Patriots vs. Colts - The Best Regualr Season Game Ever
Oct 31, 2007 | 9:08PM | report this

So it is finally here.  The 8-0 New England Patriots take on the 7-0 Indianapolis Colts in what is probably the best regular season match up of all time.  Never in the history of the NFL have two teams met this late in the season with perfect records.  To appreciate how truly dominant these teams have been in 2007 let’s take a look at the numbers:

New England Patriots (8-0) – The New England Patriots have been truly remarkable.  They have outscored their opponents 331 to 127 or by an average of 25.5 points per game.  The 204-point margin of victory is more points than all but two teams have scored on the entire season.  They rank first in total yards per game with 439.5 yards per game.  They rank first in passing yards at 303.8 yards per game.  They rank 8th in rushing yards at 135.8 yards per game. This despite Maroney being hurt for much of the season.  They have gained 400 yards or more of total offense in every game this season.  Tom Brady has 30 touchdown passes against 2 interceptions.  They have scored over 40 points in 3 straight games.  The last team to do that was the 2004 Indianapolis Colts.  Furthermore, they rank 3rd in total defense giving up 268.5 yards per game.  This despite Rodney Harrison missing the first 4 games of the season and Seymour missing the first 7 games.  Whether you are a Patriots fan or root against the Patriots with religious like passion we are definitely watching a historical start to a season.  This will be the game that determines where their entire regular season ranks in NFL history.  If they were able to beat the Colts as convincingly as they have beat their other opponents they will probably be considered the best team in NFL history; assuming they lose one game or less and win the Super Bowl.  If they lose the game convincingly people will argue the Patriots start is a fraud, the result of a division that stands at (4-19).   A division that has one win outside of the division, Buffalo over Baltimore.  A great team running up the score on nobodies.  Just not an all time great team.  That is what is at stake for the Patriots this week.

Indianapolis Colts (7-0) – When you consider what the Colts have accomplished this season, it is truly amazing that people are not talking about their season.  By beating Carolina 31-7 on Sunday they became the first team since the 1929-1931 Green Bay Packers to begin three consecutive seasons (7-0).  This is by far the best team the Colts have had in the Peyton Manning era.  The offense is explosive as ever, averaging 399.0 yards per game.  They rank 5th in rushing, with 140.3 yards per game.  They rank 6th in passing at 257.8 yards per game.  Amazingly they have done that with Marvin Harrison ####ed up and Joseph Addai missing time.  That isn’t what makes this team so special.  We are used to the Colts putting up gaudy offensive numbers, regardless of Manning’s weapons.  What we aren’t used to is a 4th ranked defense giving up only 272.9 yards per game.  What we are not used to is a defense that surrenders only 14.6 ppg.  The Colts have outscored the opposition 224 to 102, or by 17.4 points per game.  This was supposed to be a rebuilding year for the defense with many starters lost to injury or free agency.  They have replaced those departures and are a stronger unit than the team that won it all in 2006.  The argument was always that if Peyton Manning ever had a defense, the Colts would be unbeatable.  We are getting to see that this season.  Furthermore, they are doing this in a division that has two other teams at (5-2).  The Colts opponents have a (27-23) record on the season.  The Patriots meanwhile have played opponents with a (24-34) record.  When you consider the Colts fast start and the competition it has come against, I couldn’t fault a Colt’s fan for feeling that the Colts have the better team.  In any other season we are obsessed with the Colts historic start.  I cannot remember two teams that have been this dominant playing in the same season in the same conference.  We are witnessing history unfold before are eyes.  This will truly be an all-time great regular season game.

Before we look at this matchup, let’s take a look at some other memorable regular season match ups that have been of this magnitude.  The criteria for making the list was 1) Teams could not be in the same division, but had to be in the same conference, and 2) Teams had to meet each other in the playoffs later that season with the winner winning the Super Bowl.

1990 – New York Giants (10-1) at San Francisco 49ers (10-1) – This was the closest we got to watching two unbeaten teams this late in the season.  The 49ers and Giants both started the season (10-0) and lost the week before this match up.  The 49ers featured the 8th ranked scoring offense and finished 2nd in points allowed.  The Giants were a pedestrian 15th in points scored, but featured the number one defense in points allowed and were 2nd in yards allowed.  The two teams played a low scoring game that would end with 49er victory by the score of 7-3.  The two teams would meet again in the NFC Championship Game, with the Giants prevailing 15-13.  The Giants would go on to beat the Bills in the Super Bowl.

