Here come the "I told you so" arguments.
Jan 07, 2008 | 12:57PM | report this

The BCS games yielded a number of I told you so games this year, and we havent heard the last of it yet.  USC beat Illinois, shocker!  UGA beat Hawaii, cue the "Hawaii didnt belong" talk.  And either way the championship goes tonight, Im sure that the overwhelming majority will once again race to their keyboards for another thrilling "I told you so" story.  Well, after the football season, since the NBA lasts too long for some  to make the obvious prediction (ex. I guarantee the celtics win their first round series and here are 38 reasons why!) I can throw out a few gems.  Prediction 1. The sun rises in the morning.  Prediction 2. Tax season is upon us.  Prediction 3. Signing day will be more exciting than last nights GMAC bowl, at least for everyone other that Tulsa fans.  Prediction 4. Easter. And Prediction 5. Manny will be Manny.

Now that the obvious are out there, I have prepared a few bold predictions that I would like to see a case made for. Bold Prediction scenario 1. Tom Brady punches Mercury Morris after going undefeated.  Bold prediction scenario 2.  Lakers to claim NBA title and Phil somehow spitting out more lame jokes.  Bold prediction scenario 3. A-Rod as world series MVP (and if a compelling enough argument is made here then you get 1/2 his contract, contact Boras for details.)  Bold prediction scenario 4. Playoff hockey sets record for highest ratings ever (America just doesn't care enough to look for the versus network, let alone find it.  And without Sid or two major hockeytowns fighting for the cup, its too tough of a sale.)  Bold prediction scenario 5.  Dale Jr. wins NNC. (will Gordon or Johnson allow new teammate to do so, looking forward to this one.)  And finally, Bold Predictions Scenario 6.  USC could beat Big 12 champion, Big 10 champion, Big East champion, ACC champion, SEC champion, and WAC champion all in the same week.

My only prediction for now is that well over half of the people that read this post, absolutely hated it.  Oh well, Im one for one in 08!

Congratulations Hawaii, and we are sorry
Dec 05, 2007 | 12:31PM | report this

Hawaii got a BCS bowl and they desrved it.  But did they deserve to get Georgia?  A little harsh,  they could have gotten Kansas/Missouri or Illinois.  Nobody wants to come to Hawaii anymore because Hawaii is such a scary offensive team.  Which is why they needes a better draw in their bowl in order to win and attract recruits because next year they visit Florida and oregon state.  Two years they go to USC, so a win would be great for the program.

Am I writing them off completely, not quite.  Tennessee gave Georgia much more than they could handle (yes Tennessee's Defense is much better than Hawaii's) because they had a quarterback that runs his offense well, makes the correct audibles, is very accurate and does not get sacked.  If Hawaii can get scores quickly on this Georgia defense (that is superior to any that Hawaii has faced this year) than Hawaii could take out spectacular running backs Moreno and Thomas Brown.  The only problem is Stafford is a good quarterback too, and Mikey Henderson, Sean Bailey, Tripp Chandelr, and Mohamed Massaquoi will be better receivers than the Hawaii db's have had to cover outside of practice this year.

The key factor that works in Hawaii's favor is the youth on the Georgia roster.  Two seniors start on a constant basis and four contribute for the Georgia defense.  Hawaii's offense boasts 9 juniors and seniors (both sophomores are on the line.)  The Skill position has been together for three years ripping up defense after defense and with a month to plan his attack, June Jones will have plenty in store for the young bulldogs.

In the end, Georgia's offense will be too powerfull for the Hawaii defense.  The offense will put pressure on the dogs, and Brennan will put up points and great numbers, but Georgia has too much for the Warriors.  Georgia in a close one.

Playoffs in College Football
Nov 26, 2007 | 3:55PM | report this

Crazy things happen in the post-season, Boise State beat Oklahoma, Utah beat Pittsburgh, Auburn goes undefeated and does not get a ring, USC loses once and still shares one with LSU.  Upsets and rivalries are what make college football so great.  We have witnessed many upsets in what is sure to go down as one of the greatest seasons ever.  This year's Top 25 has seen more changes, facelifts, and fluxuation than most movie stars could handle.   We have seen programs rise, others fall.  We have seen coaches be forced to the edge; some have since been pushed, while others may await pay raises after season's end.  This year’s national championship picture is as close as the heisman race.  In this crazy phenomenon we like to call college football it only makes sense to clear it up a bit and implement a playoff system right?  If I may steal from Lee Corso "Not so fast my friend."  (Sorry, won't happen again.)  College football needs to be debated.  Why else would a Top 25 poll be issued so far away from the season?  Why else would seventeen and eighteen year-old’s college choices bring so many non-relatives to these boys in such agony or such relief?  Yes even recruiting has become big enough that we watch high school football from halfway across the country so we can be the first to either declare a prodigy in the making, or an overrated running back (mostly depends on if he commits to your school or a rival in most cases) when all we really know is that this sophomore quarterback we are watching takes his driver’s test tomorrow.

This season has not disappointed, we have seen number one after number fall to the hands of double digit underdogs, powerhouses lose at home to lesser schools, and upsets week in and week out.  Only one school remains undefeated, zero on the mainland.  Is the BCS perfect?  No, but neither will this year’s champion be perfect.  Hawaii stands alone with their unblemished record.  And just as Boise State last year, and the Utah team from a few years ago, they have the recipe for an upset in a BCS game:

a) non-BCS school given little respect, b) a quarterback who throws as well as he leads (granted Zabransky’s not the talent equivalent to Colt Brennan or Alex Smith in college, but he was a great leader)             c) a coach not afraid to be unconventional, and d) players who recognize that unlike USC, LSU, and Oklahoma, they don’t get to be in this conversation all four years of their college career, this may well be their only shot.

It doesn’t take much to take down the big guy, an injury here, a bounce that goes your way there, and yes, you’ve got an upset.  However, that doesn’t mean that we should have playoffs.  Sorry Georgia, Oklahoma, Kansas, and LSU, but if we had a playoff system than a three loss Florida team may run the table and our champion would have finished third in their own division, not conference, but division!  Last year nearly saw a rematch of Ohio State v. Michigan, but the BCS saved the season and proved to be efficient when USC took care of Michigan.  So let’s put the playoff talk to bed, “Good night sweetheart.”

(It was too tempting.)
