Tigers win! A's fire Macha, Yankees should follow suit
Oct 17, 2006 | 7:28PM | report this
photo by ME! click to enlarge In a dramatic swing Magglio got the Tigers into the World Series and the A's skipper gets canned.  Now I know most think that getting a team into the playoffs should be good enough.  But it isn't.  Look at the Yankees nearly firing Joe Torre after have the best record in the league.  However both should have been fired.  And hear is why.

1.  Joe Torre should have been fired for losing to the Tigers because he had the best hitting line up we may ever see in our lifetime.  That line up looked like one of a kid playing in season mode on MLB 06' on X Box.  If you can't figure out a way to get those guys to hit, you have to go.

2.  Torre and Macha both decided to just sit back and watch their respective teams get their #### handed to them by the Tigers by not EVER being aggressive.  As a Tigers fan I was shocked neither team bunted or stole a base in any game.  Without them doing either of those things you know they never once tried a hit and run.

3.  They didn't show any confidence in certain players that they would step up.  Instead Torre hit A-Rod 8th in a game and Macha just let Frank Thomas slump his way through and abismal series.

Out of both American League series the Tigers won, only one player seamed to even show up and try and that is Milton Bradley.  He is the guy no one wanted because he is a cancer in the dugout.  Maybe he doesn't like losing or being around players that sit back and don't ever show any emotion.  Without emotions there can be no momentum, and I know you saw the Tigers players showing emotion.

Bob., ....... Billy Beane supposedly feels that there's a disconnect between Macha and the players. But I beg to differ as I felt that the disconnect was between the A's and the fact that they didn't know how to deal with the Tigers' pitching. Always swinging for the fences rather than playing some small ball when it was called for. The blame shouldn't only be Macha's as there'a a team sitting back at home in the Bay area that could've gone further if they had really put forth an effort.

The Yankees weren't about to get rid of Torre knowing full well that a new hiree as well as Torre's salary would've cost the Yankees an additional $11 to $12m for 2007. So they decided upon retaining him for one more year. Should he then fail then we know Cashman , Steinbrenner and Swindal will cut Torre loose. Whoever his replacement will be have a tumultuous legacy to live up to.

Don Mattingly will take over I believe, next year.

No one should blame A Rod either, they were good before he got their and they will be good when he is gone

And for the A's, small ball is the name of the game in the playoffs, and they didnt even try to play it. Now they are playing with small balls on the golf course now

I can't blame them for not trying to steal on Pudge. that is almost as hard as it was to steal on Johnny Bench. But you have to at least give it a shot.

Bob .............. Piniella gets hired by the Cubs and then apathy sets in as there's now talk about them acquiring A-Rod. Please they really need to get a life as A-Rod won't be going anywhere, anythime soon. There's more chance of Michelle Wie losing her virginity before A-Rod gets traded to the Cubs, as they've got very little to offer the Yankees in return.

It looks as if the Mets could've pi$$ed away their season against the Cardinals as they're now in the driving seat. Should they close out the series against the Mets ? Then someone's head will be on the chopping block. A highly touted even thought they lost Pedro and El Duque. They should've had enough ammunition to see off the Cardinals but instead are looking down the barrel of a sawn off shotgun with both barrels locked between their eyes.

Good post bob, but the A's attempted to hit and run many times in the series...they were actually successful in game four in the first inning and it led to a run.

I do agree with you though that they didn't run against the Tigers. I can understand when Rogers is on the mound, but you have to be able to run on Bonderman. Also, the Yankees managed 3 hits and never once squared to bunt in game 4 when they couldn't TOUCH Bonderman.

Flying Pig ...... The A's are sorely paying for their inaction over the trade deadline as they could've retooled somewhat and added the pieces that were necessary to make the team more competitive. That being said the way the Tigers had been playing it would've been extremely hard to beat them on any given situation.

The A's should fire Torre and acquire A-Rod

A-Rod is easy. Who is willing to take on 25 million in salary? The bigger the portion the Yankees will eat of it - the better the player the will get in return.

bob ...... You for one know that the A's won't trade for A-Rod and still be liable for that large part of his salary that's remaining. Billy Beane if he's of the opinion that they can afford to spend big then it shouldn't be on the likes of A-Rod. They need to get young hungry players not fat cats whose pockets are loaded down with money. Which is what A-Rod is fast becoming.

of coarse I was joking about the A's acquiring A-Rod

Also the Rangers will be paying 8 Mill this year of that Salary. Would he then get checks from 3 teams if he gets traded?

bob , That's the biggest joke of this whole situation of it all. One team pays for the opulence of A-Rod's supposed display be it good, bad or indifferent. It's a joke and that's solely because of the financial extravagances of baseball's financial srtucturing.