1994 – Dallas Cowboys (8-1) at San Francisco 49ers (7-2) – This was a monumental game in the 49ers Super Bowl run.  Having lost the last 2 championship games to Dallas, the 49ers went on a defensive spending spree that was highlighted with the signing of Prime Time.  The 49ers would lead the league in scoring that season and finished 6th in points allowed.  The Cowboys were 2nd and 3rd.   The 49ers got the better of that game 21-14, and finished the season one game ahead of the Cowboys.  The 49ers would also win the rematch in the playoffs 38-28.  They would go on to destroy the Chargers in the Super Bowl.

1995 – Green Bay Packers (3-1) at Dallas Cowboys (4-1) – The Packers had lost two blowouts to the Cowboys in the playoffs in Dallas the last two seasons.  The Packers were hoping to win this game to help them get that playoff game in Lambeau.  The Packers featured a team that would finish the season 6th in points scored and 4th in points allowed.  The Cowboys finished 3rd in both categories.  The Cowboys would take this game 34-24.  The Packers finished the season 11-5 to Dallas’s 12-4.  That led to a rematch in the NFC Championship Game in Dallas, which was also won by Dallas 38-27.  The Cowboys would go on to beat the Steelers in the Super Bowl capturing their 3rd title in 4 years.

1996 – San Francisco 49ers (4-1) at Green Bay Packers (5-1)  – This was a huge Monday night game.  The Packers were in the mist of a historic start and expectations were sky- high coming off the 1995 season.  The two teams had met in the playoffs the year before with the Packers prevailing at Candlestick 27-17.  The Cowboys, Packers, and 49ers were considered the favorites that year to come out of the NFC.  The Packers finished the season ranked 1st in both points scored and allowed.  The 49ers finished 3rd and 5th.  The Packers would win this game in OT 23-20.  The Packers would go on to finish 13-3 and the 49ers would go on to finish 12-4.  They would meet in the 2nd round that year with the Packers prevailing 35-14 on route to their first Super Bowl since the Lombardi era.

2004 New England (6-0) at Pittsburgh (5-1) – These two familiar foes would face off in an epic regular season contest.  The Patriots were the defending Super Bowl Champions and on an 18 game regular season winning streak, (21 counting playoffs).  The Steelers had inserted a young Big Ben into the lineup and were in the process of something great.  The Steelers would get the better of this matchup 34-20 and would finish the season 15-1.  The Patriots didn’t do too badly themselves, finishing 14-2.  The Steelers ranked 11th in points scored, but were 1st in points allowed.  The Patriots were 4th and 2nd.  The Patriots would get the better of the Steelers in the title game winning 41-27.  They would go on to capture their 3rd Super Bowl in 4 years.

2006 – Indianapolis  (7-0) at New England (6-1)  - The matchup in Foxboro last year wasn’t too shabby.  The Colts would beat the Patriots 27-20.  Both teams finished the season 12-4, but neither received a first round bye.  Both teams would win their home playoff game, win a road playoff game, and would meet again in Indy.  The Colts were 3rd in scoring last season, but ranked 23rd in points allowed.  The Patriots had the better balance finishing 7th in points scored and 2nd in points allowed.  The teams would play a classic 38-34 game with the Colts going on to beat the Bears in the Super Bowl.

We’ve had plenty of other instances of teams meeting in the regular season and later in the postseason.  The 1999 Jaguars and Titans, the 2000 Ravens and Titans, and the 2002 Eagles and Bucs are a few that come to mind.   It is not unusual for dominant teams to meet in both the regular season and playoffs.

I am not a believer in the theory that how you play in September and October really doesn’t matter.   After you have watched 6-8 games you can tell who the contenders are and who the pretenders are.  You are what your record says you are.  Great teams play great the entire year.  The Patriots and Colts have been great in past seasons.  Both teams look like all time great teams this season.

The only thing that can change that is injuries.  Barring a Petyon Manning or Tom Brady injury we look destined to have another Colts vs. Patriots AFC Championship Game.  These two teams are head and shoulders above the league.  If both teams stay relatively healthy there doesn’t appear to be anything that can stop the inevitable from happening; a January rematch at the winner’s field.

