Here are some trade ideas that I have come up with purely to get rid of some of our bad contracts. We get some bad contracts in return on some of them, but they aren't as bad as the ones we have now.
So unless Vladi and Luke can step it up, any one of these trades might be a good solution for the Lakers. Some of these trades may decrease the talent on the Lakers, but they free up time for Trevor Ariza and other players to actually get good minutes.
And Also....
I have a private league on Ultimate Fantasy Commissioner on NBA.com
If you would like to join please leave a comment or message me.
I will need your e-mail address to be able to invite you to the league.
If you want to join I will tell you the league name and entry password.
There are only 10 teams in the league so first come first serve and the sooner you join, the higher draft pick you will get in the first round.
You also need an NBA.com account to join. They are free so just go to NBA.com and sign up!
This is just the possibilty I think there is of certain trades with Lamar Odom. I got the idea from a fannation blog on SI.com.
1) Lamar Odom to Nuggets for Carmelo Anthony
Odds: 10:1
Carmelo Anthony is a far superior player to Odom, but if the Nuggets want to rebuild then getting a big expiring contract would help. Iverson's contract is expiring after this season also, so this trade would give them a lot of money for the 2010 offseason. The Lakers would be stupid not to take a player of Carmelo's talent for Odom.
2) Lamar Odom and filler to Heat for Shawn Marion
Odds: 15:1
The Heat don't really want to keep Marion, and they really like Odom so this could work. The Lakers might want a more traditional SF so they could do this deal.
3) Lamar Odom to Bobcats for Jason Ricardson and Sean May
Odds: 20:1
The only problem for the Lakers would be that they get another shooting guard, but since J-Rich and Kobe can play SF and SG they could just switch off playing each position. It also gives the Lakers a good backup big man. This probably wouldn't happen though.
4) Lamar Odom to Rockets for Ron Artest and filler
Odds: 30:1
If the Rockets are imploding because of Artest they would want to trade him, and since the Lakers might want him if they aren't doing well either trade works but Rockets would have to add a big contract to make it work.
5) Lamar Odom doesn't get traded
Odds: 5:1
I don't think Odom will get traded unless the tall lineup doesn't work and he refuses to be a 6th man or the Nuggets offer Carmelo Anthony.
Just Missed Out: Andre Igoudala, Sixers; Kevin Durant, Sonics; James Posey, Hornets; Michael Beasley, Heat; Corey Maggette, Warriors; Lamar Odom, Lakers; Josh Howard, Mavericks; Gerald Wallace, Bobcats
10. Danny Granger, Pacers
Danny Granger is now the face of the Pacers franchise after the trade of Jermaine O'Neal. He should continue to get better and will be near the top of this list in a couple of years.
Rudy #### is a spectacular player on a sucky team. He is one of the best dunkers in the league, but he is also a decent shooter and uses his length to be a decent defender.
8. Hedo Turkoglu, Magic
Hedo wouldn't even be in the discussion for best small forwards in the league if it wasn't for his great season last season. He proved to be more valuable that major free agent pickup Rashard Lewis, and won the most improved player award.
7. Shawn Marion, Heat
Marion is one of the most versatile players in the league, and great defender. But he will not have Steve Nash to lead the break for him this season so it will be interesting to see what happens to his stats. He also may have an ugly jumpshot, but he is a decent shooter.
6. Caron Butler, Wizards
Caron Butler is an extremely poor man's Kobe Bryant and Lebron James. Lebron, Kobe, and Butler were the only 3 people last season to average over 20 ppg, 5 apg, and 5 rpg for the season.
5. Richard Jefferson, Nets
Richard Jefferson is an underrated defender, and just all around player. He can shoot and is one of the best slashers in the league. It will be interesting to see how he does without a Hall of Fame point guard passing to him.
4. Ron Artest, Rockets
Artest is one of the best perimeter defenders in the league, and unlike most other great defenders, he has a good offensive game. He should help the Rockets finally get out of the first round this season.
3. Paul Pierce, Celtics
Paul Pierce has become a much better shooter this past season (probably because he isn't nearly as athletic anymore and can't just go in an dunk it). He proved that he can put him massive ego aside to win a ring but the question is: Can he do it twice, especially after claiming he is the best player in the league?
