Marv Levy: A return to the Bills – and quoting greatness.
Jan 07, 2006 | 12:30PM | report this

All of Bills nations is buzzing this week – or gasping depending on who you ask – with the announcement of the return of Marv Levy as GM. Hopefully, he will right the sinking ship that is once again the Buffalo Bills.

But it's not Marv’s steadfast character, praised by all. Nor is it his football acumen, also widely praised by fellow coaches, players and commentators alike. No. It's more than that.

It's his quotes.

You have to understand, since Marv retired as the winningest coach in Bills’ history, (112-70 regular season record and 11-8 in the playoffs), things have been dire. Not just on the field, but at the podium. Somehow, “We didn’t get it done today” after another loss can’t inspire the troops quite like "Adversity is an opportunity for heroism."

Of course, quotes don't win games though all by themselves. Talent, coaching and will have a lot do with it too. "Systems don't win, players do." And Levy had players:

Jim Kelly, Andre Reed, Bruce Smith, Thurman Thomas, Kent Hull, Darryl Talley, Jim Ritcher, Pete Metzelaars, Will Wolford, Fred Smerlas, Mark Kelso, Mark Pike, Steve Tasker, Shane Conlan, Cornelius Bennett, Howard Ballard, Phil Hansen, Don Beebe, James Lofton, Glenn Parker, John Fina, Chris Mohr, Steve Christie and Chris Spielman.

In his press conference this week, Marv had to answer the obvious questions about his age. Could he handle it? Has the game passed him by? Will you have new quotes? First off, the guy runs three miles a day. I don't even walk a mile in a month. As far as being out of touch, he's been broadcasting NFL games and writing columns for the NFL since he left coaching.

He acknowledged that free agency was just coming into its own when he left and that it's a different game now, allowing you to build a winner much sooner. Out of touch? Never heard anyone from the team acknowledge that about free agency before. Relax Bills nation: he's in touch.

You can tell by the enthusiasm in his voice. Regardless, he's not coaching anyway, so this shouldn't even be an issue. The bigger question though is, will he come up with new quotes?

Timeout.

When you have classics like “Where else would you rather be than right here, right now.” you don’t need anything new. The classics transcend time:

“They’re killing me Whitey.”

"Let's matriculate the ball down the field, boys."

“This is the NFL, which stands for ‘Not For Long’ if you keep making calls like that.”

“Win one for The Gipper.”

"Nobody circles the wagons like the Buffalo Bills.”

Holy-ghost-of-Lombardi Batman, I have goosebumps.

So Marv returns to a 5-11 mess that Ralph Wilson currently has on his hands. A failed effort by Pittsburgh’s former GM Tom Donahoe over the past five years has left this team no better off, save for a relief of its previous salary cap troubles.

For Ralph, this may be the last chance at getting that elusive ring. One of the few surviving original AFL owners, this is a ‘must-win’ for the organization. Levy might view it differently though: "World War II was a must win."

Marv is also fond of focusing on a single element that is the most important thing a person can do to be successful, then going out and doing that one thing. In this case, it’s a pretty big thing. One of his biggest challenges will be to fix an offensive line, which, no pun intended, has been offensive in its play all year.

Holding penalties. False starts. Inconsistent run and pass protection, giving up 43 sacks this year. Not horrible when compared to Indy with the lowest at 20, or the Texans with the highest at 68.

However, it’s horrible when this team was 9-7 going into this year with a sense of hope in the form of a new QB, J.P. Losman and a commitment to the running game with Willis MaGahee, self-proclaimed “best back in the league.’ Another timeout. Attention Willis, you're name is in the same post as Thurman Thomas, and he just might have something to say about that.

But what would Marv say about that? "What you do should speak so loudly that no one will hear what you say." Read that one again Willis. It’s a much more elegant way of saying put up or shut up. Levy had the good fortune to have worked with players that would have never have said that, much less deflect blame for their own troubles away from themselves.

That’s because in addition to being a quote guy, he’s a character guy first. Nothing is more important to him – including quotes and special teams.

He also takes over a team that has an abysmal record away from home. 1- 7. He believes you need to win all your road games and half your home games to be successful. That’s not sexy enough though. Try this one on for size: "You know why #### lost the war?" Levy had asked his players. "He couldn't win on the road."

Oh my! Hank Stram, clean-up on aisle six because the mustard is on the floor people! You can’t coach a line like that.

Levy’s next task will be to helm this team through the draft and free agency during the off-season. "Great football coaches have the vision to see, the faith to believe, the courage to do... and 25 great players." Consider that list above again sports fans – this guy knows talent.

He also faces a challenge in bringing in a new coaching staff in to work with Mike Malarkey, a 14-18 coach going into year 3 of a five-year deal. You have to believe that Malarkey is thanking the football gods this week that he dodged a hail of bullets. Especially after watching the coaching-change bloodbath last Monday.

That he’ll do it with an over-confident yet unproven J.P. Losman as his starting QB speaks more to Levy’s character than it does anything else. He is on record as giving his full support to both coach and player. "Expect rejection, but expect even more strongly to overcome it." Considering he once worked with a cocky Jim Kelly, this may turn out ok.

Welcome back Marv. I can rest a little easier this offseason, and hopefully enjoy the draft this year – not dread it. All I can say to you as you face these new challenges and return the team to football and quoting glory is this: "If you have everything prepared, the rest will take care of itself."

Is it wrong to quote a legend to himself? Not if you "Plan your work and work your plan."

And right now, my plan is to see ya.

I really ticked off a lot of Buffalo fans with my mock draft last year. I pointed out their safeties are old, which they are. Boy, did they get upset.

Marv was probably inspired by Gibbs, don't you think? I agree that he is a great quote machine.

The team is not in terrible shape, and to their credit they play in a bad division. If I was handicapping the East next year, I would put NE first on experience, MIA second on drive, BUF third until they prove me wrong and NYJ fourth until they hire a coach.

Honestly, the draft could change all of that. Mularkey stepping down shocked me tonight. Who is your favorite for new head coach?

The Raiders just interviewed James Lofton by the way.

Lot of people mentioning Ted Cotrell. He was fired when Donahoe came on as GM. Now that the Pittsburgh connection of Mularkey and he are gone, rumors abound that Levy will bring back Ted as coach.

News conference today at 11:oo am should square that away, buffalobills.com . If I had to guess, I'd like it, but Ted still has to be bitter for being passed over as coach five years ago, when he, John Fox and Marvin Lewis all came in. But Greg Williams came out of left field with a'really good interview' – always a good criteria for coaching success.

The problem is, everyone's tempted to go offensive line in the draft, but the trouble is, everyone is still reeling from the last draft where we took Mike Williams, and he's turned out to be less than advertised.

By some miracle, if Bush fell to us? I'd say take him and package McGahee in a trade.

First of all, Bush will fall to the Bills when ice skating moves to the Summer Olympics. LenDale White maybe. He actually might be a better pure rusher anyway.

I understand the O-line thing, but my theory would be to constantly move down a few slots & stockpile picks in the process. Then I would just throw darts at guys hoping to get lucky. There is really only so much scouting you can do. I am hoping Gallery works into a LT for Oakland because that is a huge problem area. The line here is basically 7 mediocre guys.

Ted probably will not hold a grudge. He seems to be like the kind of guy who is a pro. I also could envision him getting the job. Time will tell. By the time Al Davis makes a decision, all the good candidates will be gone, I know that.