These types of games are so huge because it basically gives the winner a two game lead.  With the tiebreaker the winner can still afford to be tied and earn the home playoff game.  While the winner will have the inside track to home field, the loser is by no means doomed to be the runner up the second time around.   Both teams are good enough to win the playoff rematch on the road.

Here are the two things I think you need to look for in this game:

1) The Patriots linebackers and safeties vs. Clark and Addai – This is what I believe will be the biggest key to the game.  The difference in the Colts this year as opposed to 2004 is that the Colts can beat you with both an explosive offense and a grind it out style.  The reasons for that are the emergence of the running game, improvement on defense, and the maturation of Peyton Manning.  The one weakness in the Patriots stellar defensive unit would be the linebackers and safeties.  While this is a veteran group they rely more on their smarts than they do on their athleticism.  There are plenty of guys in the league that run faster.  Thomas would be the exception to that and is the main reason the Patriots signed him.  The Patriots linebackers looked very slow in that title game last season.  Can Manning exploit this part of the defense like he did in last years AFC Championship Game?  If he can, the Colts can score points and control the clock, thus keeping the explosive Patriots offense on the sidelines.

2) Moss, Stallworth, and Welker vs. the Colts secondary – The Patriots are going to do the same thing they have in their first 8 ball games.  They are going to spread the field and try to score in bunches.  The goal will be to put the pressure on Manning and the Colts receivers to answer.  The goal will be to make the Colts one-dimensional.  While the Colts secondary is much improved over last season they haven’t faced a receiving core quite like this in game conditions.  The Colts will not be able to cover the Patriots all over the field.  The key is Freeney and Mathis putting pressure on Brady.  If he doesn’t have time to find players down field, the Patriots will have to rely on short passes and the running game.  If the Patriots are constantly in 3rd and long type situations, the Colts will have a better chance of controlling the game.

In the end, this game is more important to the Patriots than the Colts.  The Colts are the defending champs and have won the last 3 meetings.  The whole Patriots offseason was for this game.  The Patriots were so bitter about losing the championship game that they wanted to prevent that from ever happening again.  If they lose this game by 1 point their whole start is meaningless.

While the Colts want the game for seeding purposes, it is only important that they play a competitive game.  A 52-7 loss would be a bad mental barrier for a future playoff game.  As long as they play competitively they no longer have the hurdle that haunted them for so many years, How Do We Beat the Patriots???  They know they can beat this team.  If they were to lose 34-27, they could chalk it up to a close loss in the midst of a historic Patriots start.  They know that in a playoff game they have the experience and personal necessary to win that game.  With the Colts improved run game and defense they are much better equipped to win a game in bad weather then they were in 2003 and 2004.

In my preseason picks, I had the Patriots as the #1 seed at 14-2 and the Colts as the #2 seed at 12-4.  In my Power Rankings I have the Patriots ranked number one and the Colts number two.  The Patriots have not done anything since August to convince me they are not the best team in the NFL.  The Patriots are what I thought they would be.  While I didn’t envision the Colts having such a good defense, I am not one to waffle on my positions.  I do not play both sides of the fence.

I have gone back and forth on this game in my mind so much.  I can’t decide who is going to win.  One minute I think the Patriots will blow past the Colts and the next minute I think the Colts have a chance to win big.  Both teams have played so well that it doesn’t seem possible that either could lose.

I am sticking with the Patriots.  The biggest factor is The Hood.  Since the Patriots were exposed for the Camera Incident in NY (I hate calling scandals gate) they have been on a mission.  I have never seen a team that was this well prepared, this focused, and this determined in the 20 years I have been watching football.  I always thought that Madden Games were unrealistic, because the stats were unachievable.  This Patriots team appears to be the exception.  Brady doesn’t look like he is playing football.  He looks like he is hitting the X button, then going to R1, oh wait, the Square Button is open.  Playing QB is supposed to be one of the toughest things to do in sports.  The way he has played this season makes it look like anyone in the country could do it.

It doesn’t even seem possible that the Patriots and Dolphins are both professional teams.  It doesn’t even look like they are playing the same game.  I have never seen the gap this big between the best team and the worst team.  While the Colts have looked great at times this year, they haven’t given me that same feel.

