top 10 qbs in the NFL .......MY OPINION
Jul 19, 2008 | 6:41AM | report this

1.PEYTON MANNING , durable,consistent,smart,wins 10 plus games every year,no questions here

2.TOM BRADY,durable consistent, smart, wins at least 11 games a year ,probably greatest clutch quaterback of all time remember when his carreer is over he may have 6 super bowl titles and 8 super bowl appearances

3.BRETT FARVE,besides flip flopping more than a politician,he is a gamer durable, mvp, and loves the game a older qb ,who hasn't slipped much in 16 years

4.TONY ROMO,good qb,but so far all stats and no big wins,as in playoff victories,he's labeled a choke artist, but i sure love wtatching him play

5.CARSON PALMER,substance,substance,great qb,with obvious weapons,TJ,and CJ ,

6.BEN ROETHLISBERGER,throwback qb,super bowl winner,great player

7.JOHN KITNA,don't laugh he can play, over 4000 yards passing, takes alot of hits and he gets up and competes, his team just stinks

8.DREW BREES,can flat out play, not a big guy but has a big arm,

9.DONOVAN MCNABB,check his resume he isn't pretty, but he does more with suspect talent on offense, than any other qb in the league,Kevin Curtis is there star reciever, enough said

10.MATT HASSELBACK      good ,smart, most of  us dont  know how good he is because ,he plays,in SEATTLE

10a.Eli   Manning ,he had a great post season, and i know Brett Farve is out the league

Dude I respect your opinion but how can you justify Tono Romo or John Kitna being a better QB than Drew Brees?

How is Ben not better than Carson? As a starter, Ben is 7-1 against Carson. Sure Ben plays a better team, but if Ben had Carson's weapons, and vice versa, Ben would still be doing better.

Take care, and thanks for sharing your opinion! Whenever someone tries to rank the top QBs in the league, it's cause for controversy, so please don't look at my comment as some sort of "attack"

Take care!

i like your list and would also switch big ben with palmer ***** mcnabb has always been a favorite of mine but his health is a concern lets see if he can come back this year and if he truely lost a step he' out of the top ten. as i've been sayin' all week the qb situation in the nfl is marginal LOOK when i rate MATH-HUGH, AND KITNA IN THE TOP 10 YOU DO THE MATH ON QUALITY IN THIS LEAGUE.. FAVRE TO VIKS SUPER BOWL BOUND .

Nice list. I agree with most of the choices.

John Kitna is not a top 10 QB. You definitely hit a major point in his pass yards and his ability to keep getting up after getting hit. Replace him with: Phillip Rivers. Sure, the kid has a big mouth(not unlike Kitna) but efficiency-wise, he does get the job done for the Bolts. Pretty accurate, not bad in the clutch.

Not sure if Donovan McNabb is a top ten QB anymore. He still has game but I don't know if he's "Top 10" material now. You can't deny he knows how to hit his receivers, his INT count is down every year, and makes pretty good game-time decisions but it's very possible you could put other QBs here. Possible replacements: 1) Dave Garrard. Big plays last season leading the Jags to and through the playoffs. Off-season moves and additions set him up for a big year in '08. 2) Derek Anderson. Yes he through 19 picks. Yes it was only one year. However, the 29 TDs and surprise break-out year of '07 leaves us with plenty to look forward to in '08. With close to a full year of starting under his belt and a great rapport w/his teammates Derek, like Garrard, will be a top ten QB in '08.

Just some thoughts/opinions/ideas.

Have a great day!

DERRICK ANDERSON HAD ONE GREAT YEAR,McNABB has Kevin Curtis and Westbrook and they still compete or make the playoffs every year,David Garrard isn't better than Jeff Garcia

I like your list, I would move Hass up a few spots though, he is certainly better than Kitna and McNabb, told everyone that the pass was coming last year, and they still couldnt stop him.

Kitna is this generation's Elvis Grbac--a QB that puts up great stats for fantasy players but doesn't put up a lot of wins. That's akin to saying Grbac was one of the top QB's of the 90's.

