivers, unless it's just for a two-week conditioning stint.
"The intention is to eventually get him up here," Holland said. "In my mind, he's not ready to be put on an NHL roster. I don't think Darren is quite there, conditioning-wise. He's got to lose some weight."
Fans in Detroit will go crazy if he gets brought in. He was a fan favorite for 11 years in Hockeytown and would give the Wings a spark.