In past epic matchups home field does seem to be a big deal.  The Colts play so well in that dome.  It is the first time in years the Colts have been an underdog at home.  If the Patriots were not battled tested, I think playing in that environment could faze them.  This team is so experienced that I can’t see that being a big factor.

That said, the Colts aren’t going to lie down and die for the Patriots.  I expect them to give the Patriots everything they could ask for, and more.  The Patriots leading the Dolphins 42-7 at halftime has no bearing on this game.  This is about these players on these teams.  The one area I think the Colts can exploit is the middle of the Patriots linebacking core and secondary.

If this were the 2004 Colts vs. the 2007 Patriots, I would pick the Patriots to win by 3 or 4 touchdowns.  The difference in Peyton Manning now as opposed to 2004 is that he is willing to take the short routes and dump passes and move the ball methodically down the field.  While he still picks his spots, he is much more intelligent about it.  He isn’t looking for the big play every play.  He doesn’t think Ty Law plays for his team.  I have been more impressed with him in his last 23 ball games than I was when he was putting up gaudy numbers in 2004.

Rarely do these types of games live up to the billing.  I believe this one will.  I look for the Patriots to beat the Colts 38-31.  I look for the Patriots to win home field advantage, in large part due to the victory in this game.  I look for the Colts to finish the season as the number 2 seed.  I look for the Colts to play the Patriots in New England for the title game.

I would love to hear your thoughts.  Are you going with the Colts or the Pats?  Are you excited for the game, or do you just want it to be over?  What are some of your favorite big regular season match ups from the past?  Let me know your thoughts.

Prince - I have written an article saying that the Patriots start is one of the 5 best in the history of the NFL. However, I am not a writer for Saturday Night Live that is going to say Pats 135 Colts -10.

I think to say the Pats will kill them when the Colts have a) won the Super Bowl, b) have the longest win streak in the NFL, and c) won the last 3 vs the Patriots is disrespectful of what this worthy team has accomplished.

StreetCred excellent writeup! I've been waiting for this ever since you teased it in your earlier report and it's everything I expected. Excellent breakdown of facts and strategy. While many Pats fans will blow this off and say the game will be a total blowout I am still nervous and nowhere near as sure of the outcome as I would like to be! If the Pats defense plays like it did in the AFC game then this game will belong to the Colts.

SriPatsFan - I'm glad you enjoyed the preview. Pats fans that come on here or any other blog and talk about how the Pats will win by 3 touchdowns are not only showing their ignorance, but are doing a diservice to themselves. Same for Colts fans.

The reason this game is great is not because of the Pats. The reason this game is great is not because of the Colts. It is because BOTH of them are playing.

Think of the really great matchups I put on my list. What do they all have in common? Both teams won Super Bowls. When both teams don't win Super Bowls you have the Jags & Titans, Eagles & Bucs, Ravens & Titans. Good at the time. Yeah. Interesting. But not all time great. No something people talk about for years to come.

What makes this matchup special and will make the probable rematch in the playoffs special is what BOTH teams have done. Not just one of them.

I find it interesting that neither team is a "smack talking" team. Post game interviews show Pats players as downright humble when speaking about their personal performances and even using mild terms when commenting on teammates who have just had the best game of their careers.

Colts players, hard to say anything negative about them. Their coach is a class act, they have a future legendary QB and a good, solid team. Argueably better than last year's SB winning team.

Pats' coach is a genius on the field, but does not have a great persona. He does, however, ensure his players do not do excessive celebrations on the field (I think this may stem from last year's SD post game dance). I also think he is the reason for the team's humble media face.

He won't let his players rub the win in anyone's face with smack talk, dances or words, but he is doing it with scores. Last week's game had only 2 Patriot punts, one was after the back up failed to score a first down.

With the first string in, the team has the ability to score at will.

This has the makings of being one of the best games of the year. With all the hype, I hope it is.

Hello!

Seeing as you devoted all this time to my favourite team,I guess I couldn't resist writing again.

I think you've done a very good job analyzing the matchups. And Like SriLankanPatsFan, I too am very nervous. I am only giving myself the hope of 50-55% chance of victory (I had 65% for the Cowboys). So I think it really could go either way. Of course, I am hoping desperately for the validation that a win would give.. but I probably shouldn't care thaaat much. And yes, I would love to see the Pats rise up and just trash the Colts, but I'm sure it's very, very unlikely to happen.

