Matt Millen has way too many options and franchise changing decisions coming up in the next few months to get this right or dead wrong. They have the number 2 pick in the draft and have been linkt to rumors that would bring Simeon Rice to Detroit if he is cut by Tampa or traded. He still has one year remaining on his contract with Tampa that is worth $7.25 million.
All the jokes about Millen are the same. Is he gonna take another WR in the top ten? Will he take another QB? Although of Millen's last seven first round picks, five of them are still on the team. Mike Williams, Roy Williams, Kevin Jones, "Hurtin" Ernie Sims and Jeff Backus all played and are still under contract. The Lions also finished with a whopping 18 players on IR. So the next few months are going to be critical in the lions future. The sad thing to me is that Matt Millen is going to be the one calling the shots. If at least one guy they bring in, make it Marinelli's guy Simeon Rice and some how get rid of Kalimbust Edwards. And hey Lions, how about we cut down on the number of coachs driving nude through Tim Hortons drive through as well. What was he (Joe Cullen D-line coach) thinking anyway? Maybe he just didn't have a place to put his bagels and he was just trying to be more efficient.
What to do with the draft pick though? They could go with the quarterback Oakland doesn't take either Brady Quinn or Jamarcus Russell. They could go with Joe Thomas, the tackle from Wisconsin. Chris Mortenson even said they may take Alan Branch the DT from Michigan. He was a very good DT for Michigan, but not at number two in the draft. Calvin Johnson the WR from Georgia Tech is there also. To me this has trade this pick please written all over it. We will see what happens. It is still very far away and the coin flip for the 3rd and 4th over pick still hasn't even taken place.
I believe the LIONS should take Either Alan Branch(DT)from michign, or Gaines Adams(DE)From Clemson in the first round. Select Kevin Kolb(QB) from Houston in the second round. There's alot of top defensive players in the draft and the Lions were horrible on defense.
The Lions need to draw up a very good defense so their offense does'nt have to do so much, the Lions have the best offense in the NFC North-They need a defense to compliment that.
Fire Millen if he drafts Calvin Johnson(WR)>

Anyone that has watched the Lions over the past 10 years...let alone the past 40 knows that the Lions never seem to get it right on the line. Sure, they've had an Alex Karas and a Bubba Baker and Lomas Brown. If the Lions do not shore up the line on BOTH sides of the ball, they could draft the best receiver, running back, quarterback, etc...and it's not going to matter. They have to protect THEIR quarterback, and make room for their running back...AND...they need to pressure the opposing quarterback and runningbacks. PERIOD!!!
Am I the only person out there to wonder exactly what Matt Millen has on the Fords? I think it must be something pretty big,say possibly involving animals, for the Fords to keep Millen for this long. Granted the Fords are preoccupied with saving Ford Motor Company, but how about working on saving the Lions? Every Lions fan is waiting to see how Millen will mess this opportunity up.
A QB, RB, or WR is the least of their problems. They should figure out who is likely to be the second pick, and find out which team wants that guy the most. Make some sort of trade, most likely to add extra picks late in the first round...or maybe in the second. Then draft LINEMEN! Lots of linemen, both sides of the ball. Heck, see if a team will trade a talented lineman to you.
They consistently lose the battle at the line of scrimmage. No matter what kind of team you have, that's where success begins.
Look at how the Jets did with their draft picks last year.
Shooter you are exactly right. I thought these guys already knew that you win in the trenches, yet they havent really done anything with them in some time. Whenever they bring any sort of lineman in, they never play because of injuries
You make an interesting statement and it is one I have probably made in the past ... "but not at #2 in the draft".
I think a lot of GMs get stuck in this mindset and wind up making the wrong choice because of it. The Bills are an example of a team that said "F it" and took Whitner when the Raiders got Huff in the last draft.
The Lions should get the guy who will help them the most 2-3 years down the line. It is obvious they are not ready to compete right now. The OT from Wisconsin would be a good choice because their offense is the bread & butter. Mike Williams could still turn his fortunes around to form a nice duo with Roy. I heard they are losing faith in Kevin Jones, but it isn't wise to close the book on him either.
Get a good line going and everything else will fall into place. If anything, deal out of the #2 to a team that really wants a guy sitting there. More picks is always better. Just like the Chargers did getting Rivers, Merriman & Kaeding for Eli.
