Why JaMarcus Russell is better then Brady Quinn
Jan 02, 2007 | 3:32PM | report this

JaMarcus Russell (L) celebrates with Dwayne Bowe, LSU's leader in career TD catches. (US PRESSWIRE) Brady Quinn leads Notre Dame to scores on its first five possessions. (US PRESSWIRE)

Ten reasons for why JaMarcus Russell is a better college QB then Brady Quinn and will also be a better pro QB. Oakland, are you listening?

1.  Record as a starter:

JaMarcus Russell: 24-4
- Eight come-from-behind wins in the fourth quarter or overtime

Brady Quinn: 29-16
- 0-4 against USC
- 0-3 in bowl games
- Embarrassing loss against Michigan

2. Competition:

JaMarcus Russell:

- Had to win the starting job through an open competition his junior season. Beat out talented backup QB Matt Flynn and Ryan Perrilloux, the top high school QB prospect in 2005.

Brady Quinn:

Carlyle Holiday????

3. Heart

JaMarcus Russell:

Had to lead an LSU team post Hurricane Katrina.

JaMarcus the jewel: Heroic QB leads LSU vs. Auburn in top-10 battle

"Then there are his good deeds out of uniform: the 20 people he housed for a month in his apartment after Hurricane Katrina, including his girlfriend's grandfather, otherwise known as Fats Domino; the green bracelet that reads "Donate Life" to show support for organ and tissue donors, in honor of his uncle Ray Ray Russell, who needs a heart transplant."

Brady Quinn:

In the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl last year against Ohio State, Quinn had to play against A.J. Hawk, who his sister was dating and later married.

4. Product of the System?

JaMarucs Russell:

Played under Nick Saban his first two years and then became a star under Les Miles, a supposedly "lesser" coach his sophomore and junior season.

Brady Quinn:

Struggled under Tyrone Willingham his first two years and blossomed under offensive guro Charlie Weiss.

5. Potential

JaMarcus Russell:

Has gotten better and better throughout his career as a passing quarterback. Had a higher QB rating then Troy Smith this season.

Brady Quinn:

May have slightly regressed in terms of numbers his senior season. Has he pulled a Matt Leinart.

6. Size/Strength

JaMarcus Russell:

6-6, 260 pounds. We will see how much he can bench press and squat during the combine.

Brady Quinn:

6-4, 227 pounds. He can bench press 350 pounds (160 kg), and squat 475 pounds (215 kg).

7. Mobility

JaMarcus Russell:

Not really mobile but his size makes him hard to sack and tackle. Charlie Weiss compared him to a young Daunte Culpepper, which could be good or bad. Russell is actually bigger then Culpepper.

Brady Quinn:

A good athlete however, nothing special compared to other NFL QB's.

8. Intelligence

JaMarcus Russell:

Made the SEC Academic Honor Roll.

Brady Quinn:

From wiki: has a double major of finance and political science. He will graduate in January of 2007 (in 3 and a half years). However, as we have found out with Vince Young and Michael Vick, "book smarts" is not really important to become a star QB.

9. Arm Strength:

JaMarcus Russell:

It doesn't hurt that Russell's arm strength awes teammates. Take LSU tailback Jacob Hester, who played with John David Booty (now USC's starting quarterback) in high school.

"In my opinion, JaMarcus has the best arm in the country," Hester says. "John David Booty has a good arm, but JaMarcus' (arm) is incredible."

Overlook LSU's Russell at your own risk

Brady Quinn:

Good enough for the NFL, although great arm strength does not make a great NFL QB.

10. Overall

Brady Quinn is a great quarterback. He has size, arm strength and the feet to be a good NFL quarterback. I just think my guy (Russell) is better.

I don't know if I agree with every point, like arm strength for example. Hard to compare Russell now with Booty in high school. Having said that, Russell has grown by leaps and bounds since last season, and I would also take him over Quinn. I also like the fact that he's played in more big games than Quinn.

Good arguement, can't really say much. Except Brady Quinn plays for a coach who got him NFL Ready.
Only way to see if this theory is true is to watch them go head to head today.

why compare now ... life has a way of leveling things out ... it depends a lot on where you go to in the draft .. reggie bush may have been a flop if he didn't go to the saints .brady quinn has paid his dues and is liable to beat lsu tonite... which quite frankly has the better team (LSU )

This will make for an interesting game, with the possible number one draft status and millions of future Escalade dollars on the line. Raiders may take whoever plays better in this one ballgame with their first selection in the next NFL draft as they are now "on the clock."

Is it just me, or do Brady Quinn's arms look HUGE, more like a fullback than a quarterback?

Rev, it is those little shoulder pads he wears!

All decent points, I can see your bias but we know the Wonderlick test will separate the two of them.

Good take, but you have some questionable arguments. Seems like you're reaching on some of these (why say that Russell is more intelligent by using his book smarts, only to turn around and say that book smarts don't matter?).

tigervidmar has the best take. Why compare when they will face different fates?

If my Lions take Quinn I will scream. In fact I dont even want my Lions taking a pick in the top ten.

Quinn reminds me of Joey Harrington and people just like his looks as well. America loves the beautiful people.

All you have to do is watch the game.

If LSU does not win by 20 points, I will be in shock.

In other words, Romney should go back earlier than JFK, and emulate George Washington. In his farewell address, the original George W. said: “Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, Religion and Morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of Patriotism who should labor to subvert these great Pillars of human happiness — these firmest props of the duties of Men and citizens. The mere Politician, equally with the pious man, ought to respect and to cherish them.”