Football Outsiders says the Pats 8-game start is the best EVER, which is interesting. I wonder if they'll remember that next year, or if they are just building up the hype. I'll be watching this.. but I'll be a nervous wreck.

Thanks for all your work! I know I didn't have much useful to say, but you let me let out a lot of my thoughts, too.

This is a pretty tough game to call as they are both evenly matched. When my Pats lost to Indy in the AFC Championship, I was glad that Indy won the game, mostly because of Dungy, as it was HIS Tampa team that won the SB over Oakland.
I'm going to go with NE, with a final score 45-38. Welker and Gonzales as the top receivers and both Maroney and Addai over a buck-25 in rushing. I also believe the x-factor will be Donte Stallworth. Seymour WILL have a big day!

This is one of the more intelligent breakdowns I have read...and I have read a bunch. True blue Colts fan here and I will be in the Dome on Sunday. I truly respect the Patriots and what they are doing. I think this will be one of the few games that live up to the hype. I can honestly say that I will not be surprised by a blow-out or a close game...by EITHER team. I want the Colts to win but my stomach is already in knots. This is an epic battle of two great warlords. This is Achilles vs. Hector....

Both teams are the elite of the NFL...on a higher level than the rest of the 30 other teams. Which ever team wins this game will give them the bragging rights until the real test, or the real Super Bowl, the AFC Championship game.

I guess Pats fans would have been ignorant if they said the Pats were going to beat the Redskins by 3 touchdowns as well. Such a great secondary...and we all know how that turned out. You're doing a "disservice" by not giving this team the credit they deserve. Their making history, and haters can't stand it.

Rgron - Excellent point about the running up the score. What is depressing is the Pot calling the Kettle black. I saw that Steve Young thought the Pats were running up the score in the Redskins Game. I wonder if he would be interested in explaining why he had a 6th TD pass in the 4th quarter of the Super Bowl when his team was already up 41-18? I wonder if Steve Young thought it was necessary to beat the Atlanta Falcons 50-14 that season? Or the Chicago Bears 44-15 in the playoffs? Or the LA Raiders 44-14 in the opener?

When it is your team it is a dominant victory. When it is against your team, it is running up the score. I didn't see Joe Gibbs crying about the loss, because he is a Hall of Famer and a class act.

I respect Steve Young and always liked seeing the 49ers win. I appreciated how Montana and Young played the game. While I still respect him, I couldn't disagree with him more. I think some other people need to follow Joe Gibb's lead and stop worrying about it.

Choclate. Good Post. I think Football Outsiders has a valid point. The other starts I liked were the 99 Rams and 91 Redskins.

Dayton - Good post. I don't expect it to be quite that high scoring, although with me being only 14 points less, we are pretty much splitting hairs.

Chestman - Thank you for the comments. I am jealous. Wish I could get the chance to see such a historical game in person.

Boxscore - Lot of football to be played, but I agree. I can't see these teams not playing in the AFC Championship.

Skidzy - It could be a blowout. But I think the Colts have too good of a team to predict that. To compare predicting a pounding of the 4-2 rebuilding Redskins by 45 points and the defending champion Colts is two different things.

When Colts and Pat fans boast that the other stinks and that they will blow them out ruins what makes the game special.

Take basketball. What made the Lakers and Celtics so special in the 80s is they had each other to play against. What prevents a lot of people from ranking the Bulls higher than either team is that the Bulls didn't have that signature opponent to beat. Only a Laker team that was a shell of its title days had a title. Only the Jazz played in multiple finals.

When you say you are going to beat the Colts by 3 touchdowns and tear them down it only diminsishes what the Pats have done. What makes the Patriots run special is that the Steelers and Colts, two teams they have beaten in the playoffs have titles in the same span.

The 90's Cowboys were special because the Packers and 49ers got rings. The Steelers are special because of the Raiders, Dolphins, and Cowboys. Too many people are missing that point.

In order for your run to have historical meaning you have to beat a team with credentials. When you say things like that it not only diminishes the Colts, but the Pats as well.

I totally agree with your comment, but I don't think its Pats fans trying to say that Indy stinks. i think its more of Pats fans being excited that the Pats seem so good. I just thought it was a harsh comment to say "thinking the Pats will win by 3 TDs is ignorance", especially seeing as their margin of victory over the last 8 games have averaged around 21 points. and to make the comment that they haven't beaten anyone good, that argument is getting old. We heard it before the Washington game. No matter how bad a pro team is, whens the last time you saw a score of 42-7 at HALF TIME?

