NFL Tweak This!
Aug 25, 2007 | 1:01AM | report this
It comes up every year in the NFL that there are too many preseason games.  NFL owners won't scratch the games because of revenue earned by each game.

Players hold out, even rookies, for more guaranteed money.  It happens every year.

Monday Night Football has some real duds for games.  every now and then there is a good game that may actually mean something, but not very often.

With so many players getting injured and players put on injured reserve, it would be nice if those teams didn't have to bring in guys off the street to play and possibly start.

Here are some changes that not only should be made but could be made.

1. Shorten preseason down to 2-3 games.  You would have less players getting hurt and besides the guys are professionals, do they really need a month and a half of practices and exhibition games to get ready?  Teams like to use these extra games to evaluate talent and see who will make the team.  However you will see in my third point why that won't matter.

2.  guaranteed contracts in the NFL is a must.  These players get injured or old and they just cut them with little repercussion.  There is absolutely zero loyalty to players, it is hard to get it back when it isn't given.  This would also hold more teams fiscally responsible for players they sign.

3.  Extend rosters from 53 man rosters to 60.  Teams can only have 46 active for games and with an expanded roster they could have their full 53 man roster.  This would create more jobs as well.

4.  Monday Night Football needs an upgrade of games.  We really don't want to see the same teams ran out there as well.  The NFL needs to let the MNF team select better match-ups closer to game weeks.

Tough to argue these changes.

1. I think the issue isn't reducing the # of games, but rather the ticket prices. Market them as 2nd-4th stringers and call a #### a ####. Truthfully these games can be rather exciting because a 2nd string can roll up a 21-7 lead then the scrubs blow it or whatever. I have seen great exhibition games in the past. It's the exception of course.

3. I have clamored for this and it makes a ton of sense. Having guys inactive is stupid.

4. MNF is no longer appointment television so who cares? I think minimilization could be the answer. They keep f'ing with the announcers, cameras, telestrators(?) and graphics when they should just stick to covering the football straight up.

Good post.

1. I agree, three games I think would be good. Two to kind of let the starters get back into the swing of things and one to let all the "bubble" players have a shot.

2. This I disagree with. Teams can't cut an injured player outright (notice Jerome Bettis admitting to faking an injury so he wouldn't be cut), they have to negotiate a deal. I do think it should be modified so that cut players get more of their contract, however, and I also feel rookies should receive mandatory contracts based on the pick.

Also, in a sport with so many injuries you could have contracts clogging up cap-space and handicapping teams for years if they were guaranteed. A new system is needed to get rid of holdouts and give the players some more comfort but I think guaranteed contracts are not the answer.

3. I like this. Many times if a team suffers multiple injuries at the same position they have to scrammble to hire somebody with "some" experience at the position. It hurts teams and the quality of the game.

4. Seriously! Monday Night Football used to mean something, I understand they put Sunday Night Football in the exaulted space but MNF should still get quality games.

Keep up the good work.

Good post. These changes would make the NFL that much better for the fans and players alike. Especially Monday Night Football lol. Maybe you should be commisioner of the league.