2. Carmelo Anthony, Nuggets
Has a way better post game and jumpshot that Lebron, but can't do anything else nearly as well and isn't nearly the leader that Lebron is. If he can improve on those things than he will be the best small forward in the league.
1. Lebron James, Cavaliers
Lebron James is the most physically gifted athlete in the world. He can jump super high, play for super long, and just do anything athletic-related for a long time. He doesn't have a good jumpshot or post game and his defense isn't superb, but he is the clear answer for best small forward in the league until Carmelo anthony becomes a better leader and defender.
David West went from being an unknown, to being the only person on the all star team to have their name on both sides of the jersey. He has a good mid-range jumpshot and is a tough player.
9. Al Jefferson, Timberwolves
Al Jefferson is a perfect example of someone who puts up all-star type numbers on a terrible team. He was the primary asset of the Garnett deal, and is considered to be a young Garnett.
8. Antawn Jamison, Wizards
Antawn Jamison has a really good three point shot, and is a good post scorer. He was one of the few people to average 20 and 10 last season, but the star of the team was injured so it would be hard for him to post those kinds of numbers this upcoming season.
7. Carlos Boozer, Jazz
Boozer has a tendency to disappear during the playoffs, but during the regular season he is a 20 and 10 guy. He has a good mid-range jumpshot and plays just like Karl Malone. He is in a contract year, so expect him to play great.
6. Elton Brand, Sixers
Elton Brand may have missed most of last season because of injury, but even though he is on the Clippers, no basketball fan forgot about him. Now he is on the best team of his life, and in the Eastern Conference to he should go far in the playoffs.
5. Chris Bosh, Raptors
Bosh is a little thin for a power forward, but he was the easy choice to start on the Eastern Conference All-Star team before Garnett got traded. He has a good post game and might be the best in the league at making full courters.
4. Dirk Nowitzki, Mavericks
Dirk has the best jumpshot of all big men, but he doesn't have a very strong post game and plays more like a guard than a power forward. But he is still a good rebounder and has made himself into a more rounded player.
3. Kevin Garnett, Celtics
KG was the heart and soul of the Celtics last season when they won their first title in over 20 years, and 17th overall. Some may say that Pierce is the best player on the Celtics because he led them in scoring and won Finals MVP, but I believe that Garnett is the best player on the Celtics.
2. Tim Duncan, Spurs
Tim Duncan is considered by many to be the greatest power forward ever, but he is now older and Manu Ginobili had made himself the highest scorer for the Spurs. Duncan is still a dominant rebounder and has one of the best post games ever, but Stoudemire is so much more athletic which helps him.
1. Amare Stoudemire, Suns
This may be a surprising choice to some considering that Kevin Garnett and Tim Duncan are still in the league at superstar form, but Stoudemire had evolved into a high scorer and stong rebounder. If he could play better defense and get his teammates invloved more then he would really be the best power forward in the league.
Michael Redd is thought of as a one-dimensional player, but he can also drive in and score on occasin. He is also a deadly scorer, and will drain threes on you all day if you don't put a couple of hands in his face.
10. Ray Allen, Celtics
Ray Allen is one of the best shooters of all time and could beat Reggie Miller's record if he continues to play for a couple more years.
9. Vince Carter, Nets
Vinsanity used to be better, but even when he is older and not as athletic, VC is still a scoring machine and can play good defense when he wants.
8. Rip Hamilton, Pistons
Rip is an all around player, and he has possibly the best mid-range jumpshot in the league.
7. Jason Richardson, Bobcats
J-Rich isn't talked about much since he is on the Bobcats, but he is on of the best shooting guards in the league. He is a deadly three-point shooter and one of the best dunkers of all time.
6. Brandon Roy, Blazers
Will be higher on the list once he gets older, but for now he is one of the best shooting guard's and a young contender for MVP.
5. Joe Johnson, Hawks
Joe Johnson has made himself a little more known with his performance against the Celtics in the first round of the playoffs. He is like a very, very poor man's Kobe Bryant.
