Are Star White Athlete's Treated Better by the Media than Star Black Athletes
Apr 07, 2008 | 6:27AM | report this

Let's face it. The Media looooooooooves Tyler Hansbrough. And why shouldn't they. 23 points a game. 10 rebounds a game. 4 offensive rebounds a game. Draws a lot of chargers. National Player of the Year(pretty much all of them). But some say he gets all this treatment because he's white and if say.......Beasley was white he'd be National Player of the Year and the Media would love him.

Jake Long is a 6-7 300 pound beast. He's the best offensive linemen in Michigan history. One of the best in Big Ten11 history. Jake Long has been getting a lot of attention on NFL.com draft section. He has around 7-8 videos about him. I think it's because he's the best OT in the draft. Some say it's cause he's white. And lets say uh........a certain one of these guys isn't because he's black.(can you guess which one it is)

Chris Long is a monster, soldier, a whole army. But he's getting loads of attention that some say..............Vernon Gholston might deserve.

Tebow wins the heisman. McFadden doesn't. One annoncer describes him as "a guy you'd want to marry your daughter."

Here are some responses I've gotten.

Yes, sadly in this day and age it is true I mean consider how Barry Bonds has been treated in the steroids affair and how Roger Clemens is being treated. Seriously, Clemens had some on field issues i.e. throwing the bat at Piazza which you can't say of Bonds. Another example is when Ben Roethelsberger got hurt riding a motorcycle as did Kellen Winslow how was that handled? There are several are many examples of similar behavior being treated much differently. Too much to mention here maybe if I was getting a degree in sociology or communications I might have good subject matter for a dissertation. ``````````````````````````````````````````````````
``````````````````````````````````````````````````
```````````````` Yes they do, The media is waiting for a black players to screw up, act stupid, or join the slappaho tribe. ``````````````````````````````````````````````````
``````````````````````````````````````````````````
`````````````````` Of course they are. Tyler Hansborough get all this attention not just because he is good but because he is good and white. Not to many talented white players coming out of college, when there is one than of course he is going to draw attention. Same for football especially when it's not the QB position. I think since there isn't a lot coming out it's more impressive to the media when one does have the talent. ``````````````````````````````````````````````````
``````````````````````````````````````````````````
``````````````````````` Yea, hust look at the Leinhart story. It's treated as a boys will be boys. If he was black it would be viewed as a...well how the vikings were treated after their cruise. ``````````````````````````````````````````````````
``````````````````````````````````````````````````
`````````````````````````  No i think they're treated the same but on who you think is better is partly wrong. McFadden is FAR better at RB than Tebow is at QB McFadden has been cheated out of Hiesman for two straight years, you could ask the LSU Tigers who was a bigger threat! B-Ez is easily better than Tyler, he has better stats & if you compare UNC's talent not counting Hansborough to K-State's talent not counting Beasley, B-Ez elevated his team's gameplay far more than Tyler did with UNC. Take Tyler from UNC & their still a top 10 team, take Michael Beasley from K-State & they don't even make the NIT let alone the tourney.

But no doubt Jake Long is the best O-lineman in the draft & Chris Long>Vernon. ``````````````````````````````````````````````````
``````````````````````````````````````````````````
````````````````````` Thats a load of ####. ``````````````````````````````````````````````````
``````````````````````````````````````````````````
```````````````````` I think they're treated equally. Some black athletes (Henry, Vick, Pacman) give the rest a bad name with the media. They don't understand that they can't live the #### lifestyle anymore, with all the people watching them like they do. The media reports on whatever stories it gets, about any athlete, black or white. Look at Leinar story. He was partying with some girls, and it became a story. If he was doing something illegal, then he'd be in the same boat as Pacman or Henry. It's the choices that the athletes make that gives them the type of media attention they receive ``````````````````````````````````````````````````
``````````````````````````````````````````````````
`````````````````````` Yes.. sad, but true Hun. The Black players have to be near Perfect in everything off the field.. the white player does not... #### Bu*t, but thats why theyre called the Minority, because everything is unfortunately control by us, if it were reversed, im sure yould see alot of Matt Leinart, Tom Brady having a baby out of wedlock, if that were Donovan Mcnabb who knocked sum chic up then broke up with her, i dont think it would have been forgotten quite so fast, Jeremy Shockey, and Bill Walton, when he was in college acting like idiots. ``````````````````````````````````````````````````
``````````````````````````````````````````````````
``````````````````` Yes..look at Barry Bonds and Mark McGuire. I think Peyton Manning mooned somebody in college ``````````````````````````````````````````````````
``````````````````````````````````````````````````
````````````````````` Just the nature of the question #### me off. ``````````````````````````````````````````````````
``````````````````````````````````````````````````
`````````````````````` BY THE WAY i didn't write that cowboys song.