I would not put Romo at #4. Here's my top 10:

1. Peyton Manning
2. Tom Brady
3. Brett Favre
4. Ben Roethlisberger
5. Drew Brees
6. Eli Manning
7. Carson Palmer
8. Matt Hasselbeck
9. Donovan McNabb
10. Philip Rivers

As you can see, Romo doesn't crack the top 10. He's good, but this year is a "prove it to me" year. The above QB's are well-established as winners (Palmer tore up his ACL in the playoffs early in that game, but he got the Bengals there).

Kitna?

Well I guess if you have more pass attempts than Peyton and Tom in a season, you're going to put up some numbers. But top ten QB's don't throw more interceptions than TD's and they definitely know how to get rid of the ball when a sack is coming.

Kitna makes WAY too many mistakes and his turn overs tell the story.

My top ten:

1. Matt Hasselbeck
2. Matt Hasselbeck
3. Matt Hasselbeck
4. Matt Hasselbeck
5. Matt Hasselbeck
6. Matt Hasselbeck
7. Matt Hasselbeck
8. Matt Hasselbeck
9. Matt Hasselbeck
10. Tom Bra.......no, it's Matt Hasselbeck again.

Just playing......LOL.

KITNA PLAYS FOR A LOUSY team,if he had a running game to help him and a defense he would be better and he's better than ELVIS GRBAC,who got a load of cash and bounced.HASS IS GOOD,I don't know about moving him up though

I would rank Palmer ahead of Romo, and put both Brees and Hasselbeck in the top 5. Both Brees and Hasselbeck lack a strong running game, and work with less offensive talent than most other QBs. Not sure Kitna belongs even with 2 talend WR's. Also a team's record should not reflect a QB's status. Sure the Bengals suck, but Palmer is a great QB and deserves top 5 respect.

Jon,
I agree with your top ten list.

Seahawksown9ers!,
Brees and Hasselbeck do belong in there. I'm not sure what Storm is thinking. Sure the Lions suck but Kitna has plenty of good receivers to throw to. Not hte same case with Brees and Hasselbeck. Both our teams have on good WR and that's it.

Although I don't agree the Saints have no strong running game...unless you are talking without Deuce.

If the NFL played outside and on grass ... mud snow et al ... you'd really be surprised at how good Kitna is: Kitna is an "ol school mudder". we both enjoy the same ala mater ... Central Washington University (NAIA). Nothing like playing outside on the grass in Ellensburg WA .. a small farming community which has winds that make Chicagoans run fer shelter.

I will also gloat a lil about Matt ... got to finish my Iliad ... thats Homer fer you younguns.
If its a fantasy draft and the QB's are running I would have no problem grabbing Matt after Tom, Payton and (with due respects to Greenspire) ... Ben. Some of that decision would be my draft position and the availability of getting a hookup WR with my QB. I would also include ... and have used Drew as a solid fantasy QB to draw on. Carson can have a big game .. but the team around him doesn't hold fertilizer right now! Eli .. ya the Giants won the super bowl but for now he is still in the Trent Dilfer class as far as I'm concerned, if he can put it together and actually lead the team rather than follow it this season I'll change my tune ... next year
Brady
P Manning
Roethlisberger
Hasselback
Brees
Romo (I'd have to kil myself if I ended up drafting Tonyboy)
with much luv .. let the season begin .. soon

Storm...I got your back with Kitna. Put him on a team like seattle or Jax. Teams with a defense and a runing game and he would win as as many, if not more, games than their QBs do now.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion however, I must at least ask how you came to your conclusions.

Love,hate,stats,gut feel?

I have no problems with people voting Brady and Manning 1&2 regardless of their respective order. I am intrigued with how Hasselbeck,Romo,Palmer and Brees are considered "better" than Big Ben?

I'm not even going to offer my retort. I'm just going to ask questions.

