Jerry Angelo, a Franchise QB and The Bears... O-My
May 07, 2008 | 5:01PM | report this

Hello all this is my first Blog so be nice :) haha

I was reading some posts on the Chicago Bears message boards and I think it’s been figured out.  Jerry Angelo is doing the right thing when it comes to a QB.

In the draft of 2006 when there was this outpouring of talk about how Jerry Angelo had to draft a TE and if he did not do it the world would end Jerry shocked Chicago and that world by trading out of the first round and picking two obscure DB’s in the second round.  One was a safety (Daniel manning) who was a starter in the SB, and the other was a guy by the name of Devin Hester. You may remember his kickoff return to start the SB and his two record breaking season?.  After the draft a certain expert at ESPN called the Hester pick the worst pick of the entire draft.

Written by Todd Mcshay in 2006
Worst pick: Devin Hester, RS, and Miami. This pick would have been fine had the team not taken Danieal Manning (Abilene Christian) earlier in the second round. Manning was a decent value because of his potential versatility as a free safety/cornerback tweener with experience in the return game. Hester is more explosive in the return game, but he doesn't have a position on offense or defense. So the team essentially used its second of two picks in Round 2 on a return specialist when it could have gotten production in that area from Manning. Better options with the 57th overall pick would have included Western Michigan tight end Tony Scheffler or Fresno State DC Richard Marshall.

Anyway… as I was saying when Jerry Angelo decided to not draft a TE in the first round that people we incensed.  The top tier guys were gone in the 2nd and 3rd rounds and we wound up going into 2007 with a guy named Desmond Clark as our #1 TE.  We still need a TE but JA did not panic and let Clark play and play he did.  He rewarded JA with a very solid season.  Clark gained 626 yards on 45 catches for an average of 13.9 and 6TD’s.  They guys the bears “should have picked” at the TE position did not do so well in comparison.

Jerry Angelo got very lucky (if you think its luck) because he did not draft a TE in 2006 and the other teams that really needed one invested 1st and 2nd round picksin 2006.  So, when the 2007 draft started a guy named Greg Olsen dropped right into JA's lap with the 32nd pick.  If SF, AZ, and others had not drafted TE’s in 2006 Olsen would have been long gone.   Olsen rewarded the bears by catching 39 balls for 391 yards and 2 TD’s while playing along side Desmond Clark who posted another solid year in 2007.

With all the above in mind lets get back to the 2008 NFL draft.  Most pundits and a whole lot of Bears fans think JA made a huge mistake not reaching for Flacco at 14 or drafting a second tier QB like Henne or Josh Johnson in the second round, and some are even calling for Jerry Angelo’s head.

Let’s take past experience and get some perspective on what Jerry Angelo could be thinking….

Most of the teams that needed QB's got one in this draft.  By waiting the extra year, the demand has now lessened but the supply of available QB will actually be high next year. (Supply vs. Demand) Not just in the draft but FA and trades. McNabb's contract and cap number will be pretty high in 2009 if the Eagles hold on to him.  Cleveland will have to decide which QB to keep Anderson or Quinn.  Arizona’s Leinert or Warner could be available and Kyle Boller, Rex Grossman and JP Losman all become free Agents.  Add to this Culpepper, McNown, Carr and the rest and the FA market could be flooded with QB’s (chucky over in TB may sign 5 more QB’s!! lol)

There will be more QB’s available then there will be teams to sign them next off season, and the teams that drafted future starters in 2007 and 2008 (Atlanta, Miami, Baltimore, Green bay, Minnesota, Buffalo, Tenn., Phoenix,) will not be in the market for a new QB through the draft.  I believe Angelo's thinking is actually preety goodm and that is if Grossman and Orton play poorly the bears will have set themselves in a position to sign, trade and or draft for a QB of the Choice.  If one of them plays well after winning the preseason battle they will not have to do any of the above, and can again grab the best player on thier boards in the 2009 draft.

Is jerry that smart? I think he is and I assume Bears ownership do too or they may have not given him an extension to 2012.

So, In closing dont "misunderestimate" the Bears GM because he has proven he knows what he is doing, or atleast that he can be lucky!! :)