4. Manu Ginobili, Spurs
The Flopper-King is a very multi-talented player. He can shoot and drive, and he is the best flopper in the league.
3. Tracy McGrady, Rockets
If it wasn't for injuried and his inability to get out of the first round, T-Mac might be considered one of the best ever.
2. Dwyane Wade, Heat
When healthy D-Wade is a very talented player. He is quick and can score and get to the line easily.
1. Kobe Bryant, Lakers
Best player in the league = best at whatever position he plays.
Not nearly as good as he was before, Wallace is still in the top 10 (unless I forgot someone)
9. Zydrunas Illgauskas, Cavaliers
He has been hampered by foot problems his whole career, but he is still one of the best big men in the league.
8. Andrew Bogut, Bucks
He signed a huge contract this offseason, hopefully he plays up to it.
7. Tyson Chandler, Hornets
He wouldn't be very good without Chris Paul, but since he has Paul he is ranked #7.
6. Shaquille O'Neal, Suns
A shadow of what he once was, Shaq is still one of the premier centers in the league even though he isn't very good. He should be even worse this season and Chandler will probably move ahead of his on the list. Bogut might also.
5. Marcus Camby, Clippers
The former defensive player of the year, Camby was blindsighted in a trade which sent him to the Clippers for a taco.
4. Greg Oden, Blazers
He hasn't even played a game in the NBA, but since there aren't a lot of great centers anymore he is high up on the list based on potential.
3. Andrew Bynum, Lakers
I think that by the end of the season Bynum will be the #2 or #1 center in the league, but even coming off an injury I think he is the 3rd best center in the league.
2. Yao Ming, Rockets
He's good, but he is injury prone and soft. He should have better stats for someone that is 7-6 and has good mobility.
1. Dwight Howard, Magic
Dwight Howard is obviously the best center to everyone other than the Chinese.
This list is really weak, so if I forgot someone please tell me. P.S. Don't say Tim Duncan, Rasheed Wallace, Amare Stoudemire, or Pau Gasol.
Jose Calderon made himself known as one of the premier point guards last season. He was one of the league leaders in assists and scored some points for the Raptors. He is a skilled player and is an important part of the Raptors.
9. Tony Parker, Spurs
Tony Parker is one of the fastest guards in the NBA, and was Finals MVP a year ago. He isn't a pure point guard and isn't a great shooter, but he can score and helps his team win. He can also be a decent playmakers sometimes.
8. Chauncey Billups, Pistons
Mr. Big Shot is known for making clutch shots in Detroit. He is older now, but he is still an elite point guard. He is a great 3-point shooter and can play good defense and gets his teammates involved.
7. Gilbert Arenas, Wizards
Agent 0 is more of a short shooting guard, but since he plays point guard i will put him in the point guard rankings. He is a great shooter, but takes a lot of stupid shots and doesn't get his teammates involved.
6. Jason Kidd, Mavericks
Jason Kidd will be known as one of the greatest ever and is a lock for the hall of fame, but right now he is in his mid-30's and is not nearly as good as he used to be. He can still run an offense good and play some defense, but he is torched by quick guards and he can't shoot very well.
5. Baron Davis, Clippers
B-Diddy is known as the strongest point guard in the league and has a good inside game for a point guard. He is more of a shooter than a passer, but he still gets over 8 assists per game. He is also one of the best shooting point guards.
4. Steve Nash, Suns
Nash was the league leader in assists in the 2 season before this season, but now Chris Paul has taken the assist title and Nash won't be able to get it back with Shaq on his team.
3. Allen Iverson, Nuggets
Iverson used to be arguably the best player in the leauge, but now he is older and not as good. He is a good shooter and has some of the best ball handling in the league, but he isn't a pure point guard and doesn't play defense.
2. Deron Williams, Jazz
Deron Williams is another obvious choice in the rankings. He was near the top of the league in assists last season. He is a lot stronger than Paul and is a better shooter, but he isn't as quick and doesn't score as much.
1. Chris Paul, Hornets
Chris Paul is the easy choice her because he led the league in assists last year, while averaging over 20 ppg. He is still young and has plenty of room to grow. If he could become a better shooter than he would be extremely hard to guard and would have a chance to become one of the all-time greats.
