Darren McCarty is making his way back into the NHL. The former Wing and most recently Calgary Flame forward had been injured and out of hockey. Finally back healthy McCarty played in the IHL a team co-owned by Red Wings center Kris Draper, McCarty's former Grind Line linemate. He signed with the Flint Generals.
In Flint it sparked attendance and sold out games. The Generals have a good team but have not drawn very good crowds all season, until McCarty arrived.
Then he got a minor league pro tryout with the Grand Rapids Griffins, the minor league affiliate of the Red Wings.
GM Ken Holland told Anshar Khan on Mlive.com "there are three options to signing McCarty: Put him on the NHL roster immediately and keep him there, send him back to Grand Rapids on a two-week conditioning stint, or sign him and send him to the Griffins indefinitely. In order to send him to the minors, he would need to clear waivers, unless it's just for a two-week conditioning stint.
"The intention is to eventually get him up here," Holland said. "In my mind, he's not ready to be put on an NHL roster. I don't think Darren is quite there, conditioning-wise. He's got to lose some weight."
Fans in Detroit will go crazy if he gets brought in. He was a fan favorite for 11 years in Hockeytown and would give the Wings a spark.
Hey Bob...It's the former "FlyingPig" checking in with you. I'm excited to see D-MAC back wearing the winged wheel. He is a bruising forward who can mix it up and he has good hands around the net. It will be nice to have him when the playoffs roll around.

Everyone there is a former blogger from this site who has been run off or banned. I think you'd like it there.
Wonderful News! Ken Holland is right, Mac himself said that he is not ready (conditioning-wise) for the NHL. But, way to go, Wings GM and Management to give a fellow a second chance. I think when Mac is back to NHL form, he's going to be better than even he expects.
A very sinple commit,,,BRING MAC BACK WINGS
WE LOVE HIM AND WE MISS HIM RESTART THE GRIND LINE
GOOOD LUCK MAC, THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DONE FOR THE FANS AND FOR THE DETROIT AREA.

He was always a heavy hitter who could come through with a clutch goal here and there. It would be great to see him on the ice again. When I think of McCarty, I'm always reminded of the game against Colorado where he got his revenge on Lemieux for the Draper hit. That was a fun one to watch.
It's hard to argue with any move that Holland makes, but I wonder how much left in the tank McCarty can have and what is the upside for a 35 year old wing that hasn't exactly lit the lamp in recent years. Personally, if they were to pick up any old, ex Wing I'd prefer Sergei Federov.
That being said, anyone who pummels Claude "The Coward" Lemieux will always be welcomed in one form or another.