Is it based on playoff wins? Championships? Leadership? Athletic ability? Stats?

I'll even say okay, Despite the offensive weapons he has always had; I can say Carson is debatable.

I definitely need further explanation on the other three though. Enlighten me.

I THINK THE QB POSITION IS THE MOST TELLING. THEY GET PAID THE BIG BUCKS FOR A REASON. I'VE ALWAYS TEASED MATH-HUGH, BECAUSE I FEEL HE HAS NOT GONE TO THE ELITE LEVEL . THE SEAHAWKS HAVE HAD A GREAT RUNNING GAME AND THEIR LINE PLAY AND RECEIVORS ARE PLENTY GOOD. THIS IS THE YEAR OF MATH-HUGH TO STEP IT UP A NOTCH. IF HE DOES THE SEAHAWKS COULD WIN THE WIDE OPEN NFC.........

If you tell the whole NFL that you are abandoning the run and you are going to pass for the rest of the season, and you still pass for 30 yards short of 4000, thats pretty impressive. Hass has carried the whole team on his back into the playoffs each year since the 05 season, the last time the Hawks actually had a running game. I just think he's much better than 8th place on this list, I would put him in the top 5, but obviously Im biased.

What criteria are we using here to rate the QB's? Is it based on stats alone, are we also considering their post season, are we using team records as an indicator of how they carry their team? I think that the rankings change based on what formula is used. Good post THESTORM, it is a great topic of debate!

Roethlisberger is good but not top 5 good, he is definitly top 7 or 8 good though. No way Warner, Gerrard, and Garcia belong on your list blue. Fantasy football is not real football, so don't get the two confused.

Wait a minute .. if you all can include a retired QB .. Why isnt Joe Montana on the list .. get that over the hill, lime light sucken whiner Farve off ... Maybe I should include Warren Moon .. at least he is still the the Booth
Garcia ... whoa that pipsqueak cant even see over his own offensive line
Gerrard one season makes a career eh?
Kurt Warner .. does he even suit up?

Bottom line here .. is many o you "experts" will do anything to stack the deck against Hasselbeck including pulling shelved old men outa the closet.
Do what you want deny what yoiu will.. it will only get you run over

Outside of Brady & P Manning ... I wonder who else on that list has more playoff appearances playoff victories and Pro Bowl selection than Hasselbeck over the last 4-5 years ... humm?
OH an sorry Seahawksown9ers: in a fantasy draft I might take Ben over Matt ... depending on my draft position and potential same team hook ups at WR. ... jus so ya'll dont think im a complete homer

My list had Ben 3 and Matt 4 .. the above post lists my criteria ... and admits a dash of Homerism

What intrigues me is how many people continue to place Hasselbeck outa the top 5 and nearly off the list. Lists that include retired and backup QB's (Farve and Warner)
one more Time I certainly like Brees too.
Think about this; I play in a 12 team fantasy league ... no way in heaven would Warner, Farve, Garcia, E manning or McNabb be on my QB short list on draft day ... FFS I'd take Kitna over the above listed

i think mcnabb should b in the top 5 cuz hes consistently put up solid #s over the last 8-10 yrs. w/ lees than top flight athletes in skill positions. i base this decision on stats, toughness, all around record & all out athleticism.

sixfigurefan2,

Big Ben is probably better than Romo, I'll admit that.

Drew Brees and Matt Hasselback haven't had players on Hines Ward's level to throw the ball to. They have good, but not great players catching the ball. I think that if you put Brees or Hasselback on the Steelers, the Steelers are a better team. Not by much, but better.

Big Ben's motorcycle incident and his complaining about not having a tall WR to throw to stick in my head, and I would take Brees, Hasselback or Palmer before Roethlisberger on my team.

i like hasselbeck, and think he's deserving of a top 10 vote,... but i also feel like hes had the tools there to win the bowl 4 at least a couple of yrs. now,...so he dropped on my list. as far as garcia, gerrard, rivers,......NO. these are hon. mentions. you have 2 be consistent 4 at least 2-3 seasons in my opinion. i only place mcnabb ahead of him because mcnabbs had 2 do more w/ less, so to speak.

