TNQC - Michigan
Aug 17, 2007 | 9:02PM | report this

Ok, it's official...I've decided to only do my Chase format for this Championship to see how it might stack up for 2008. If it's a success, I'll use it for both title next year but if it's a flop then I shall send it to the scrapheap next to my fridge which finally broke down yesterday (but don't worry, I bought another one...second hand too. Actually, it's one of those little bar fridges so it keeps my drinks cold, uh, everythingI put in there cold).

Now where were we this weekend? Ahh yes, Oran Park raceway is...wait, sorry, that's where the V8's are racing today and tomorrow. To Michigan then, where Kasey Kahne looked to be in control and take a further ten points out of Jeff Gordon's lead...until both Jeff and Greg Biffle ruined it and took the front row for themselves having been the final two cars out on track. Neither Ryan Newman or Dale Earnhardt Jr could manage to crack the top 8 so Jeff extends his lead out to 15 points on Ryan, with Kasey now three in front of Jr and just seven behind his fellow Dodge driver.

This is the seat the rest of the field wish Jeff would use so they can catch up to him

No points were awarded last week due to the rain so tough bikkies if you think Jeff should be further in front than he is as I don't count any washouts.

Tez's NASCAR Qualifying Championship - Standings after round 23

1 - Jeff Gordon, 77 points (6 poles)
2 - Ryan Newman, 62 points (4 poles)
3 - Kasey Kahne, 55 points (1 pole)
4 - Dale Earnhardt Jr, 52 points (1 pole)
5 - Denny Hamlin, 44 points (1 pole)
6 - Jamie McMurray, 37 points (1 pole)
7 - Kurt Busch, 35 points
8 - Jimmie Johnson, 34 points
9 - Elliot Sadler, 32 points
10 - Kyle Busch, 25 points
=11 - Tony Stewart, 20 points
=11 - Martin Truex Jr, 20 points
13 - Clint Bowyer, 19 points (1 pole)
=14 - David Gilliland, 18 points (1 pole)
=14 - Reed Sorenson, 18 points (1 pole)
=16 - Greg Biffle, 17 points
=16 - Carl Edwards, 17 points
=16 - Juan Montoya, 17 points
19 - Mark Martin, 16 points
=20 - Scott Riggs, 15 points
=20 - Ricky Rudd, 15 points
=22 - JJ Yeley, 14 points (1 pole)
=22 - Bobby Labonte, 14 points
=24 - Dave Blaney, 13 points (1 pole)
=24 - Casey Mears, 13 points (1 pole)
=24 - Jeff Burton, 13 points
=24 - David Stremme, 13 points
28 - Kevin Harvick, 11 points
29 - Robby Gordon, 8 points
=30 - Sterling Marlin, 6 points
=30 - Ken Schrader, 6 points
=30 - Kenny Wallace, 6 points
=33 - Boris Said, 5 points
=33 - Johnny Sauter, 5 points
=35 - Matt Kenseth, 4 points
=35 - Joe Nemechek, 4 points
37 - Bill Elliot, 2 points

So Jeff obviously read my last QC update and figured that Ryan was getting a little too close for comfort...15 points is a nice cushion to have (though not as good as that seat...notice the holder on the right? Perfect for the remote or a can of L&P), but so is the extra two pole positions he now has over Ryan. As I said earlier, I'll use my Chase idea but only in this championship...so let the battle to make the final 12 begin.

Ok TEZ.
As I see it, Gordon not only has the points for poles ( not polocks) won but also the lead ( comfy) for the chase.

Does this give you an idea of where this chase is heading?? Can you spell DOMINATION?? I thought the NASCAR new points system supposed to eliminate this. But alas, it has no effect on this malady.

Granted the chase drivers will all start with a 5000 point assignment as designated by their finishes but if Gordo can maintain his finishes as he does now during the chase, has NASCAR leveled the playing field yet?

mmm, I don't really mind a team dominating really; means the others have to up the tempo which is always a good thing....or maybe I'm just used to what happens in F1, lol

the Chase format is supposed to reward winning....we'll see since Jeff, Tony and Jimmie have been the only guys to win more than once this year so one of them should win the title based on that. But, Jimmie has had a shocking run (caused by us, lol) and has fallen to 8th or something while Tony has only just started to make his charge so maybe Jeff does deserve a fifth title since he's been there the whole season so far *shrugs*

Any driver who can go 10-for-10 without a DNF will dominate the Chase. If Stewart, Gordon, or Johnson DNF in the first race they will be the last place driver in the Chase, a scenario MORE likely this year than last year.

Now that I'm out of the contest I'll be rolling out my own take on the Chase in the next week or so.

Hey if qaulify gets rained out, and of course Jeff gets the pole cause of the point lead,, Dose he get that counted as a won pole award for doing nothing ??

Tez is a rare creature; an Australian who was living in New Zealand before moving to Canada. He's also a Civil Engineer who is hoping to spend his Monday to Friday sitting in front of a computer surfing the inter...uh, working hard for an Engineering Consultant or Contractor when he finds a job. His heart is torn between his two loves; F1 and NASCAR. Due to his high interest in those, his blogs will likely focus on them with the occasional foray into sports that don't get much (if any) mention on this website. All blogs and/or comments will more than likely have his usual dollop of sarcasm and general Aussie spin on them. Amazingly, he also managed to score 2 MiB nominations on consecutive days (August 5 & 6, 2007) after announcing he had been keeping track of them...he's considering hiding under his bed as a result.
