10. Ray Bourque won the Stanley Cup.........In Colorado. This was a media thing to promote hockey wasn’t it? Maybe I am biased because I am in Hockeytown. Although I was happy for Joe Sakic. But for Bourque to win a cup anywhere but Boston was very empty in feeling.
9. Army vs. Navy every year. Maybe if someone put a highlight or three together before the week of the game the rest of the nation would know a little bit about the actual game. If it is going to be a national TV game how about a little lead in on it.
8. The Pro Bowl from Hawaii is the most anticlimactic sporting events of the year. Most players that played in the Super Bowl get sudden injuries and don’t play in it. Every player on the field just wants to enjoy the off-season with out being injured. Let them do it by not even playing the game and just name the Pro Bowlers like they do in college as the All-Americans.
7. Any Mike Tyson fight ever. He made millions per minute with some of the "joke-of-the-day" type fights with nobodies like Peter McNeely and 90 second fights against Leon Spinx. For the money per pay-per-view Tyson should have had to fight at least four fighters in a row with a minimum of 3 full rounds fought. That wasn’t a problem late in his career. Going to jail was very detrimental to his career.
6. Billy Jean King defeated Bobby Riggs in a battle of the sexes match in 1973 in tennis. The match was held in front of a record audience at the Houston Astrodome. Had Bobby Riggs been a top ranked player in at least the top 10,000 in the world the match would have been ok. Billy Jean King was the best woman tennis player in the world. Bobby Riggs was just the hype machine used to promote tennis. Tennis just happens to be one of the few sports and really the only womens sport that compete with the male counterpart in revenue.
5. Roger Bannister breaking the four minute mile in 1954 is a moment ranked in the top ten as a great sports moment. If this happened in 2008 this would be the next doping scandal of the next 3-4 years. Guilty or innocent, too many athletes have lied and been caught to get treated fairly and individually in media today. Regarding Bannister it is just running really fast, lets not make this more than it was.
4. BCS Title Game every year just feels hollow. Letting people who don’t play football decide who will, is just wrong. Let the teams play it out in a small playoff of 8 teams. Let them settle it on the field. Divisions 2 and 3 NCAA football have playoffs. Have they ever looked at the money the college basketball March Madness tournament rakes in each year? It is Billions with a capital B! What do you think that would be in football? That’s right Kajillions with a capital K!
3. The Indianapolis 500 race is the only open wheel race most sports fans even hear about during the racing season. With all the hype the race gets ever year, can you name last years winner? What about 2006?
2. The Heisman Trophy Award and ceremony. It is getting out of hand. Way too much is being made of the award. How many of these great college football players have ever done anything after winning the award. They are very few and far between. Besides, almost half of the time many think that the wrong player won. Why not put all the awards on one show from college football.
1.The Daytona 500 is called the Super Bowl of Nascar, only it is at the beginning of the season? Not even close! They have more than one race at the track every year as well. The night race at mid-season is better esthetically. The cars look way better at night. Does the Daytona 500 get you more points for the Nextel Cup Series? Does it win the Championship in the first week of the season? How many teams are in it again? Well it seams it is nothing at all and actually the opposite of the Super Bowl! It may be the most exciting race of the year because it is opening weekend. It is my favorite track and the only one I have ever been on and in the pit area. However it is not the Super Bowl of anything.
9. Army vs. Navy totally blows.
8. To make the Pro Bowl mean something, the losing team should have to put on cheerleader outfits and dance for ten minutes after the game. That kind of humiliation might also make them try a little.
5. There was even an ESPN movie made about Bannister. That ranks up there with Step Up 2 as completely unnecessary movies.
4. Totally agree on the playoff idea for college football.
3 and 1. I have never watched a Nascar event, besides the last couple laps or so of a couple races. It's too damn boring.
It is real easy to look back from today's prospective and downplay something, like breaking the 4 minute mile. However, since it had never been done and some people at the time though it never would be, yes, it was a big thing. It is kind of like the first triple jump in ice skating. That was a BIG deal. It just seems routine today. The first time something is done will always be a big thing. That is the essence of sports records.
I agree on the pro bowl, and I would include all the All Star games except perhaps baseball's, since they have tied the WS home field advantage to it, which I think is stupid. Home field should be earned by the team, not by the league. These games are hardly watchable. The NBA is a joke. There is hardly any defense played and it is just an exchange of scoring.
The only value to the Billy Jean King match was that it focused attention on women's sports. At the time the prevailing opinion was that any decent male player in any sport could beat ANY woman no matter how good she was. Billy Jean disproved that. As hokey as it seems now, you have to take into account the mind set of the day.
I definitely agree about the BCS game, but not for the reason you gave. If the teams were voted on by the coaches and players, you would have just as many arguments about whether the right teams were chosen. I wish for a playoff also, but even with your suggestion, those who do not get picked in the 8 are going to be unhappy. I am afraid there is just no solution to the problem. There are just too many teams, and too few spots.
i would hate to say!!! why??? everyone has a favorite sports event!! no matter how someone else hates it!!! but i do agree the army navy game is always for me a yawnnnnner!!!!