If New England can come straight out of the gate and dictate the pace of the game.
Then I do believe that they can have the upper hand in this game. But it may well be who turns the ball over less as to what'll make the difference in terms of a result. Even if the Pats are 2 TD favorites , I'm still of the opinion that this'll be a close run thing.

Ok all you mathmaticians out there. If the Colts had a bye week there will be an 8 game differential in the records of the Colts-Patriots records. There is. So if you figure that into the equation then the Patriots beat teams with at .710 and the Colts beat teams at .870. Both of those numbers are; a, more realistic and b, respectable. So lets not say the Patriots schedule is any easier than the Colts. Also look at the points differential that more than proves the Patriots are a more capable scoring team. And I dont want to hear about running up the score. They do it in high school, as was evident in a game last Friday that was all over the news.

I read every one of the posts on here, and I agree with StreetCred. Competition with other high caliber teams is what makes what your team does even better. When you romp thru your division and no one is competitive against you, it doesn't give you the fortitude to deal with adversity. The Pats haven't had to deal with any serious adversity all season long. The have blown out almost all of their opponents early in the game and there was little doubt of victory.

Also, I really liked the mention of Steve Young and the 49ers blowout wins in the 90s, but the problem is(not mine BTW) is that the league is different now, because of the way that society dictates that everyone is equal. I don't want to go a socialogical rant, but when you go to a youth league game and they don't keep score, isn't that just organized play time? What I am trying to say, is that the public outcry for "fairplay" is ridiculous. I heard Troy Aikman, on a local broadcast this morning saw that they are all grown men, and I agree. If you don't wanna get beat like that, do something about it..

That should scare the Pats fans, though, because like Bill Cowher said, someone is probably gonna cheap shot Tom Brady, and that is gonna suck.

If people grumble about running up the score in this game after this game is over, I would be flabbergasted. This is one game that I would like to see the Pats run up the score. I've seen Manning bring his team back with some serious scoring in the fourth quarter.

Everyone here predicts a high score, which makes me wonder if both teams will switch up the strategy and pick a defensive-minded game plan. I am certain Colts will do that, since it plays to their current perceived strength.

I predict the final score to be in the 20's or even lower. Patriots would have to make mistakes to lose, especially early. If they have a good week of practice (like before the Skins game), they may play another mistake-free game.

Colts will do everything in their power to keep this a low-scoring game, in my opinion. Pats may also switch it up to use their "take what defense gives" strategy that they are so frequently credited with.

My prediction:
Colts. 17-13

I don't think that'll happen in this game because the Colts also value their QB. Cheapshot on Brady in this game and the Colts better not play Mr. Commercial the rest of the game.

Hey, in al this lets not forget the 55 - 10 Ditka spanking put on the Patriots in Super Bowl. And he put a defensive lineman in to score a touchdown. Who claimed Ditka was classless, they crowned him a genious. Who was crying about running up the score in those days. I felt like an outcast cause I was the only Patriots fan I knew for more than 2 decades of living in Californication.

I will go with the Patriots, though it will be a close matchup, the Patriots will find a way to score just enough to beat the Colts. The score will be Patriots 27 - Colts 20. Patriots are simply a well balanced team that will cause trouble on both sides of the ball. Definitely the game of the year and potentially a game for the ages. Go Pats!!

fantastic write up. i know i'm a homer but i honestly believe the patriots simply crush the colts. they are playing on level, the likes i've never seen b4. they will make the colts look like this:

I agree with TOPHATAL, the winning team will be the one with fewer turn-overs. They are so evenly matched, that a random fumble or INT could (and will) determine the outcome of this historic game.

As a Pats fan with many Colt fan friends, I dont think anyone is going in to this game with a knot-free stomach.

Its the same feeling I had on Christmas Eve when I was a kid.

Also, bad news for Colts - Marvin and Dwight did not practice this week. This gives pats an even greater advantage.

You've got to be kidding. Is a playoff spot being decided by this game? It is a middle season game and will have little bearing on the rest of the year for either team...
Still fantastic game and looking forward to watching.