To put Hansbrough into context, take a look at Michigan RB Mike Hart. He was also adored (rightfully so, I might add) by the media for his intelligence and work ethic. Now he's taking some gentle hits from people "saying "nice college career, but no way you survive in the Sunday league. . . "

That's pretty similar to the Hansbrough situation.

All in all, I'd say we're largely past the days when Magic Johnson was praised for his natural ability while Larry Bird was considered a hard worker.

I have to agree with Moriello on his point. One of the best examples of race not being relevant is the golf headline on any given Monday. Tiger Woods will be in that headline, whether he wins, or finishes 7th.

I think Long gets more attention than Ghoulston because he stops the run better and can get after the QB- Vernon is more one deminsional A great pass rusher but not the greatest against the run and some of these points a good but I really don't think racisism is the factor

I can't speak to the rest of the players in the article.... but Chris Long gets a lot of press not just because he's a pretty good player, but also because his dad was too.
..and Howie SEES that his son gets noticed.

..as far as Tiger goes... most casual golf fans CARE where Tiger finished up. Whether it's first or fifty-first.... we want to know.... so they tell us.

other than that..... HI

It's not only about race but also perception when it comes to the subject matter. McFadden twice a runner up in the Heisman trophy ballot candidacy. Now they're railin' on the guy with regard to his off the field problems. Long is perceived as a great player which he no doubt is on the college level. But as to how it'll equate in the NFL is another thing.
What you ought to be concerned with is the prejudices shown by the press.
That's where much of the inherent bias starts out in this context. Once there's a solution to that problem then and only then can we see the players for what they are not what some journalist perceives them to be. Now don't get me wrong there are players out there deserving of some scorn because of their itinerant behavior. But at the end of the day don't put too much merit in what the journalists say or do and just make your own appreciative judgement on a player and what you observe in him.

my point is race should not be a factor .... the biggest bigotry is the media turning the cheek on vince young ... this guy is going backwards ... and the media still stands behind him ...you dont score 11 on the wonderlick and then able to read defenses ...this is a make or break year for young... his stats are terrible ...white or black would be benched or out of the league ... people better get off the race card obama could be president and i think a fair one , who wont judge by the skin color ....

this is a subject mired with taboo. no matter where you stand, you will be questioned. You have a point but it will be looked at as a disgruntled black man saying it and no one knows what you are. racism is something most can't undrdstand because they haven't felt it or seen it for themselves but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. yeah, there is a bias out there. Barry can't get a job with no real proof while Clemens get asked all the time is he pitching this year and they have everything but the needle sticking out of hi a*&.

It's not fair but it will not change because white America won't admitt it exist.

This is a difficult subject, because in order to address it, you have to put it into the question. I can't speak to the basketball kids. No clue there. But right now, the Longs look better than Clady or Gholston because they're both more multidimensional as players. I don't pretend to understand why Run DMC didn't win the Heisman, but it sure didn't hurt his draft value or help Tebow's... whenever that comes up. Who knows what committies are looking for?
I think that assuming racism is a horrible mistake. It creates a victimization cycle that's hard to break from and harder to defend yourself against. If there is still a heavy press skew, it would largely be because people are still willing to believe it, look for it, and make it important, and that's sad.

true blue...you bring up some pretty good points. But I have to agree with tophatal about mcfadden. his off the field issues kept him from winning the heismann. (of course I would say that being a gator fan!) along with that, the trophy should be awarded AFTER all the bowl games are over since your wolverines outplayed my gators...

blueorange...your comment sounds like you think tiger and michael don't deserve the praise they receive??? they have nothing but DOMINATED and REDEFINED their sport.

