According to Jay Glazier at Foxsports.com, Charles Woodson have agreed to terms on a seven-year deal in the $45 million range for Pro Bowl and Heisman Trophy-winning defensive back Charles Woodson. The Packers have been very quiet in the off-season as far as big name free-agent signings. Charles Woodson was a Franchise player for the Raiders last year and earned over $10 million. Woodson was the type of corner that took away almost half the field. He was known for that at Michigan when he won the Heisman trophy. This contract is also not yet signed. It is an incentive laiden contract which in my opinion is not how he should be paid. He does take away almost half the field (when he does actually play). Which means, he doesn't get the ball thrown his way as much. With the contract paying him $10.5 Million the first year that leave $34.5 million left for the last 6 years. That averages out to 5.75 per. Quite a bargain if he works out. If he doesn't, they can cut him. There are no guaranteed contracts, only guaranteed bonus money. But at 5.75 million per year he will work out. The Packers have more room this year and spread out works great for the teams well. If it works it works, at least they tried. Besides, how will you ever get the fruit if you are afraid to go out on a limb.
Charles Woodson has not been the type of player to take over half the field in quite a while. The Packers need help on D, so this is a good sign for them. But Woodson is overrated
I agree with what you say to a point. It should be a incentive laden contact based on games played. He has been injured a lot over the past few years, he should not command a huge contact and not play at least 12 games/ yr over the contract. If he makes $10mil and only plays 6-8 games that is robbery.
He only played 6 games last year. He missed 4 games the 2 years before that. You are right though, it does have to be some what incentive laiden but remember, these contracts arent gauranteed, so if he is living up to his end or he is injured they can cut him. The key is how much will the bonus be.
dont forget he's a head case in the locker room, and had some off-the-field problems the past few years....just what the packers need.
i heard the deal was for $52 million, but that may have included all the incentives he could attain.
the only good thing about this is it might mark the end to ahmad carroll's time as a member of the packers. if so, we're trading one bad apple for another, and paying him more. somehow that doesnt make too much sense to me.
Woodsons a good pickup if he performs well, but if I was Brett and the Pack I would be wineing and dining Mr. Walker and begging him to stay, without walker and no good free agent recievers out there they will be done without him. If they trade him by the draft they should go after Jackson from Florida...
regardless of how well woodson plays, they overpaid tremendously for him.
as for walker, its done, he's not coming back until he realizes if he doesnt play in 6 games, he cant get away next offseason either. the only option is a trade, and they wont let him go for nothing. jackson wont be on the board after the packers pick #5, and there is no way they should take him that early.
Have fun with this guy Packer fans. Don't get me wrong, I loved the guy when he was playing well but the last time he did that was about 5 years ago. You know he aint playing though minor injuries in that weather when he can't even get onto the field in sunny California. I wish the man well but it's about damn time he left Oakland!
I don't know if this is a good deal for the Pack. They have Al Harris. Using the money on Lavar Arrington would've been a better move. At least they are trying to make it competitive for Brett Favre.
I don't see how he's going to help the Packers much, he's on the back end of his career and he hasn't been much of a factor the past few years. I could be wrong, maybe going to a new team will adjust his attitude. I guess we'll find out in September.
Let's not forget about the hype surrounding the last corner let go out of Oakland.
Chris Berman called Philip Buchanon a "shut down corner" (those exact words) during ESPN's NFL opener between the Raiders & Patriots.
Charles Woodson has NEVER been a shut down corner. He was ruined by the league enforcing the 5 yard no touch rule because his game is to get physical. When he humbles himself into working hard again, he *might* be a good free safety. As DJ says (and I said immediately elsewhere) he will not stay healthy in that weather. My O/U is 9.5 on his games played this year & I'm going under.
norcal- the safety idea sucks for 2 reasons. 1. we have 2 safeties now, with nick collins and signing marquand manuel. 2. paying a safety $7+ mil per should be reserved for a guy who has proven his worth at the position, not played himself out of a different one.
jcarr- F%&K brett favre. unfortunately, thats what this signing comes down to...making little boy brett happy that the packers are supposedly trying to field a playoff caliber team. that money would have been better spent in next year's free agency and draft. instead, this signing, coupled with this and next year's draft picks, will put the team right back in salary cap purgatory once again.
irish- i dont think he's really been lock-down since he left michigan. i still cant for the life of me figure out why they're spending so much money on him. nothing i've seen or heard about him in the last 4 years makes me believe he'll live up to half the money he'll be earning.
DJ BO- i'm blaming all this on you, lol. couldnt you have pushed him toward his old coach chuckie a little more?
by the way, lavar arrington wouldnt have been worth the money he would have commanded from the packers either. even though they did reportedly make an offer, AND brett favre called him to beg him to come to green bay, he still chose the giants.
cuz - I'll take the blame on this one. I'm just glad we aint paying him $10 mil again! However, let me add this: the corner idea sucks for 2 reasons. 1. paying a CB $7+ mil per should be reserved for a guy who play a majority of the games in a single season. 2. The guy couldn't cover ME on the football field! He has so many nagging injuries that he makes up one or two a year that I've never heard of before. This guy is DONE!
I wasn't suggesting it for Green Bay this year necessarily, just assessing what his value would be at this time in his career. Unfortunately, it is pretty much zip. I wish Al Davis had figured that out a season or more ago and at least gotten a 4th round draft pick for him.
It is sort of like Arnold Palmer at current golf tournaments. He can still feel the stroke in his mind, but his body can't react. Woodson knows how to cover, but with his physical advantage long gone & legs failing him it is all over but the whining... sorry dude, that's just reality. The sad part is that he can't even impart knowledge on the younger guys because he is not a leader whatsoever. The best he can do is get them into trouble on & off the field. He should be wearing a warning sticker.
this signing actually makes me wish they could have landed arrington instead. and i dont like arrington at all, that should tell you what i think of woodson.