Among your list of best regular season games, I neglected to see the famous "No Punt" game of 1992 with the Bills and 49ers. Steve Young and Jim Kelly both throw for over 400 yards and three touchdowns in the first game in NFL history not to have a single pumt. Buffalo won 34-31.

Great Article. The reality of this matchup is that everyone will realize after the Pats belittle the Colts at home, that you are witnessing history! This Patriots team will be the most dominant team ever to walk on the field in NFL histroy. They will demolish all the records and the 3 Super Bowl rings wont mean anything compared to what Brady and Belichick are about to do. The Dynasty starts this season! Brady did it 3 times with a bunch of nobodies, what can he do now with this receiving core???

Little meaning? Bull####.

Homefield advantage in the playoffs likely rides on this game. That can & likely will be VERY significant.

The Patriots haven't been hit hard yet this year - haven't had to weather a storm yet. How will they handle not being two touchdowns ahead at the half? How will they handle being behind in the 2nd quarter? How will they handle having to punt a couple of times?

Maybe they cruise. I don't think so - in fact, I suspect the Colts will win in a manner that significantly changes the way both teams are talked about for the rest of the season.

skidzy - Indy is winning their games by over 17 ppg. You are saying that you expect them to 38 points different than what they have done all season. I think that is a bit arrogant, no matter how the Pats have done.

tophatal & dommy - I agree

Colts - Get a refund from your math teacher. The Colts opponents have a winning % of .540 (27 wins /50 total games). The Pats is .414 (24 wins/58 total games). This 8 games and the bye you are talking about have nothing to do with that. I do agree people need to quit complaining about the score.

QuikPony - Very well put and well thought out.

I'LL TELL YOU..THE SAME THING THEY'VE DONE THE LAST TIME WE BEAT THEM AT HOME...."N.O.T.H.I.N.G."!!! GO HOME ..9-1!!!!! WITH ALOT OF HEARING PROBLEMS!!!!LOL!!

xoskel,
I didn't mean that the colts would knock him out, not on purpose, I just meant that one of the other teams that they still have to play...maybe the dolphins, especially if those guys from 72 "ask" them to.

xoskel - I don't think the Pats will ever get that far ahead, but it is well taken.

jjk23 - I have a friend that thinks the same thing. Could happen, but I think the offenses are too good. Should at least get to the 20s, and probably in the 30s.

xoskel - I agree. I don't think the Colts would do that. It would be someone like the Redskins, a team that doesn't play them every year with not as much to lose.

Coltsbound - I agree. This is nothing new. The difference is that people liked Ditka, Montana, and Young. People don't like The Hood.

Tiger - Thank you.

Public - Priceless. I think it will be closer, as the Colts have beaten people by a large margin too. Just not like the Pats.

Driver - Reminds me of the old 49ers and Cowboys or 49ers and Packers games. I agree.

JLK - We're talkin about PRACTICE!!!, lol.

Jerks - That isn't what I said. Got to read it closer. I said the game is huge for both teams, as it will decide home field. Mentally, I think it is bigger for the Pats. If the Pats lose this game by 1 point, it will be a much bigger blow to them mentally than if the Colts lost by 1 point. Only thing either team can't afford mentally is a
blowout.

812 - I can't fault you for feeling that way at all. Good luck.

bobb - It didn't make the criteria. They didn't play each other later in the season and weren't in the same conference. But that was a great game.

Marc - I think the window is 2, maybe 3 years. Linebackers are getting older and how will Moss be in 2 years. Plus if the Colts lose, how do they respond the next year? What do the Chargers do? Too many variables to call that shot.

812 - Would of, if this, if that. Got to go with what is on the field. The 04 division wasn't very tough for the Colts either, and they never did this. I think you are assuming too many things.

Dave - Again, I was tallking from a mental perspective, not on home field. I think a loss by the Pats is more mentally damaging than for the Colts, based on the offseason and the start. If you read it again, you'll see that. Regardless, its hard to have a close game when you are blowing everyone away. Besides, do you honestly believe The Hood and Brady will lock up in a close game??? This isn't the first time Brady has had a good team. They might lose, but not because they lock up and choke under pressure.