I dont claim to be an expert, but i did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

But whats wrong with Gerrard and Garcia ? Gerard had a 102.2 passer rating ( behind only Big Ben and Tom Brady) and a league best "3 interceptions" and if not for Garcia, the Bucs werent makin the playoffs last year.

i thought this post was best QBs rite now? and if thats the case, i'l stick with my picks

Thanks for including Eli. I felt that after a pathetic season, he really came of age in the playoffs. I expect continued improvement after his signature drive. He could have folded, but proved to himself and to us that he's also a gamer. Now he has to prove that he's a top 10 during the regular season.

Okay my friend, I think I need to point out a couple of things.

Number one being the story about Ben "complaining" about a tall receiver was embellished upon greatly.Trust me, the Steelers are an organization that will bounce someone who rattles the cage and can be labeled cancerous to others.

Plex? lol The Giants can have him and by the way how many catches did Plex have in the Superbowl?
Plex doesn't like to practice and doesn't show up in big games most of the time. Give him a chance? The Steelers might as well have not had him out there in the AFC Championship game as he completely disappeared.

The knock on him coming out of college was he was lazy. He relied to much on his height and athletic ability and did not put in the effort to take it to the next level. If he wouldn't have vanished not once but twice in the playoffs, the Steelers might have considered signing him long term.

No thank you, the Giants can keep Plex.

lleaglemania,

I'm not to sure what tools you're referring too about Hasselbeck having?

K. Robinson?.......Dropped passes
J. Stevens?........Dropped passes
D. Jackson?........Okay, but still dropped alot of passes.

Fact his, Seattle has almost led the league in dropped passes for a few years now. Some how though, Matt still get's us to the playoffs and at least one post season win. I'm not saying elevate Matt to number one or even in the top five, because most of this is opinion anyways. But Matt's been minus a play-making receiver his whole career. At we all hope Nate Burleson can step up to that position. I have had the plessure of playing against Nate Burleson and he is a great athlete. So hopefully, Nate can be Matt's skill saw this season.

Nice to see someone include Kitna in a list like this. I've been saying for three years that the man can get it done he just needs a line to protect him and a running game to kill the clock. I do think his INTs are way to high but at the same time, he has had NO time to look for an open receiver and the Lions are usually playing from behind causing him to throw the ball to places he wouldn't normally to try and get points. Love the list, might have added Gerrard instead of McNabb. McNabb is getting by on history alot these days and not on performance.

Blue,

Garcia seemed to be a shell of his former self. He can get the job done, but I think the Bucs defense was more responsible for the division title than Garcia.

Garrard is a decent QB, but he plays in a run first offense. I don't think he broke 3000 yards passing, and when he threw the ball 20 times or more a game thats when the INTs starting showing up. Hes a great QB for his offensive, but is not in the same class as QBs who play in a pass heavy offense.

Good list, TheStorm. Think other than Kitna, everyone else definitely belongs. Jon is right there, but other than Palmer, I personally can't put someone in there that has played in just one playoff game.

My list:

1) Tom Brady
1a) Peyton Manning
3) Brett Favre
4) Ben Roethlisberger
5) Matt Hasselback
6) Carson Palmer
7) Donovan McNabb
8) Drew Brees
9) Tony Romo
10)Marc Bulger

Wild Card - David Garrard
Wild Card - Phillip Rivers
Wild Card - Eli Manning
Wild Card - Jake Delhomme
Wild Card - Jay Cutler
Wild Card - Jon Kitna

I'd put Derrick Anderson in the mentions, but want to see him play one more full season before evaluation.

it took balls to put Kitna up there but what others have said is right, his potential would be clearer at a stronger team in regards to offense. And as you said, he can sure take a hit.
Garrard does it for me, the guy rarely throws a pick and has great confidence as QB.