This is my pre-preseason edition of The MVP Race. I will also make a preseason/ training camp edition.
1. Kobe Bryant, Lakers
In my really early offseason edition I had Kobe ranked 3rd, but since he is the reigning MVP and his team is the favorites to win the NBA title I will put Kobe at #1...for now. Kobe is still the best player in the league, so he always has a chance for the MVP.
2. Lebron James, Cavaliers
Lebron will be in the MVP discussion for the next decade, so he has plenty of time to win it. That definitely won't take away from his chances this season, because the media loves him and won't discriminate against him like they do to Kobe.
3. Chris Paul, Hornets
Chris Paul got 2nd last year, but many people think he got robbed. Kobe Bryant's Lakers had the better record so I think that is why he won it. And anyway Kobe has been robbed of the MVP plenty of times before.
4. Dwyane Wade, Heat
The Heat will probably be back in the playoffs this season, so that should make Dwyane Wade a strong MVP contender. He was the reason that the Heat won the title in 2006, and when healthy is one of the top 5 players in the league.
5. Brandon Roy, Blazers
Rip City is back, and Roy is the main reason why. If the Blazers can get an upper seed in the West then Roy will be one of the frontrunners for MVP.
6. Dwight Howard, Magic
Howard is definitely the best center in the league, and if he could get a better post game he would become possibly the best big man in the league and would be able to score a lot more points.
7. Chris Bosh, Raptors
If the Raptors can become a powerhouse in the East then Bosh could finally get some credit for being one of the best big men in the game. But if Jermaine O'Neal returns to allstar form then that could ruin his MVP chances.
8. Deron Williams, Jazz
D-Will is definitely the 2nd best point guard in the league, but having 2 other allstars on his team could hurt his chances of getting the MVP. But if the Jazz are the top team in the West and he is the definite reason why then he could win the MVP.
9. Paul Pierce, Celtics
After winning Finals MVP, people have made it clear that they think Pierce is the leader of the Celtics. Since Garnett and especially Allen are getting older and worse, Pierce will have to do more on both ends of the court which could get him a chance at the MVP.
10. Amare Stoudemire, Suns
STAT is the best scoring big man in the league right now, all he has to do is lead his team to the playoffs, get his teammates involved, and get better at defense.
High Riser of the Week: Amare Stoudemire (+11 or more)
Free Faller of the Week: Kevin Garnett, Steve Nash, Rip Hamilton (-4)
Even though there is an East vs. West all star game every year, which conference do you think would win if they put the best from each conference on a team and then they faced in a 7-game series in which the players were trying as hard as they would in the finals? First I will name the rosters and then I will make my predictions.
EAST
Starters
PG - Gilbert Arenas, Wizards
Since all the best point guards are in the West, Gilbert Arenas gets the starting spot since there isn't another superstar point guard in the East.
SG - Dwyane Wade, Heat
When healthy, Wade is without question the 2nd best shooting guard in the NBA. He led his team to the championship 2 years ago, but was injured in the 2 seasons after that. When healthy he gets the starting spot, when injured the starting spot would probably go to Joe Johnson.
SF - Lebron James, Cavaliers
Whoever doesn't have Lebron has the Eastern conference starting SF probably doesn't know basketball, or is a massive Celtics homer.
PF - Kevin Garnett, Celtics
Garnett is one of the best PF's of all time, and would clearly be the best PF in the league if it wasn't for Tim Duncan.
C - Dwight Howard, Magic
Dwight Howard is a dunking, double-double machine. He is definitely the best center in the NBA (sorry, Yao) and is still improving.
Bench
6 - Paul Pierce, Celtics
Pierce wasn't one of the superstars of the league until his team was the best in the league, and he won Finals MVP. Now he is considered by most to be the 2nd best SF in the East, and the 3rd best SF in the league.
7 - Chris Bosh, Raptors
Bosh was the starting PF in the East before Kevin Garnett was traded, now he won't have a chance to start until Garnett is retired, or he gets a lot worse. Bosh can play both power forward and center.
