A little Nookie before the game anyone?
Jun 27, 2007 | 3:23PM | report this

"Being with a woman never hurt no professional ball player. It's staying up all night looking for a woman that does him in." - Casey Stengel

Abstinence the night before a sporting event is preached by many coaches and practiced by some athletes. It has long been believed that sex before any competition zaps one’s energy while no hanky-panky can build up aggression. There are some examples that seem to prove this theory. Muhammad Ali abstained from sex for six weeks before climbing into the ring. Rickson Gracie refused to do the “mess-a-round” for at least 2 weeks before his bouts. Champion race horses are virgins until retirement when they are sent out to stud. Even Mickey, Rocky Balboa’s trainer said, “Women weaken the legs.”

But does sex the night before the big game really have any negative impact on the athlete? According to scientists, the answer is NO! There is simply no evidence to support this myth. In fact, there are studies that show pre-sports whoopee may actually raise testosterone levels. Emmanuele A. Jannini of the University of L'Aquila in Italy is a professor of endocrinology, the study of bodily secretions. After studying the effects of sex on the performance of an athlete, Jannini found that sex in fact boosts aggression by stimulating the production of testosterone. "After three months without sex, which is not so uncommon for some athletes, testosterone dramatically drops to levels close to children's levels," he said. "Do you think this may be useful for a boxer?"

The news gets even better for the ladies! Barry Komisaruk, a psychology professor at Rutgers University in Newark, New Jersey says women who are sexually active produce a powerful pain-blocking effect which can combat muscle pain and other sport’s related injuries. "At least one of the mechanisms by which [sex] blocks pain is that it blocks the release of [a neuropeptide called] substance P, which is a pain transmitter," he said. The block can last up to 24 hours!

Maybe coaches use this line to make sure their athletes get the rest they need before the sporting event. But, come on…..even a great “roll in the hay” doesn’t burn THAT many calories so how tired could you be? I think it is just like anything else; use common sense!! If your body needs the rest then voedee-oh-doe early! Otherwise, unless you are a race horse, BLANK your brains out and you will still be good to go the next day!! Now, if you will excuse me, I have a basketball game tomorrow!  ;)

Fox Sports Bloggers Show....Questions I Would Have Asked, part 2
Jun 09, 2007 | 6:21PM | report this

In part one of my 3-part series, “Fox Sports Bloggers Show….Questions I Would Have Asked,” all three guests answered my questions with wit, grace, and the utmost speed of which I greatly appreciate. I enjoyed their responses and hope you did as well. Thank you again to lisa4usc, ReverendRhythm and 1steelerfan1. I do understand why you 3 are among the most popular here.

The following week’s guests on “Fox Sports Bloggers Show,” were equally as impressive. MeanDovine, AK47Spiderman, and The_Dan spread across the internet airways on May 30th. Mean is one of my favorites so I was very excited to listen to this show. As I said in part one, I had a hard time staying awake for the show so I will have to ask what questions I would have asked this lineup here on my blog. I ask FrankIrizarry to forgive me for answering the “sandman’s” call and I do promise to try to do better…lol

If any of you have questions for these 3 sports bloggers I encourage you to leave them here. I know any of the 3 will answer whatever you have to throw at them. Fuzzboss gave me a great idea when he answered questions I had posed to 1steelerfan1. Please feel free to answer any questions I ask of the “Fox Sports Bloggers Show” guests. I know I would be interested in hearing and comparing your answers.

MeanDovine, it is no secret I am a great admirer of yours. Your blogs are among the most intelligent reading not only here but anywhere one finds sports entertainment. Let’s face it; you will be famous if you are not already.

1. In your,”BEST DAMN GUARD: D-Wade, where art thou?” you talk about the disconnect between sports fans, a disinterested American public, advertisers, and the NBA itself and numbers back you up. I am a lover of basketball and I am having a hard time watching the NBA playoffs this year. How would you fix this problem and how long do you think it would take? When MJ left, did he take more with him than his game?

