NASCAR Celebrating The Past This Summer
Aug 16, 2007 | 6:32PM | report this

NASCAR ,  is turning to the CAR of Yesterday instead of the Car Of Tomorrow, for a limited time in a few upcoming races to celebrate a few legends of American cultural history .

This weekend at Michigan , many chevy drivers will feature special paint schemes to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the American classic 1957 Chevy.

The 57 Chevy Belair is an icon in the world of classic car enthusiasts.  The older it gets, the more sought after this legendary car is.  The 57 Belair in the pic above was completely restored by my own little brother and sold last month for over $14,000. Not bad for a car that originally cost around $2000.

Even at 50 years old, the '57 Chevy is a legend.  I'm sure every car fan has met someone that once owned or wished they had owned a great  peice of american automotive  history   like the famous Belairs of the 50's.

The Car Johnson will run at Michigan this weekend

The car fans would rather see Jimmy in.

Notice the painted on rubber bullets on JJ's car.  Can u imagine If they could run the actual car instead of a paint scheme emulating it?

Try bump drafting with those  giant rubber bullets on the bumpers of the original 57's. I'd hate to see Robby Gordon or JPM with that extra support in the front.

A few more 57  pics:

Also  on Sept. 8 at Richmond,  Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s car will feature an Elvis Presley-inspired paint scheme for the Chevy Rock & Roll 400. The design was unveiled this week during the ceremonies surrounding the 30th anniversary of Elvis' death.

Video of the unveiling:  http://video.ap.org/v/i/vlbg.gif

Seems to me Kyle Petty should be the one to carry this honor and tribute to " The King" of Rock-n-Roll, since his fathwer Richard Petty was "The King" of NASCAR,  but Junior is the most popular driver, so its fitting that he will drive the Elvis inspired car..

It's always nice to see a tribute to the past from NASCAR epsecially in a time when everything points towards the future and the Car Of Tomorrow.  Elvis and the 57 Chevy are definately  good choices as legends  from the 1900's.

Nice article Cuda..The 57 chevy I had was the traditional mist green that was so popular then.

Yep a good wax and polish with those Vett spinners really set it off..I think I paid about $499.00 for mine used back in 61.

Really miss that car. Another throw away I should have kept. Can't believe I traded it in for a 64 VW bug for better gas mileage for work. Figures.

photo- if u only knew then what it would be worht now im sure u would have kept it. my uncle had a 68 gt300 mustang that he sold when he had his first son. he still jokes with his son now that they should have out him up for adoption and kept the car. unbeleivable how classic car values are today compared to the past

Cuda:

That is a fact.. If we only knew back then about the classics, and kept them we could all be wealthy people.

As I recall, I think it was the Forbes magazine in the mid 70's that said having classic cars as an investment was a good place to put your money for growing your income. . Then all of a sudden every body gets on the band wagon.

I was fortunate to pick up 2 70 Hemi Cudas from an Arizona junk yard back in the early 80s once while on a hunt for photo opportunities.

Restored one to show room condition and built the other for a super gas drag car. Still have the show car in storage in Fla. ( still drivable but it eats up gas) and will never sell it. Should have kept the super gas car too but was stupid.

Tez:

If you can get some of the car show auctions on Speed there take a look at what the 57's are pulling at those shows. Can you say up to $100,000.00 US Dollars for 55 thru 57 Chevies?

Have seen some of the other classics go for as high as $250,000.00 US Dollars. Can't believe there are that many people with enough money to blow on a classic car.

One time they had a Ferrari GT350 go for a cool Million US Dollars.

Well the Ohio lottery is up to 144 million dollars. Guess I will put a few bucks down to win so I can go and spend big bucks for some classic cars.

OH come on 1957 Chevy Bel Air a real classic and the paint jobs on these NASCAR Cars is a joke. Respect the past don't make a joke of it. The next thing they will do is paint on fake fins. Have to go now got my 2 bucks goin down to the D-X and filler up with Super Boron.

SOUR GRAPE ALERT!! SOUR GRAPE ALERT !!

We must all be serious when talking about classics.

Look here buddy. Those classics were poorly assembled by UAW members that usually were more interested in goofing off than building a well assembled car.

In Cincinnati, where GM built the Camaros a few years back,I used to hear some real horror stories about the workers trying to see who could get the drunkest and still be able to assemble the cars. Other stories were not putting all the rod bearings on the #### and the engines would blow before the dealers could get them sold. I have plenty of stories about the ex Camaro plant.

Wonder why GM moved the plant to CANADA??

It was only when the die hard car enthusiast got hold of it and corrected the sloppy craftmanship did the car really shine.

You say you have respect for the cars but you use junk fuel, not better grade fuel..

Hello??? Any body Home??? Get a life buddy..

That '57 Belair sure brought back memories. My dad had one back in the 60s. His was solid black. Think the interior was red. He loved that car. And he wishes that he still had it.

Really love the pics and I must admit that NASCAR really is the everyman sport for today. It goes without saying that the other mainline sports could take a leaf out of their books to see how a sport should be ran.