8 - Antawn Jamison, Wizards
Antawn Jamison was one of the only players in the league last year to average 20 and 10. He also has a good 3-point shot and can play SF, PF, or C.
9 - Joe Johnson, Hawks
In the playoffs last year, Johnson proved that he is one of the premier shooting guards in the NBA. He led the Hawks to a surprising 7th game against the Celtics.
10 - Chauncey Billups, Pistons
Billups is automatically on the roster because he is the only other all-star caliber point guard in the East.
11 - Shawn Marion, Heat
Marion is one of the best man to man defenders in the league, and even though he has an ugly shot, he is a decent shooter.
12 - Michael Redd, Bucks
If the East team needs some outside shooting then Redd is probably the best choice since Ray Allen is getting older and slower.
Coach - Pat Riley, Heat
Injury Reserves:
Richard Jefferson, Bucks
Caron Butler, Wizards
Rasheed Wallace, Pistons
Jason Richardson, Bobcats
Gerald Wallace, Bobcats
Rip Hamilton, Pistons
WEST
Starters
PG - Chris Paul, Hornets
Chris Paul is without a doubt the best point guard in the NBA. He led the league in assists last year while being the only player to average at least 20 points and 10 assists per game.
SG - Kobe Bryant, Lakers
Even the biggest Kobe-hater in the world knows that Kobe is a lock to start at shooting guard in either conference.
SF - Carmelo Anthony, Nuggets
'Melo is the 2nd best small forward in the league even though he doesn't play defense. He has a better post game and jump shot than Lebron, but isn't as good of a defender or passer, and he can't get to the basket and dunk it nearly as well.
PF - Tim Duncan, Spurs
Mr. Fundamentals is the reason for the Spurs 4 championships, and he has made himself known as the best power forward ever.
C - Yao Ming, Rockets
Trailing only Kobe Bryant and Lebron James as most popular player on the planet, Yao has made the NBA famous in China. He isn't as dominant as you would think a 7-6 player with good mobility would be, but he is still a 20 and 10 type player who would be better if he didn't get injured so much.
Bench
6 - Tracy McGrady, Rockets
Tracy McGrady could be considered one of the top players in the league if he didn't get injured so much and could make it past the first round in the playoffs. He has Kobe Bryant-like talent, but he is injured too much and isn't nearly as clutch as Kobe.
7 - Deron Williams, Jazz
Deron Williams was snubbed from the allstar team last year despite being the 2nd best point guard in the NBA. He has a better jumpshot than Chris Paul, but isn't nearly as quick so he doesn't get some of the scoring opportunites that Paul gets.
8 - Dirk Nowitzki, Mavericks
Dirk is one of the best shooting big men to ever play. He isn't really a power forward, but since he is 7-0 he can't play small forward.
9 - Amare Stoudemire, Suns
Amare is the only thing that is going right for the Suns right now. Since Nash is getting older and Marion is gone, Amare will have to really pick up the scoring load and become the leader of the team.
10 - Steve Nash, Suns
Until this past season, Nash was probably the best point guard in the NBA. He led the league in assists twice and won MVP twice.
11 - Allen Iverson, Nuggets
Iverson used to be the best player in the league, but now that he is older he is not known to be one of the best anymore. He is one of the quickest players in the league, has a good shooting range, and can even pass well too.
12 - Andrew Bynum, Lakers
This is a surprising choice for most since Pau Gasol, Baron Davis, Marcus Camby, David West, Brandon Roy, Carlos Boozer, and Tony Parker weren't selected yet. But I think that the West team needs another center since Amare and Dirk aren't centers.
Coach - Phil Jackson, Lakers
Injury Reserves:
Brandon Roy, Blazers
Carlos Boozer, Jazz
Manu Ginobili, Spurs
Ron Artest, Rockets
Pau Gasol, Lakers
David West, Hornets
PREDICTIONS:
Finals MVP:
Chris Paul beats out Kobe Bryant for Finals MVP because with so many stars on his team Paul would average 20 assists per game while Kobe's scoring would go down because of all the other stars.
