Professional football players are the least paid professional athletes compared to basketball players and baseball players, they also have less job security,so its only right for them to get paid as much money as possible.Ther careers last on the average of 4 years, and they can be cut at any time, most of the contracts of professional football players aren't worth the paper there printed on.Professional football players should make more money compared to what the league is making, pro football signs deals equaling 6 billion over a the course of 5 years with the networks ,this doesn't include merchandise, 10 dollar parking for home games, food sales, and beer sales during the games, and other money that comes in ,and the commissioner and a few vets complain, now the vets at the time at signing there contract they were happy, but things change and the money gets bigger every year.I f a team wants to pay a player a large sum of money then so be it,it's between the team and player,i pray Gene Upshaw and the union don't fall for this, the game is fine the way it is ,you perform you get paid if you dont perform you get cut and your money stops.Less not forget it is the most popular sport in America.
NOBODY SAYS NOTHING about Roger making what 3 or 5 million to wear a suit and sit in on meetings, and when he makes a decision he mulls it over with his staff is that really worth 5 million year. In one sense it is ,because of the money the league generates, and in another sense its not,BUT THE MONEY GETS BIGGER EVERY YEAR,thats the point im making,if they make any changes upgrade the pension plan, and medical insurance for retired players and lower the age to 40 so players that play there 4 years and forced out the league a due to injury at age 27 don't have to wait until 45,to get medical attention and some cash they desperately need.
I feel your pain but I think you missed the commissioner’s point. Mr. Goddell stated that it is insane that Jake Long, a man who has never played in a NFL game, should instantly be paid better than two thirds of the veterans who have played the exact same position in the league. Hasn’t your favorite team cut a popular player because of salary cap issues? Most of the time, player contracts are voided or restructured so that the draft picks can be signed. Your points are valid, as the NFL is a money making machine. And yes while ticket prices are expensive, the owners believe that the present CBA is not fair because they feel that their own greed needs should take precedence over paying the people who are actually the product, the players. However, all of the points you cite cannot be fixed at one time. The fact that Goddell has placed agents on notice that the day is coming soon where rookies are not going to walk in the door and be paid for what they have done in college, while veterans who have distinguished themselves are rewarded by having their contracts renegotiated or cut because there is not enough cap space to keep him. Every time a sports business comes closer to what the real world deals with, we must celebrate each small tender moment.
first round draft picks always get large contracts, thats how business is conducted today in the Nfl,and I don't feel that bad for veterans they been playing long enough to know the deal,i hope they invested there money right
i think rookie contracts should be like in the NBA each slot has a selected salary in the first round. But in the NFL draft it should based on position how much the max is paid. Cause if you look at the NBA each rookie pick gets paid the same every year and if their a superstar theyll cash in and get that huge contract eventually that theyve earned by playing like a superstar. In the NFL if you a good college layer you get a bunch of money for nothing. paying an unproven commodity a substantial amount of money. Plus the expenses on the NFL are mroe than that of the NBA. in the nfl there generally 60000 fans at a stadium compared to what 20000 at a basketball game. Theres turf or grass that needs to be maintained all year. Stadium costs for repairs and maitnence and upgrades. football equipment (footballs, helmets, pads, ETC) cause in the nfl the home team is required to have i believe 80 footballs during the game. and not to mention all the medical equipment. Plus theres a bigger staff for an nfl team then a nba team.
I concur with natedognphx. I know of no other business where the latest person hired is payed more money than highly-trained and experienced employees. We have the situation that we have today because the owners and the unions have lost control to sports agents.
Some of these rookies will never play a down in an NFL regular season game, but their guarantees will pay them more money than Pro Bowl players on their own team. I think that Texas fan 19 has a good plan. Let the rookies prove themselves before they get the huge contracts. Use the money to take care of players who have had their careers ended by injuries. The present system benefits only the agents.
The Storm
It's been the owners and ther league that've set these things in play. But at the same time it's now getting insane where you've got kids just being paid merely on potential before they've even played a down in the NFL .
The NFL has become a law unto itself and it's now beginning to find out what it's like to deal with financial expediency when it comes to their players. And when it comes to the veterans and those who've retired. I think that you're way off base there. A lot of these guys aren't even being afforded the proper entitlements that the league and Players' Union agree that they should've been afforded. Therein lies the rub without many of those guys the NFL wouldn't be what it is today. And in many respects they ought to be entitled to those bounties that the league now has pouring into its coffers.
Your an #### the average is above 4 yrs and noone is forcing them to play football. Why would you pay big tome bucks to someone that has not played on a nfl field? Let the rookies play a year or 2 and let them prove themselves worthy of 50+ mil a yr before signing them to a huge contract.
once again its how business is conducted today in the NFL,and you have to look at football as a sport and entertainment ,new talent new money and owners pay big for new talent especially 1st round picks do your homework, only a handful of draft picks get large contracts anyway,YOUR INSULTS ARENT BECOMMING OF YOU haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
