Yankees, Mariners looking to recoup on bad past trades
Jul 05, 2006 | 8:57AM | report this
This seasons trade deadline in Major League Baseball will have yet again, several big names trading uniforms.  One move I always hate to see is when any player gets traded during the All-Star break from his team.  The Royals Mark Redman may be that guy this season, a player who has seen more locker rooms than Lisa Guerrero has given her phone number out in.

The Yankees and Mariners are just two teams of many looking to make a change for the better before the trade deadline.  The fact that the Yankees make more moves than anyone is the reason why any team that trades with them should make sure they aren't giving the Yankees anyone.  If the Yanks had stood pat on many occasions they would't be looking to add $12 - $15 million in payroll again this season just to finish second to the Red Sox.   The Yankees have been rumored to be trying to acquire Washington's Alfonso Soriano and José Guillen, Milwaukee's Carlos Lee, and Philadelphia's Bobby Abreu.  The move the Yankees need to make is getting healthy.  Gary Sheffield and Hideki Matsui are on the 15 day DL along with second baseman Robinson Cano and pitcher Carl Pavano.  That is four players they will have back but may not be able to contribute in time to make the playoffs.  It may be time for the Yankees to actually keep some of their prospects and see them come to fruition in the big leagues.   If they kept players longer it may them not the White Sox enjoying a 17 game winning streak by Jose Contreras.  They traded Contreras for Estoban Loaiza WITH CASH to the White Sox and it was also right after his family got here from Cuba.

The Seattle Mariners are trying to recoup a pitcher this season in a deadline trade.  They have been rumored to be looking for a starting pitcher.  It is kind of funny since just two seasons ago it was them who traded Freddy Garcia with Ben Davis to the White Sox for Jeremy Reed, Miguel Olivo, and Michael Morse.  It may be Karma but it is just aother case of a team making a move when they had zero patience and zero thought of actually being a contender in another year or two.  They should only be so lucky to get a pitcher like him back in the fold after botching that trade so badly.

unlike other years, the injuries are actually a big part of the reason the yankees are looking to add through trades. matsui may not be 100% until who knows when, if at all before the season is ovre. as for sheffield, i wonder if he didnt opt for surgery because he was pi$$ed at the talk of not being offered a new deal after the season is over. either way, he wont be back until september sometime. that's 2 outfielders out indefinitely. if i were them, i'd be looking for help too. i just hope it's not carlos lee they end up trading for.

as for the mariners, how many times have they swapped players with the yankees? as much as those teams seem to hate each other, they sure trade back and forth alot.

hey Cuz, you may be right they do need an outfielder and it may be Lee they get for the value of what it will take to get him. With all the Injuries maybe this year they should just try to develop with in and see exactly what they have in depth. A shot at the World Series this year may not be worth as much as a shot for the next 2 to 3 seasons.

Also which team will acquire Jeff Nelson this year? I guess this year neither team can actually really trade for him :)

i'm sure 1 or the other would be happy to sign him, then turn around and trade him right away....

that's a smart plan about the yankees working in their young players, especially those in the minors who are close to MLB talent-wise. of course we know that will never happen. steinbrenner's got way too much money invested in everybody...those on the field as well as those who are injured...to just be satisfied with developing their own farm system guys.

bob260505, The Yankees' problems are always magnified many times over , come the All Star Break. Fortunately they've got the cash to throw at the problem. But they can't keep on doing that for much longer. Not only that, they have a tendency to strip the cupboard bare of their farm system. With the return of Sheffield and Matsui, they should be in a good position. My fear is that should Johnson or Mussina get injured then their season would be over. The rest of that pitching staff is shaky to say the least.

My knowledge of the Mariners is not that great, but I have to wonder what management is doing with that team. They've rapidly regressed over the past 5 years and show no signs of remedying the problems that they face. I wonder how long before Ichiro demands a trade? He can't be happy at the prospect of playing for a team that lacks ambition and determination.

Tophatal - Seattle is 3 games out of first but 2 games under .500 and it is all the moves they have made that have hurt them. Thisd is why I think the Cubs should not trade Wood and Prior. Next year if they were better would be looking to trade for a starter just like the M's.

The Detroit Tigers havent made many moves especially to the core of the team and look at them now!!

hey Cuz I also think that like tophat said that if Johnson or Mussina go down the team is toasted. they need Pitching and they will be fine. Pitching wins always right? I just dont think it is New Yorks year anyway. they are 3 back of Boston and 8 back of the White Sox for the Wild Card playoff spot. Although there is still a loooooooong way to go

bob260505, One way or another there's bound to be some sort of shake up in the Cubs' organization. Dusty Baker's time there is limited, and I believe he's now a lame duck coach there. As for the situation regarding Wood and Prior, one or the other if not both will be traded. The fans have seen their entire seasons rest upon the shoulders of these two supposed aces and all to no avail. Continuous injuries, however slight have become the norm. It's certainly time for a change!
Whether or not management has the temerity to shake things up is another question.