2. If you were the commissioner of the NBA what would be the 1 thing you would do to make the game more exciting?

3. Should the NBA change their rules to coincide with European rules or should they stay the same? Why?

4. What NBA player is as good in post season as they were during their post season college basketball career?

5. If you could choose any player from any decade to be on your all-star team, who would be the 5 starters?

6. You obviously have a passion for guards. Why? What makes the perfect PG in the NBA?

7. Can I have your autograph?

AK47Spiderman, it is great to read your blogs and posts on Fox Sports Blog. You have an obvious passion for the NBA and a talent for picking games. I think you have a bright future in front of you and look forward to your blogs!

1. In your opinion what should Stern have done after the fight during the Spurs/Suns series? Why?

2. What makes the perfect NBA coach?

3. Who is the best player in the game today and how does he compare with the greatest from the past? How do they differ…what do they have in common?

4. If you were over the WNBA, what would you do to bring the numbers up as far as television audiences and game crowds?

5. What do the Cavs have to do to win the championship? Realistically, can they do it?

The_Dan, I am ashamed to say I don’t know very much about you but I want to amend that right now! I just read the questions you posed to Americans from random Canadians and I am still laughing! Your intelligence and wit are clear to any reader. I look very forward to catching up with your blog. Forgive me for arriving so late?

1. In your opinion what is overall the best sport? Why?

2. How do the differences between CFB and the NFL impact the game? Are they for the better or worse?

3. I got a chance to see Wayne Gretsky play in person and instantly became a fan! In your opinion who is the best to ever play the game and why?

4. Who would be your dream guest on your sports radio show, “Bring the Noise”? What would you ask them?

5. Are CFL balls really bigger than NFL balls?  ;)

I will have part 3 up in a few days. For now, enjoy the answers from these 3 Fox blogging superstars. Feel free to either ask your questions or answer the questions I asked of them yourself. Don’t forget to listen to “Fox Sports Bloggers Show,” each Wednesday. Visit FrankIrizarry site to find out who the next All-Star Fox Sports bloggers will be speaking.

Fox Sports Bloggers Show....Questions I Would Have Asked
Jun 08, 2007 | 5:20PM | report this

"Fox Sports Bloggers Show," made its live debut Thursday, May 24th at 12 A.M. The host, FrankIrizarry, interviews 3 different guests each week and highlights specific blogs written by each guest along with questions submitted by fans during the live broadcast. The guests he has had on the show thus far are some of my favorite bloggers on Fox Sports. Unfortunately I have to get a very early start each morning so the questions I had for some of the guests remain unanswered……until now! This is the first of a 3-part series in which I will ask questions I would have asked had I been able to call.

First, for those of you who have not had a chance to neither listen nor read about the show let me give you a list of the 9 star bloggers who have appeared on the show. The 3 guest on the virgin show were lisa4usc, Reverend Rhythm, and 1steelerfan1. This was a fantastic crew to pop the cherry! On May 30th, the program moved to 11 P.M. with special guests MeanDovine, AK47Spiderman, and The_Dan…another great line-up! The latest presentation was June 6th and welcomed 3 more entertaining guests; Demonicume, ricko, and Hoffman.

If any of you would like to catch up on the shows, you can listen to each of them on "Fox Sports Bloggers Show” by following the link. So, now I am going to take this chance and ask some of those “all-stars” a few questions.

Lisa4usc, your knowledge of football is impressive. As a matter of fact you seem to have quite a bit of knowledge of any sport blogged.

1. Besides ability, in your opinion what are the main differences between college and Pro football?

2. Do you think the wishbone is outdated?

3. What do you think is the greatest college football game ever played? Greatest pro game?

4. If you were coaching the game, what defensive system would be your calling card?

5. Was there a question you wish were asked of you during the show? If so, what?

Reverend Rhythm, you were the reason I started blogging on Fox Sports ;)  I have enjoyed our banters so much and look forward to CBB season. It should be no surprise to you that my questions will all have to do with my favorite sport, college basketball.

1. It has long been my opinion that Duke gets special treatment from referees. I also think ESPN should be called “Duke’s Sports Station.” What is your opinion on both?

2. The game changed with the 3-point line, bringing into play guards and somewhat taking out the big man. What can the NCAA do to keep the guard in the game as it is but bring back the big man?

3. What changes, if any, would you make to the game?

4. You have taken the high road on the Donovan thing and I respect you for that. However, what has bothered you about the whole leaving – not leaving situation?