I just watched the Sugar Bowl. I didn't know who Jarmarcus Russel was before this game; I didn't even know who LSU's starting quarterback was. Everyone who watched that game now knows his name. He's a phenomenal talent. It's more than apparent that he's a top 5 draft pick, depending upon a team's needs. Quinn had a good season, but the facts are the facts, in big games against ranked opponents, he has not shown up. He looked bad in the Michigan blowout, the USC blowout, and, most recently, the LSU blowout. ND's TV contract with NBC, their weak schedule, and the profitability concerns of networks-advertisers greatly helped ND capacity to garner a BCS bid. Robert Smith's assessment of ND on ESPN following the game was accurate, their just not that good. And, in my opinion, Brady Quinn has been unable to compensate for his team's deficiencies against ranked opponents. Based upon what I have seen of him this year, I would have to conclude that he's been overrated all year and his success in the NFL is far from certain.

This is just my opinion,

I will take Russell any day of the week. I have said it all year long: Russell gets no respect b/c LSU never gets any. Look at the talking points tonight, it was 90% ND has not won a bowl game in 9 years. Maybe if Quinn's arms were not so big he could throw the ball a little better.

Early prediction: Jamarcus is a top five pick.

Brady Quinn does not go in the first round.

Unless Millen picks him.

LSUfan, congrats on a great victory.

VIP Did you catch the part during the Sugar Bowl where Terry Bradshaw was describing Jamarcus Russell's arm strength? He can thow the ball 40 yards while planted on his butt! This might be really useful if he gets drafted by the Raiders.

The Browns will make a big mistake when they fall in love with the local kid in Brady Quinn. The Browns probably would be better off trading down for Troy Smith because at this point I think Smith will be a better NFL QB then Quinn!

Forget about Oakland, and I think Detroit, Quinn's draft stock is falling farther then Bush's approval rating!

If the Bucs draft him, Gruden could mold him into a stud but Quinn does not look like a franchise QB..

great post.

Stats of the game:

J. Russell 21/34 332 2TD 1 INT, 5yd run for TD

B. Quinn 15/35 148 2TD 2 INT

but....

Russell didn't have to play against the LSU defense either.

toss up.

Quinn may be the better pro.

I believe Jamarccus russell is a very good and successful quarterback but there is also one thing i disagree with. That is Jamarccus is not better than Quinn. One thing i totally disagree with is heart. Brady Quinn has the most heart ive seen froma qb in a long time. Even in the loses in the Usc game down 44-28 he tried his hardest after getttin knocked around and a rough game from the offense he still didnt give up. In the michigan and lsu loses he took it lk a man he didnt say anythin that wasnt bad he accepted the way it came they played abetter game than notre dame. Yes notre dame does not have a good offense but Brady quinn i believe is more mobile, Russell is a big guy and is hard to tackled but vs notre dame he never got a big run. Quinn had key qb sneaks first downs in the georgia tech game and i including a 60 yard run vs usc. He runs a 4.7 which is very good for a qb his size and he is about .1 second behind troy smith who is 5 inches and 15 pounds samaller. So i think brady quinn is better than Russell

also i believe that russell didnt have to go against his own defense. He went against notre dames defense one of the worst they have ever been on that side of the ball. Quinn had better stats than russell throughtout the season so that shows brady quinn would mess up his own defense. Also quinn played against michigan and usc and still put up those stats at the end of the year

i believe none of this makes sense. Especially when u talk about the arm strength part. for russell u talk about how good his arm strength he has nd then u say brady quinn has good arm strength but to be in the nfl u dont need good arm strength(which i believe also doesnt make sense becuase look at pennington). So if u say russell has good arm strength thats all you got to say and then when u say it for quinn u say u dont need that for the nfl. Read it over it will make some more sense.also when u say that he played under nick saban he played well but quinn actially runs the patriots offense and learns from the best qb tom brady. Also u say russell had to fight for his spot but i dont see russell as a true freshman so i dont no what your talking about and what do you think willingham just came up to quinn after 7 games and said your the starting qb, i dont think it works like that. I believe in the 3 comments i left i totally proved every aspect of these reasons wrong

Not, even one of these is a good reason

1. Records ???? Brady, Started as a Freshman is more battle heartened and to bet had a #### Defense all 4 years
2. Brady obviously was good enough to start as a Freshman, Caryle Holiday was also highly recruited out of high school
3. Heart ??? anyone with a brain that has watched Brady saw him run around and bust his #### off against ANY TEAM he played... he's a warrior and never EVER gave up... Jamarcus ??? Showed up to the combine about 20 pounds over what he should ACTUALLY WEIGH
4. Product of the system ??? All you did here was say why Brady is a better qb.. he's groomed by the qb coaches of coaches
5. Ya, and Leinart has done terrible so far hasn't he ??
6. Brady Benched more than some lineman at the combine
Jamarcus showed up outta shape and fat..... He is the pillsbury throwboy
7.Dante Culpepper ?????? Ya thats a comparison i wanna draw..... a washed up qb with a strong arm.. To bet... Culpepper could run circles around him
Brady runs a 4.6 and had a 70 YARD RUN AGAINST USC and hes not Mobile stfu... Tom Brady couldnt run 20 yards
8. HAHAHHAHAHAHA LSU or Notre Dame What did Jamarcus Major in ?? Pool management probably
Then you say Vince Young and Mike Vick what have they done yet ???? Both always have terrible QB Ratings
9. Brady's arm Strength is good enough for the NFL but you say grea arm strength doesnt make a great NFL QB but the only Jamarcus has is great Arm Strength
10. Ok, ya what COACH doesnt want there guy... If Charlie Weis says that Brady in 3 years will be a top 3 qb in the NFL to boot he'