anyone can come up with player comparisons and call race an issue. You have to look at the questioned players and situations in context. You have two examples in the comments you received. Kellen Winslow and Ben Roethlesberger. INjured in motorcycle accidents. Big Ben doesn't take too much flack and Winslow does. Difference...Roethlesberger didn't come out of college hailing himself as the greatest player in the world making a fool of himself unlike Kellen Winslow. Perception on anything he does is automatically skewed...not because he is black...but because he is an ####. Matt Leinart is photographed at a party at his home in which he is seen hot-tubbing with a variety of young ladies. No reports of indecent behavior aside from their method of indulging the alcohol (which really isn't bad for 20's type behavior...OK...early 20's) and as far as we know the girls were all over 18 years of age. The Vikings "Love Boat" cruise on the other hand didn't sail as smoothly. Strippers and hookers (brought in from other states) and #### sex going on NOT in the privacy of a stateroom but in the wide open spaces and inappropraite touching of employees of cruise line. Difference isn't in black and white...it's in common sense and acceptable behavior. Leinart has taken some heat but he really didn't break any laws (morally...tough call) whereas the Vikings did (morally...no question). There is the difference in a lot of this stuff. Context!!!!!!!!!!

blue@orange makes a great point about Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan. Jordan was having an affair and he was STILL treated like royalty by the media. How in the world could his wife ever complain with everything he provided for her? And I, like probably everyone else, haven't heard of a down side to Woods except to say that he can be a bit surly at times. Better watch out Tiger, they'll be comparing you to Barry Bonds soon.

I could answer your post by simply saying ... duh.

Haven't seen enough of Beasley to compare to Tyler. As it is, the kid deserves his props.

Bonds is not disliked because he's black. OK, maybe a little. Heis mostly disliked because he's an ####!
Clemens is becoming a bonafide #### so let's see what happens later.
Still, do you remember when Montana got Superbowl MVP and went to Disneyland and got mucho endorsements? Jerry Rice got MVP and got squat! Still, Rice is not very eloquent. So, was it because he's black or ineloquent?

PoetryMan - simple connection between "surly" and Bonds removes the question of race in my comment.

Yes, I think it is somewhat a factor. Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan are mentioned, rightfully so, as a counterpoint. But both of those superstars have worked very hard on presenting a clean public image. Jordan did take some criticism for his gambling and the marital problems he had. But - all things being equal - it would seem that mainstream media tends to jump to a conclusion quicker in the black vs. white arena.

White atheletes may get a break as far as character and work ethic goes. Which is ridiculous. There are probably more black atheletes in trouble simply because there are more black atheletes.

But not when it comes to precicting success in the NBA. A white athelete has to be really really good before the media types don't say the "but will his game translate to the NBA?" You hear that more about the white atheletes than the black ones. I think it is a continuation of the old white men can't jump sterotype.

ramlgriff, you make a good point. From the other viewpoint, anything you say as a white person is viewed as someone who condones racism and making excuses for it.

I would not be too quick to say Clemens is getting a better deal than Bonds. Remember that Bonds case is futher along and actual charges have been filed. But look how long that took.

And Clemens has not exactly been treated with kid gloves. Most media types indicate they believe he lied. We will have to wait to see how it all washes out as the case progresses.

Hey True Blue, Jake Long recieved Big10 best OL of the year...last year! Joe Thomas's last year! Long recieved the award, not Thomas, and Thomas still went 3rd in the draft. Long is the real deal Holyfield, and it aint cuz hes white...

I hear what you mean though. I noticed it big time with Hansborough, he doesnt look like the player of the year, but his play AND his stats back it up...Beasley, who will be drafted higher and probably be a better pro, has a few knocks; his team isnt the Tar Heels, but liitle known K-St. and he only stayed a year, while Hans stayed for 3 years. Thats why the NCAA B-ball media loves him, he didnt run off...

As for race, you may have a point, but like Tophatal said, make your own judgements. ESPN for instance is so unbelievably biased, you just gotta figure thigns otu for yourself...take what they say with a grain of salt, then form your own opinion.

For instance:
I, like you, cant compare Chris Long vs. V. Gholston cuz I havetn seen Long play...but I have seen Gholston, hes the only player Jake Long gave up a sack to all year, so I like Gholston over Long, who is being rated so highly cuz of who his dad is...but I might be wrong.

goog blog though, good discussions

ABOUT ME

True0Blue0And0Maize
Love Michigan football. Carolina Panthers. UNC Basketball. Detroit Tigers/Red Sox. Actually I'm not a Tiger guy. My parents love them but my uncle(who i was close with) gave me a Sox hat for my 6th B-day. When I saw MY hat on TV. I guess that was the moment. I'd like to see more successful Tiger seasons but at least I've got the Red Sox to cheer me up(although they don't look too good). I guess my story is Born in Michigan moved to North Carolina at 13 and saw first ever home panthers game. I loved them for some reason.
