Ok, so the format for 2008 in my points will be changing. Last year I used purely the F1 style where only the top 8 score points and, low and behold, Jimmie Johnson managed to overhaul Jeff Gordon in the TNRC despite me not using a Chase format for it. He also won the Qualifying title too so, while the debate will linger within NASCAR fans about how a brilliant season by Gordon went unrewarded, the fact is that's motorsport; we love it because it's unpredictable.
Anyway, 2008...and here are the changes:
Out - F1 points system, no Chase for TNRC, two bonus points per pole at start of Chase in TNQC, two bonus points to the leader of the TNQC after round 26.
In - V8 Supercar points system for regular season, Chase for both titles, CART points system for both Chases, four bonus points per win/pole at Chase start, four bonus points to the leader per race/qualifying that he 'wrapped' up the regular season with (ie; if the rest can't catch him with one race to go, he gets 4 points, two races would be 8 and so on).
So let's have a look at these points systems so you guys and girls will actually have a clue of what I'm using. The V8 Supercars changed their points a couple years ago to reward the top 17 finishers in every race instead of scoring points for everyone. The benfit of this has seen the last two Championships go right down to the final laps of the final race instead of someone wrapping up the title with a handful of races remaining. They also weigh the points depending on the weekend format; you win one 30 lap sprint race and you get less points than if you win an endurance race.
This is how the points system goes for a sprint race:
And this is how I'm going to weigh them; those races that have a scheduled distance significantly less than 'normal', I'm halving the points. That means Martinsville and Bristol for a start and I'll have to see if there are any others. I'll be keeping the 75% threshold for rain-affected races however...if we get between 50% and 75% then only half points will be given as well.
For the Chase, as I said, the old CART system will be put into use. That rewards all 12 drivers and I will be keeping the seperate scoring for Chase drivers and the rest like I did for the TNQC last season:
Obviously this will make much more sense...well, I hope it does anyway...once the Chase starts and we'll see how much, if at all, this shakes up the actual Sprint Cup order.
Like I said before, lets really see the best in NASCAR by having them race a heat race to get in the show. No more taping up the front ends so you can get a pole and on race day go to the back, cause your car is no good. lol
Last night I got to see the V8 season review show, I can't think whats his name that won the championship, but the crew new when to bring him in for the last pit stop, cause everytime he just came out infront of the leader to stay in front.
Now for those who don't get to see the V8Supercar, They really get to rub bumpers, doors you name it and rubbing his racing. Yes they are road courses but when two race cars can fit in the trun they try it alot. I really think it is more exciting then alot of the NASCAR races.
cheers.
Yep, but our races are shorter than the Cup ones so we have a compulsory pitstop during all sprint races. Usually, for a 30 lapper, the window is between lap 5 and 20 or something. You pit outside of that and it doesn't count so you get DQ'd I think. Can't imagine NASCAR doing that....though I do think they need to restrict the sets of tyres you get each race.
Right on with Tander's pitcrew...he went from 5th to 1st in race 1 of the last round and that was the reson he ended up winning the title.
Points points points, Oh did I say you made a good POINT. I agree the current point system is flawed bad. I think your idea of a points system is good, with the exception of daytona. Since every one and everything trys to race there. You get alot of one and done teams. But hey anything is better than Brian Frances ideas..lol.
Tez- ok! I think I get it...lets see how it plays out. My hubby has always been one voting for qualifying heats in NASCAR, run several 20 lappers and then shorten the main event by a bunch.
Tez, since I just started reading this website last summer, I didn't really follow your blogs with the modified points. So now that we're starting a new season fresh, and you just clarified your system, I can follow in 2008.
You have an interesting theory there about awarding lesser points for shorter events. Not so sure this would work with the "official" NASCAR system (there's enought complaints about the current system already) and would cause additional confusion to alot of the fans.
lol, I don't think there's any way to get rid of those 'one race wonder' teams, noah. The only thing would be to have franchises but I doubt that will happen for a long time. As far as points go, I'm for rewarding the top guys...I don't see any reason for handing out points to the guy who finishes 43rd and doesn't even complete 1 racing lap. Make the battle for the final few points paying positions something worthy to watch in the waning laps when the leader has checked out, lol
I'd love to see NASCAR do something like they do in F1 with their qualifying format (so does Dave if his comments about how well it works is anything to go by) by having a knockout style thing. But, the idea of some 20 lappers to set the order has merit too, klv.
Glad to help you out a bit, Gerrel :P
I know my idea of reducing the points for the short races won't ever fly....but I don't see why you should get the same points for winning over 250 miles as someone would for 600. That doesn't make sense to me, lol
tez, I always go with your points and with JayJayDean's. Unfortunately, NASCAR doesn't! Anyway, I appreciate what you and JJD do for us because it makes it so much more fun. Thanks, vol.
My points for the season is basically the CART system with bonus points like NASCAR has now, so you won't have to guess how it would be if you used your Chase format all year long.
ta for saying you'll try to keep up with this thing...I just am curious to see how it'll go and if it is closer than the actual one. F1 wasn't really but I was surprised that Jimmie caught Jeff without a Chase...mind you, 40 points from 4 races does tend to close the gap, lol
oh yes, bring on 2008, JJD....CART system for you too eh? Dave will be happy to know we're using open-wheel points :P
photo; had to change the format to keep in line with the NASCAR saying of "if it works, change it anyway to annoy everyone", LOL!
Tez is a rare creature; an Australian who was living in New Zealand before moving to Canada. He's also a Civil Engineer who is hoping to spend his Monday to Friday sitting in front of a computer surfing the inter...uh, working hard for an Engineering Consultant or Contractor when he finds a job. His heart is torn between his two loves; F1 and NASCAR.
Due to his high interest in those, his blogs will likely focus on them with the occasional foray into sports that don't get much (if any) mention on this website. All blogs and/or comments will more than likely have his usual dollop of sarcasm and general Aussie spin on them.
Amazingly, he also managed to score 2 MiB nominations on consecutive days (August 5 & 6, 2007) after announcing he had been keeping track of them...he's considering hiding under his bed as a result.