5. Donovan has 2 NCAA championships to his credit. Realistically, do you think he can tie or surpass Rupp?

6. In your opinion what is the greatest college basketball game ever played?

1steelerfan1, you were one of the first to post on my blog and since I am a Steelers fan you became one of my favorites. After I read your positive approach to sports, I admired you even more. I had a radio show and my approach was always positive. I figured there was enough negative coverage so why should I contribute. My questions to you will have to do with our beloved Steelers and pro football :)

1. In your opinion who was or is the greatest Steeler of all time? Greatest pro football player?

2. Has pro football changed for the better or worse since The Steel Curtain and why?

3. What is the greatest rivalry in pro football?

4. Only 7 teams have won 27 of the Super Bowls. In your opinion why is this?

5. Who is the greatest player to ever play the game? Who is the greatest player playing today? What do they have in common?

That ends part one of this series. In the next couple of days I will post part 2. I am really looking forward to all of the all-stars’ responses. If you have a question for any of them, now is your chance….ask away!!

Let's Come Together
May 09, 2007 | 5:43PM | report this

In April of 1997 Americans protested gas prices by conducting a “gas out” nationwide. Overnight prices dropped 30 cents per gallon. Americans are once again asked to ban together and protest the high gas prices. Gas in most places is over $3.00 a gallon and predicted to rise over $4.00. Democrats, Republicans and Independents need to be Americans first and foremost and once again join in a protest against this government and the oil companies.

May 15th all AMERICANS are asked to refrain from purchasing any gas. I have read there are 73,000,000+ American citizens on the internet network. The average car now costs anywhere between $30 to $50 dollars to fill their tanks. If each of us joins this protest the oil companies will lose approximately 3 BILLION dollars for just that one day.

So, please stay away from the gas stations; do not purchase any gasoline and let’s show the Oil industry and this government we will not be robbed any longer. Tell everyone you know; call them, email them, write them….just help get the word out. We can stop the thieves if we ban together.

The Woman With No Name
Apr 28, 2007 | 11:53AM | report this

Every day we read articles, watch highlights and previews all dedicated to coaches, players, and even referees and deservedly so. However, there is one person either ignored or forgotten in this mass of media. This article is dedicated to her, “The Coach’s Wife.”

One has or acquires many different qualities to be a coach’s wife. Patience, kindness, and above all, the ability to hold one’s tongue are all virtues of this lady. It isn’t easy sitting in the stands and listening to many so-called “experts” give their opinion on what their husband should or should not be doing. Whether the team wins or loses, she is and remains her husband’s biggest fan. The one person he can always count on. She listens to what might have gone wrong and serves as an assistant coach in the early morning hours. Many times, serving as a buffer, this lady saves quite a few of the players or fans from the brunt of their coach’s anger.

To this woman with no name except that of “The Coach’s Wife”, we salute you. I hope in some small way this article will show you are appreciated and recognized. I once wore the title of “Coach’s Wife.” My husband was at one time the head coach of all three major sports at Fleming Neon High School. I have heard the “good job” when we won and held my tongue against the critics over a loss. I have had people come to my home and disrupt my family to speak with my husband. Over the years I learned to turn my phone off, stop parents from coming to my home and never, ever sit in the stands. I was a coach’s wife, not a nun! Don’t get me wrong, the majority of fans and parents are great. However, it is the select few that seem to take up all your time.

My husband brought this poem to me years ago. He found it in the Lexington Herald and I have kept it all this time. There was no author listed. I would like to share it with her..... “The Woman With No Name.”

Who’s that sitting there?

She’s here for every game.

“Oh, she’s just the coach’s wife.

I can’t recall her name.”

That’s all the recognition that

A coach’s wife will get.

Unless she’s very vocal

And with each call she throws a fit.

You’re a housewife, working mother,

Assistant Coach and lover too.

And if time permits

There’s more for you to do.

You sometimes feel you’re third

On the list of things to do.

First, there’s the game,

Then the kids, then maybe you.

You never have much money.

Sears and Penny’s get your trade.

And just when you think you’re settled

Another move is made.

You begin to wonder

If it’s worth the pressure, hurt and pain.

And those silly kids

Go and win another game.

The home folks, they go crazy.

And you get a smile or two.

And it starts to make worth

All the things that you’ve been through.
