Pavel Datsyuk is having his best season this year and has stepped up big time in the absence of teammate and linemate Henrik Zetterberg. Pavel could have become a free-agent this off season but Red WingsGeneral manager Ken Holland decided to get it done now. He got it done by inking Datsyuk to a seven-year, $46.9 million contract.
Having inked Datsyuk they also clinched the Central Division in Chicago last night. They lost in a shoot out but still gained the point needed to clinch. They were without Dominik Hasek, Nicklas Lidstrom, and Zetterberg. The wings also lost newly acquired and fresh off a back injury Todd Bertuzzi to a strained neck injury when he collided with Chris Osgood in the games first period.
Maybe next year the Nashville Predators will win the division but they still have a lot to learn over the long marathon of a full regular season. They could have won the division this year but were dominated by the Wings. The two are likely to meet in the playoffs this season where it really counts.
