Ladainian Tomlinson.a no brainer his body of work of over the last 5 years speaks volumes about the kind of player he is .He needs no preseason practice to be dominant,
Adrian Peterson, look for him to have a even bigger year, than last if they get something out of Jackson ,and the passing game.
Larry Johnson when healthy is a workforce back, who is just as effective in the 4th quarter,as he is in the 1st quarter.
Stephen Jackson,is a big back who can catch the ball, and for a big guy has break away speed,in 2006 when he was healthy, his numbers were off the charts.
Maurice Jones Drew,if he didn't split time with Fred Taylor he would be a 1500 yard back ,50 reception,a threat on kick offs returns,he is one of the strongest runners to come along in a while.
Brian Westbrook, great runner, great reciever,a threat to take it to the house every time he touches it,and plays hurt most of the time.Theres no question about his toughness,he would be better if the eagles had a big play threat to stretch field.
Frank Gore enjoy him now because his running style ,is more Earl CAMPBELL than Barry Sanders, he wont be around long with the terrible offense he plays in in San Fran,he's always has been injury prone.
Clinton Portis, good back with still enough of break away speed, to go 60 yards on any carry,he should be better with the emerging Jason Campbell at qb,and a inventive offensive mind as head coach.
Willie Parker, lights out speed when healthy,a threat to to go house to house every time he touches it and he looks that way when he carries it.
Fred Taylor still effective still good for thousand yard seasons at 33 years old, still has break away speed.Very underrated. 10B. Joseph Addai
ALMOST BUT MAYBE IN 2009
Yes NO Marion Barber, strong and tough, you, need more than one great year to make the list.
Brandon Jacobs i need better endurnance less time on the did not play due to injury list
Ronnie Brown more work please, same goes for Lawerence Maroney,
The Storm
So many of the guys that you've mentioned are undoubted talents. But I think that a lot of their success'll be predicated on the system that's adopted by their respective teams more than anything else.
Tomlinson is capable of doing it all but his reticence to get back on the field during the field during that playoff game. It left a lot to be desired in many respects as it brings into question his attitude. Hurt or not he could've had more of a presence for his team were he on the field of play.
See my latest post and let me know what you think as to the merits of the piece ? I'll look forward to reading your comments. The piece in question is titled Name The Fighter .....?
You say Barber cannot be considered because he had one good year (which I agree with), but then you list Peterson as the second best back in the league despite the fact he was a rookie last season. Hes good but I think its to early to name him as the second best back in the league. I would also have Westbrook higher up on this list, he is the most versitile back in the game.
I have to agree with Seahawksown9ers...Adrian Peterson "is not the second best runningback" in the NFL. One season does not merit such an honor. Fred Taylor is, in my opinion, the second best back in the "entire NFL". Adrian Peterson has to go out there and stay healthy and prove himself worthy of the tag "2nd Best RB in the NFL". I'm still trying to figure out how in the world can a guy with the numbers that Fred Taylor has put up and is still capable of putting up at the age of 33, could of been snubbed all of those years by the Pro Bowl committee. To me, that doesn't compute. In all reality, if you get down to the real nitty gritty, Fred could very easily be "The Best RB In The Entire NFL".
MJD is awesome. I basically smack my head against the table every time I think that that the Pats passed over him for Maroney. I think Jacobs should be on this list, he doesn't get the volume of carries to belong, but he is a freak.
Every team that passed on him in the first and half the second round is smacking their heads over Jones-Drew. I bet the Saints really regret taking Bush second overall.
Fred Taylor may very well be the second best running back on the Jags' roster dude, second best in the entire NFL?! That is ridiculous.
The list, in THIS order, is:
1)Tomlinson
2)Stephen Jackson
3)Adrian Peterson
4)Brian Westbrook (underrated)
5)Maurice Jones-Drew
6)Marshawn ####
7)Frank Gore
8)Clinton Portis
9)Willis MacGahee
10)Ronnie Brown (don't forget his pace before he got hurt last year)
All you people that would put any running back on this list even with injuries needs to remember....If Fast Willie Parker doesn't get hurt, he wins the rushing title over EVERYONE on this list. He is no. 5 in the WHOLE nfl, and will prove it with less carries this year!
AP is a great rb no doubt. He still hasnt proven himself yet. He also hasnt proven that he can last a full year without an injury.
Westbrook is the same story. Great Runner injury prone. Philly is sick with a healthy McNabb Westbrook Combo.
Gore is a beast. Credit SF's terrible offense to his injuries.
Portis is still one of my favorties. Even though he is a dead skin.
Fast Willie is just that. I think the NFL has adjusted to his speed though.
If Ronnie Brown can bounce back after his injury look for him to be a beast yet again. He was the only offense the fins had last year. He was practically unstopable.
You guys are a bunch of homers and aren't giving proper analysis. What is the mess including Marion Barber and not having Adrian Peterson as #1 or #2???
AP was #2 in rushing and did not play 16 games. He was the Pro Bowl MVP and record holder of most rushing yards in a game.
Wake up and stop all this homerism -- it clouds your judgment.

Addai barely broke 1000 yards in any season. In fact one of my guys, ####, had more yards than Addai, and Addai plays behind a much better line. You also can't just look at their stats, because Jones-Drew, and Barber were all splitting time, and STILL putting up similar numbers to Addai. I GUARANTEE you if you take any of my running backs and put it with the Colts offense, they'd be more productive than Addai.
