food for thought: Looking forward to the NFL 08' Draft
Nov 08, 2007 | 8:17PM | report this
Looking ahead to the NFL draft, its like christmas for me .. really next to the superbowl and the divisional championship games there is not a single NFL event I watch more intently.
Assuming that the 5 worst teams well… will keep on loosing what would your picks look like? This is what I foresee even before the bowl games and combines…

1.) Rams Jake Long Michigan OT Comparable to: Joe Thomas
Of all there problems (and there is plenty) the offense line of the Rams has been the worse. It is odd to see a lineman taken 1st overall but this is a major need with the status of a number starting lineman like Orlando Pace up in the air plus, there is (to me) not a good enough Defensive player to go 1st overall.

2.) Dolphins Glenn Dorsey LSU DT Comparable to: Warren Sapp
This guy can be the centerpiece of any defense and the Dolphins could use nearly anything on Defense. Currently, he led the LSU tigers amazing defense, which has yielded the fewest points. Dorsey can greatly improve the ‘Phins defense and keep O’linemen out of the secondary.

3.) Jets Calais Campbell Miami DE Comparable to: Mario Williams
Well, he may not be has polished as his contemporary upper classman Chris Long, he defiantly has the upside. So far the Jets have 9 sacks that is 29th in the league and it safe to say there defensive is in a sad state of affairs. Were some will claim that sacks are a meaningless statistic I would reply but pressure and field position aren’t so I think that the Jets would be wise to take Campbell whose length and speed on the edge will greatly improve there defense.

4.) Patriots* DeSean Jackson California WR Comparable to: Lee Evans
Hear me out; first off do to the trade to get this pick it is just plain highway robbery. Second it is unknown how much longer Randy Moss will be with the Patriots in the long run. Jackson would be the perfect insurance policy in case Randy wants more money when the pats win enough super bowls to make everyone physically sick.

5.) Falcons Andre Woodson Kentucky QB Comparable to: Donovan McNabb
The Falcons need a QB and it depends on who there sweet on Ryan or Woodson, I probable go Woodson though he has a powerful arm and impressive vision on the field.
He is mainly a pocket passer, which may fit the Falcons new system. He has a NFL legit deep ball and has tremendous poise.

*= acquired form 49ers

Rounding up the top 10...
Raiders -Darren McFadden -RB -Arkansas
Bengals -Chris Long -DE -Virginia
Cardinals -Derrick Harvey -DE/LB -Florida
Bears -Matt Ryan -QB -BC
Vikings -Brian Brohm -QB -Louisville

I gotta say, this isn't a bad Draft prediction. Way too early to make real predictions, but this is real food for thought.

Glenn Dorsey is a lock for the Dolphins, no question. I can see Brian Brohm fitting in Minnesota, and there's no doubt that Atlanta will take a very hard look at him. But between the two, Woodson is a much more exciting player and exciting is what the Falcons need right now. If DeSean Jackson is waiting for the Falcons, they will pick him up. They won't pass on him, despite the quarterback need.

I predict the Pats will get McFadden with the Niners' pick. With Maroney's durability in question, it's a no-brainer. The Falcons get Brian Brohm and reunite him with Bobby Petrino. Then the Raiders make Chris Long a second-generation Raider.

Yes. Very funny....the Dolphins could use anything on defense. I agree Glenn Dorsey would be great. Zach Thomas might retire after this year but the defense is still horrible. So the Fins need to start building their defense through the draft.

I sure hope John Beck works out.

CollegeFan, thanks... I know it is a tad early but thats why I only did top 5 in depth because more than likely those teams will be in those relative spots at the end of the year. But, it doesnt hurt to dream faintly about next year.

Jon_464, I think the Pat's could do a number of things with this pick. First, they could trade out and pick up a later pick and a second round pick, they could draft McFadden as you have suggested (which is a great pick), or they could draft the most athletically gifted player * in the draft in Jackson.
Though Brohm to the Falcons would make sense he is third behind Woodson and Ryan on top QB's. Sort of the Lienart scenerio in the 06' draft with the Titans skipping him over for Young. As for Long, they could draft and he is worthy of being picked at 6th but I think they go Offense and pick the highest rated Qb or RB left on the board.
(* denotes Jackson sub 4.3 40 yd dash)

rockDolFan, my apology of course .
I think the 'phins have a alright Offense though they could always pick a WR at this pick with the departure of Chambers. The defense on the other hand only really has one defender and that is Jason Taylor whom they may trade to pick up more picks. Dorsey is a darkhorse Hiesman Candidate mainly because he plays defense but this guys impact is un-mistakeable.

THe won't go for a WR. Even if they lose Randy- unless of course they lose the SB. Then they will keep up with the offensive moves. But I think they will do another draft on defense. BB's spending habits revolve on defense- Asante Samuel is up in the air next year, and the LB's are !!old, as much as I hate to admit it. But getting young guys to learn from Bruschi, Vrabel and Co is what they need to keep that defense a wall.

2coastgal, it is true that Bill typically goes defensively in drafts but there is no defender to draft this high with the exception of Dorsey who will already be off the board. Stallworth and Welker are good wideouts but they arent #1 WR.
They could trade down to get Kenny Phillips, Derrick Harvey, or Laurinaitis because they arent 4th overall material.. no offense.

I agree with the highest rated RB left on the board, but they won't go QB. Going with the highest rated QB with pick number 6 would be the stupidest move they could make. They drafted Russel first last year, drafting another QB in the first round would make no sense at all.
