Is is not too often that you can enjoy a sports day like what happened on October 21st 2007. The Red Sox win 3 straight to win game 7 of the ALCS and earn a trip to the World Series, and the Patriots rout the Dolphins in week 7 of the NFL in their best start in franchise history, 7-0. Not only was is a day of record shattering great play, it could not have worked out better. The weather was about as perfect as you could get, and after a light lunch, you settled in to watch the Patriots in the afternoon, cooked dinner on the grill and were able to clean up and open up a fresh cold Sam Adams just in time for pre-game.
Let’s start with the Patriots. Read this twice. Tom Brady went 21/24 threw for 354 yards, a career best 6 touchdowns to 4 different receivers with no interceptions. The Pats top tight end was not even on the field! He has thrown an incredible 27 touchdowns in the first 7 games and is on pace to throw 61 on the season for a total of almost 4900 yards. His best season in 2004 saw only 28 touchdowns and 4100 yards, which is by no means shabby. What separates Brady from Manning is that Brady is not trying to set any records he is just trying to win games. And when he says it you believe it. For him the end result is the only thing that matters. Even if he stays on pace and beats Manning’s record, then you can bet that he will tell everyone it was the receivers that own the record, not him. And there are two notable ideals behind that statement. One, it will be the truth, and two, he really will believe it. If you want to really pour salt Manning’s soon to be inflicted wounds; Brady has not sold his soul to the advertising world like Manning. Brady is better looking, and dates better looking women. It honestly would not surprise me if Manning even dated women at all. In Manning’s world, no one seems to be good enough for Manning except Manning.
No one would have argued the point that Randy Moss was going to have an impact on the Patriots offense. What is debatable is whether or not anyone really thought that he would have this much impact. Moss is doing something that he should have been doing in Oakland, playing football and do not think for a second that because he is having a career season that I am willing to give him a pass what he did to the Vikings and the Raiders. Moss leads the league in receiving yards and touchdowns, not surprising since Brady leads the league in passing yards and touchdowns. And if Moss continues to leisurely catch 60 yard bombs for touchdowns while in double coverage you really have to wonder if containing this dynamic duo is even possible.
Even if you do, how are you then going to contain Stallworth, Welker, Evans, Watson, Kyle Brady, Gaffney… On any given Sunday, any Patriots receiver becomes a threat especially with a well-oiled front 4 buying all kinds of time for Brady. Yes, the Patriots offense is firing on all kinds of cylinders. The defense, while not as stellar is still doing their job. At the very least they give the team a reason to practice on Tuesdays.
Now for the Red Sox: Who would have thought that all 170 pounds of rookie Dustin Pedroia would be responsible for A bases clearing Double and a 2 run homer for a total of 5 RBIs. Youkilis batted an amazing .500 for the ALCS. Jacoby Ellsbury had a solid bat and looked even better defensively after replacing Crisp in center. Red Sox Nation thanks his mom for letting him stay up past his bedtime so he could play.
I am not ready to look to the Series yet, as I am still trying to digest the Patriots game. Boston sports is definitely looking pretty right now. The outstanding play by the Sox and Patriots have even rubbed off on the Celtics and Bruins. KG gives the Celtics a viable chance this year, and even though it is early in the season, the Bruins have a winning record. They better hope word does not get out, as this could lead to Beantowners actually watching hockey again.