Defensive Player:
With so many stars on his team, Kobe could focus on his defense and lock down whoever he wanted.
6th Man:
Since the East bench isn't nearly as good as the West bench, Paul Pierce will have to step up and do most of the bench scoring for the East, while playing the most minutes of all the bench players.
The 08-09 offseason will feature many of the NBA's best stars. Among them are Kobe Bryant, Carlos Boozer, Allen Iverson, Jason Kidd, and more. While everyone is focusing on the 2010 offseason, the 2009 offseason can also make a team go from the lottery to the playoffs with a smart signing. The Los Angeles Lakers have 5 players that could be free agents next year. Lamar Odom, Trevor Ariza, and Chris Mihm are unrestricted, while Coby Karl is restricted. Kobe Bryant has an ETO clause in his contract so he could become an unrestricted free agent if he chooses. Right now the Lakers salary is at $82,305,701. If Kobe Bryant opts out then the Lakers salary will be at $40,361,084. Since the NBA's salary cap will probably be around $62,000,000 the Lakers will have about $22,000,000 of cap room. If Kobe can get some endorsements for winning the championship (if they do) and for leading the USA team to the Gold and just being the best player in the NBA then he might do the team first thing and opt out and take a lot less money. If Kobe resigned to a 6-year deal worth 10,000,000 a year then the Laker would still have 12,000,000 dollars in cap room, and since they are one of the biggest franchises they can afford to go over the cap a bit. But they would still need to re-sign Trevor Ariza and give Bynum an extension. If Lamar Odom proved to the Lakers that he should be resigned then they could sign him for about 7,000,000 a year for 3 years with a team option on the final year. If they didn't want to do that then they could sign Ron Artest or Hedo Turkoglu for that same amount. That would still leave the Lakers with 5,000,000 in cap room, their MLE, and their Bi-annual exception. They could use the final 5,000,000 in cap room to resign Trevor Ariza, then use the 2-year MLE deal on Jason Kidd. They could also use the MLE on Mike Bibby, Jamario Moon, Ricky Davis, or Lina Kleiza. That would leave the Lakers unable to do anything more except for use their Bi-annual exception on a backup. The Lakers could have a lot of options next offseason if Kobe opts out and take less money for the good of the team, but if they win the championship then they won't need to change very much.
The Phoenix Suns traded away their chances of competing when they trade Shawn Marion. Now that the Suns are out of contention they should show Steve Nash some respect and trade him to a contender so he can compete for a ring. The Lakers, Celtics, Pistons, Cavaliers, and Rockets would all want Steve Nash. But the Celtics don't have anybody to trade for Nash since the salaries wouldn't work without them giving up a member of the Big 3. Cleveland doesn't have any young talent that the Suns would want. The Rockets could offer Shane Battier and Rafer Alston, but Battier's contract is 3 years long and they wouldn't want to have that on the books in 2010. So that leaves the Lakers and the Pistons. The Pistons could offer Rip Hamilton and Rodney Stuckey if they were willing to part with both of them for Nash. Thats the only good deal since the Suns wouldn't want Rasheed Wallace, and they wouldn't want Tayshaun or Chauncey's long contracts. The Lakers could offer Lamar Odom and Jordan Farmar for Steve Nash and Grant Hill which would give the Suns a young point guard and a big expiring contract. They could also trade Odom, Farmar, and Radmanovic for Nash and Diaw. Both of those trades work accoring to ESPN Trade Machine. But the only way for them to happen would be for Steve Kerr to accept that they are going nowhere and to give Steve Nash the respect he deserves.
This trade gives the Lakers some bigs, and it gives them a lot of expiring contracts so that they will be able to pay Bynum next offseason. This trade makes the Cavaliers the 1st or 2nd best team in the East. It gives the Knicks some young talent and salary relief. This trade helps set the Nets up so that they can try and get Lebron in 2010.
I am a die-hard Lakers fan. I write a lot of blogs for foxsports. I know a lot of stuff about basketball and have been named "The Basketball Oracle" by my family because of my basketball knowledge. I'm a huge Kobe Bryant fan and think he is the best in the game today. L.A. Lakers - 08-09 NBA Champs!!!