812 - Pats didn't have those WR last year and Brady has won in that dome before. Until the last 3 meetings, it was the Colts that couldn't beat the Pats. I dont' think last years game has a lot of bearing on this one. Both teams are better since then.

to be honest with you, i think newengland will win by a blow out. i'd say, 48-28... or atleast 17 pts.

why? because we can all smell it - the patriots are out for revenge. and they have been preparing for this game. they feel like they are the underdogs. and they are very very serious.

it will be exciting to watch because manning can be explosive. but believe me, he will be checked again, and again, and again. at the end of the 3rd quarter, the dome will be silent and the colts fans will go home broken hearted to the score of 48-28... or atleast 17pts. i'm just being honest with you.

patriots will not choke under pressure; vegas favors them by an ever-increasing margin.

Both teams will be cautious: it will be a lower-scoring, and possibly a boring game. Anyone waiting for an offensive popcorn-and-pepsi showdown will be sorely disappointed.

Tom Brady said that Manning is a better passer, actor and ####ed more supermodels at one of the press conferences. Brady also thinks Peyton may have a bigger ####. NFL smacks of WWE, both sides trying to keep everyone, especially each other, as distracted as possible. In this category, advantage goes to the colts, but pats will not choke.

nautz, I really don't think pats are out for revenge.
Their number one goal is to feel out the colts to prep for the ever-so-important afc championship game. 48 points is not a realistic number to expect for either team to put up. Patriots didn't put up that much on the jets, and we know how good jets defense is compared to the colts.
Colts wouldn't put up 48 if they had the opportunity, because they are concerned about Harrison and Manning wear-and-tear. It's the middle of the #### season! Believe me, neither team would sacrifice their QB to win here. And colts aren't a joke like dolphins or inexperienced like the skins.

Its plain and simple...the parity in this league is all at a subpar level. Even the Colts play down to a level that is just enough to beat the Titans by 2 and Houston by 6. Pats play at a level that noone can achieve. It doesn't matter who is on the field from the Dolts to the Cowboys. They will score and they will win. When the Colts get slaughtered this weekend...will it be enough to silence all these colts fans or are they gonna say wait till the AFC Championship game. Rings Brady 3 Petyon - 1. End of argument

Great blog!! But I don’t entirely agree, I believe the Pats will steamroll over the Colts and my reasons are:

Colts have really not played a strong defensive team. The only team with a strong defense is Tennessee and the Colts struggled against them. You might say “neither have the Pats.” Well I beg to differ. Pats played Cowboys when they had the number 2 defense and the Pats steamrolled over them causing their defensive ranking to drop. The Pats played the Skins who were ranked 5th in pass defense and again the Pats crushed them causing them to drop considerably in their defensive rankings.

For people who think the Pats run up the numbers just think, the world has not seen Brady with the caliber of receivers Peyton has had all along. If the Pats truly wanted to run up the score they would and could have beaten any team they’ve played this year by a hell of a lot more points. The Pats can’t help they are THAT GOOD!

The one point everyone misses about the pats running up the score is this: Bill never appreciated that Manning got the MVP's and press accolades etc. when Brady was busy winning Super Bowls. (Funny how it's reversed with the Colts not getting credit for their stellar season because of the Pats stats). Now that Manning has a ring, Bill want's to settle the "Who's the best" issue by breaking every offensive record in the books. That's why they are pushing for points in a game that's already over. It would only take one or two poor games to drop below record pace in many categories, so Bill's staying on the gas till the buzzer goes off. It has nothing to do with being pissed about camera-gate. He wants his QB & team recognized as the best ever, and doesn't care if he needs to stomp on some whinners to do it! The fact that getting Brady recognized as the best ever will probably do the same for him as well probably doesn't hurt either.

sbsox1, your theory about pats running up the score to set records is ridiculous. They are doing it to earn a reputation and intimidate opponents. They are doing it to mislead people about their true nature and philosophy. Patriots are still a defensive team, and, despite what people say, pats and colts did NOT trade identities. They are just trying to deceive each other into making mistakes. Sure Pats have more weapons than last year, but they are really not that different and they have weaknesses in their running game. They want people to think they will throw late in the game.
Pats would never really do this in a close game, against an opponent they respected. Nobody would - it's stupid.

To reiterate: this Sunday,
17-13 Colts

Sbsox: I disagree. I don’t think Belichick or Brady care about the stats. I think it has everything to do with what I’ve thought all along.

Brady makes receivers look good. Manning is only as good as his receivers.

If you took Manning and put him on the