I agree that all of Tyson's post-prison fights were completely over-hyped, but to say any fight EVER? There is a reason why his fights were highly anticipated when he got out of prison--it was because he was the most exciting heavyweight of our generation, and when he still had his trainer, and had not yet been arrested, he was sick. I saw clips of those days recently, and trust me he was a beast. I agree with everything else though, good post.
What about the World Series of Poker? Guys get famous and rich over gambling and they air it on ESPN. Who cares, I like playing poker but geez it is not ESPN worthy.
fadeaway... i just thought of another sport?? on the tube a few months ago or mmaybe a year ago..,anyway paper sissors or rock was being played rember that where you try to cover th rock or smash the rock eeeee gads now that was reall sports entertainment!!!!!
Nice work. You forgot one point about the "battle of the sexes" lol
It seems to be conveniently left out, right along with the fact that Riggs was so over it was pathetic. Who played doubles rules and who played singles? Not that the width of the court is important in tennis or anything.
The one thing I will give BJ King though is, way to recognize that Riggs was an i..d..i..o..t. I think Riggs thought that playing Billie Jean was the equivilant of Bea Arthur lacing them up and deciding to play. Oops, your bad Bobby.
A note to Fox. You bleep the word #### but you let some interacial dating website bone heads spam the blogs non stop?
I'm sure glad the person over seeing the blogs isn't a diploma mill graduate.

I wanna puke every time I see that STUPID Willis Reed story.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, the guy was inspiring for showing up to play while injured, but if this would have happened anywhere else but New York, it would never have been made a big deal spanning the ages.
It is SO OVERRATED.
Surely Jordan's playoff performance with the flu and a hundred other performance are more noteworthy than this.
bob, bob, bob...you've been spared the ire of most of the NASCAR bloggers on here because non of us would ever CONSIDER you putting the Daytona 500 on this list! but FIRST??! Really?!?!
Just because the analogy to the Superbowl doesn't make sense doesnt mean its overrated. Its one of the best races of the year...now you might have had a point if you talked about Pocono or many of the other less dramatic tedious races in our season but the 500 is not overrated. Bad analogy maybe.
Indy and Daytona???? Watch the race Sunday and look at all of the people in the stands. Its one of the largest attended sporting event in the world. Agree with the rest and I too would include all allstar games.
Okay...what #### woul;d dub the Daytona 500 as THE most boring and overrated sporting event, ever? Most assuredly, it must be someone who has never even attended even a single NASCAR event, let alone the granddaddy of all the superspeedway races. And the Indy 500? What kind of #### are you...really? They name streets after you....Mo...Ron! Hey, why not include the Super Bowl, then? There have only been a couple of them that have lived up to their hype. Now, if you were throwing in the NBA Championship, the Stanley Cup and a few other really overrated events, I'd be with you. But, for you to put two of the highest rated and attended sporting events of the year in the top five, well, its obvious you're just a #### who doesn't know a damn thing about sports. Period. Look...go back to college and pay attention this time. Less beer, more coherent television. Sheesh!

I like to watch race cars go around and around and around in circles but I really would like to watch road racing more. The other stuff I don't know any thing about.
Daytona#1 ? Theres more to it than driving in a circle to the left. 43 cars, three wide going as fast as small aircraft. There must be some reason every driver on the circuit wants to win this race more than any other race.
I have to agree on the BCS. Playoffs would be great!
Iambham- it is overrated. Read the reasoning over again.
Do they win the Nextel Cup Championship because they win at Daytona? It is opening weekend, that is all! Yes Daytona is a big race, but it doesnt get anyone more points than any other race!
Another racing fan checking in here to disagree with you. Don't follow the other sports you mentioned, but I dont think you've ever attended either Indy or Daytona in person. Indy 500 is the biggest single day sporting event (most attended) in the US each year. I have attended it every year since 1986...and the excitement is there. Just ask Dario Franchitti who won last year in the rain shortened event.
And Daytona...it's deserving of ALL the hype you read. If you're not a NASCAR fan, you probably dont get it. But if you ever get a chance to attend an event...you just may change your perspective on this.
been to both tracks BTW. I took the tour at Daytona going to the winners circle and where Earnhardt's crash happened, around the track and into the pits.
I am a Nascar fan, just becaue I think the Daytona 500 is overrated doesnt mean I am not a fan or have ever been to or seen a race. I have also been to 2 races at MIS (Michigan International Speedway)both open wheel and Nascar.
Nice job. However, I have to agree with those who don't think the 4:00 mile should be on there. First of all, they didn't have the doping products then that they do now. Second, it's been a long time since that happened and the record is only around 15 seconds lower. Most records in the drug filled world of track and field have been beaten worse than that. Finally, I would have to drive a car to go that fast. I can't imagine running that fast.
the only reason it made the list (4 min mile) is because he had beaten his own record so many times that it seems anticlimatic because he was only beating his record by small fractions until he finally did it. And it was just running fast
The Daytona 500 is a huge race.It is the Super Bowl of Nascar due to the fact it is the first race of a brand new season.Frist points race, fresh start for alot of cars old and new and way too much history involved in this place to even get stated in.Alot of big names in this motorsport won this race and alot of drivers it is the only race they have ever won.Sorry man, don't agree on this one.
