Never Trust a Man With Two First Plural Names!
Apr 20, 2007 | 10:16PM | report this
This is one of those "my dad always told me" type deals where the Detroit Lions have the number two pick in the 2007 NFL Draft.  The Lions are very interested in defensive end Gaines Adams from Clemson.  So based on the latter advice the Lions need to draft anyone else.

Actually they are likely to take Adams.  The Lions just don't want to select him number two overall.  They would much rather draft him 4th or later.  This is for two reasons.

First the Lions don't want to pay him number two money when they don't have to.  If they trade down he is likely to be on the board as late as the number eight pick.

The second thing this does is gets the Lions more draft picks.  The Lions already have the first two hours reserved for the begining of round five.  The Lions have four picks in the fifth round.

The Lions also need the Raiders to draft JaMarcus Russell so that Calvin Johnson is available.  Tampa Bay and Atlanta bot want CJ and the Lions will be a happy suitor to their bids.

WHY NOT TRADE DOWN? NEW ENGLAND HAS 2 FIRST RD. PICKS..#24/#28....(24)CB-AARON ROSS OR CHRIS HOUSTON AND(28)OL-BLALOCK OR GRUBBS. NEW ENGLAND COULD FINALLY GET A WR- CALVIN JOHNSON FOR TOM BRADY!!! QB SHOULD NOT BE A PRIORITY ESPECIALLY AFTER JON KITNA THREW FOR 4200 YDS. LAST YR. DO NOT COUNT ON MIKE MARTZ STAYING PUT IN ORDER TO DEVELOP A BRADY QUINN, BUT IF YOU MUST HAVE A QB..YOUR 2ND RD. PICK (34)- DREW STANTON. REMEMBER, YOU GUYS AVERAGED A MERE 79 YDS. RUSHING A GAME...UNACCEPTABLE!! 3RD RD.-DE-RAY MCDONALD OR TIM CROWDER...MIDDLE LB,TE,WR-NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED IN THE FOLLOWING RDS. KEEP IN MIND AL WILSON IS A FREE AGENT... THE LATER RDS. IN THIS DRAFT HAVE VALUE ESPECIALLY AT WR- YOMON FIGURES, 4.3...JOEL FILANI 6'3, 216...ROY HALL 6'2, 229,4.41-NEVER GOT CHANCE AT OSU. HOPEFULLY THE LIONS WILL SURPRISE U GUYS AND HAVE A SOLID DRAFT THIS YR. GAINES ADAMS/BRADY QUINN ARE NOT THE ANSWER!!!

Here I thought you were going to give me examples of busts with two plural first names or at least criminals. Hell, something.

Detroit will get screwed because in the pit of my stomach I am feeling Calvin Johnson. Al never takes a QB just like he never wears anything but a jumpsuit.

New England will not trade up to #2 in the draft. It will take far, far more than the #24 and #28 picks to pry Detroit to move that far down the board.

I agree, the Raiders taking Russell would be a dream scenario if the Lions really want Adams. Possibly trading down two spots and still getting the guy you want? Priceless.

As far as who the Lions should take, I would think Joe Thomas would be a good fit. The running game for the Lions was anemic last season, an upgrade on the offensive line could certainly help that matter.

Hey Bob...Lots of rumors surrounding the Lions trading down with Tampa Bay...but you are right. It all comes down to the raiders taking Russell.
