BEST STAT & WORST: Jokerswild put up some beautiful stats bein' logged by Cliff Lee of the Indians today, dude's a phenomenal 6-0 witha 0.81 era this year. I dunno if any pitcher that I can remember ever had a start like that...Those are Gibsonesque or Koufax-like numbers, or maybe numbers some hot-shot still in high school might enjoy. Now I'm jus goin' from memory alone and the name Valenzuela seems to keep poppin' up, but I dunno fer sure...I may do some checkin' onnit later...
Anyway, it got me thinkin' bout stats, which i've always believed that stats are the engine that drives a whole lot of the attraction of baseball, or any sport. It's also why I despise Selig and Fehr...but that's another story...
Having said that, Da Stevo is gonna show you what I think is the most beautiful stat in baseball. More than anything it's a stat that validates the consistency o####uy outta St. Louis, aptly nicknamed: "The Man".
.......ARE YAW"LL READY FERDIS.....?!?!?!?
Total Hits at Home:1815
Total Hits on Road:1815
Total Hits Career: 3630
Anybody out there gotta prettier one?
Worst stat? 73* and 762*
UPDATE: "Valenzuela's efforts made him the odds-on favorite to be the league's top rookie in 1981, and he didn't disappoint, starting the season 8-0 with four shutouts and an ERA of 0.50. ..."...Wikipedia...(took 10 seconds....great fad.... this Internet...)
STEVO--Thanks for the plug--and I dont know for sure but I think Nolan Ryan might have something that compairs but Im at work and can't check untill later,,,,And the Stan Musial stats are awesome
Stevo; Manny bein Manny played 7 years and 22 games wit da Indians and batted .319
and now 7years and 35 games with the sox and batted .319 check it quik, it will probably change soon but thats consistancy
with Clevland 1086 hits 236 hrs 804 rbi
with boston 1165 hits 261 hrs 824 rbi
blueorange, your on the money, manny is the man, I think he is pissed off today, when 1-5 last night, and lost, on some lucky hits by the tigers, lugo needs to sit 9 errors so far, one of the reasons, they lost!
18 zebra...Heard onna talk-show the other day that Manny would walk back toda dug-out after strikin' out and have very cavalier attitude 'bout it, just didn't seem to care...The guy that was bein' interviewed said that that was becuz he always KNEW that he would get his...never worried him at all...
Stan is the MAN. Awsome always glad to see somthing about stan hes still a loyal person hes like 90 but still takes his time to come to games. couldnt meet a nicer guy
Thanx soda...Met the guy in the Astrodome in '65, he was retired then, wearin' a sharp suit...He WUZ a nice guy, no doubt...It was a big thrill to meet the guy...class act fer sure..
You can take this consistency much further as Stan The Man's lifetime BA is .331 and within several percentage points home and away, day and night games, lefties and righties.
Regardless of what team you may root for...without question men like Musial IS what BASEBALL ought to be!!! Other than Aaron, Musial is by far, the MOST underated GREAT hitter of all time!!!They both went about their business with such consistancy for sooo many years...many people just took them for granted...good job on this one Stevo..although I STILL believe Maris is not HOF worthy...;)
The landscape has changed since the days of Musial and Banks, no doubt..It is funny tho'..usually whenya hear 'bout Musial, if you hear 'bout 'im at all when discissing "greats" of the game...he's usually an afterthought...but his career speaks for itself.
I understand why you think Maris doesn't belong in the HOF...My stance on Maris is based on the fallout FROM the steroids era....He's STILL the only guy we know fer sure that ever hit 61 Legally..and the guys that were doin' em (roids, HGH) were chasin' that Holy Grail at any cost..61 is STILL the record in my eyes...Thanx!
Musial's numbers were off the charts, but you want to hear the real name you should all be in awe about.
Remember Pete Rose. Plain and simple, he got more hits then... anyone else... Keep that out of the hall of fame, what's your answer when every kid says "Who got the most hits?"
king68....I'd tell the kid who got the most hits and that he wuzza helluva ballplayer, but I'd also tell him that he broke the rules and that he made the same mistake a guy named Roger Clemens made...Both of 'em sold the truth short..
..as far as Giamatti is concerened, he is to me without question, the very BEST commish MLB could've ever hoped for...
I'd also tell him that Rose's lifetime batting average wuz about 60-65 points less than Ty Cobbs..
Thanx for droppin' in and I DO appreciate yer take...you're not alone in your feelings 'bout Rose..I jus' happen to disagree...
Stevo...after many hours of researching...you'll find this amazing (I hope)..in the history of baseball only 2 men have ever had over 1600 RBIS,1600 Runs,3000 Hits,4550 Total bases,OBP of over .400,and had a BA of over .330..They were Ty Cobb and Stan Musial!!! To me, total bases is the true indicator of a true hitter..it factors in not ONLY HR's but singles, doubles, and triples as well...it demonstrates the completeness of a ball player...Aaron is over 700 YES 700 TB's above the 2nd place man (Musial)...a record that may never be broken!!! But anyway, when there are ONLY 2 men in the history of baseball to have ALL these credentials..is amazing!!! I know I'll get some flack when I say this...but as you pointed out...numbers speak for themselves..who's the GREATEST LIVING baseball player at this point in time???...STAN THE MAN that's who..NOT Willie Mays...and this is coming from a Cub fan!!!
Gnarly....I gotta admit...I did not know that...and you might have trumped me as far as beautiful statistics are concerned...THAT iz impressive...good job!
For what it's werth...I still think that Mays is the greatest ALL-ROUND baseball player that ever lived.....A former commissioner said this 'bout Stan tho':
Ford Frick: "Here stands baseball's perfect warrior. Here stands baseball's perfect knight."
Well Stevo...knew I was going to get some flack on this about Mays...without a doubt Mays had the ability and "should" be rated amoung the best BUT his strength was also his curse..what I'm saying is can you imagine IF Musial or Ted Williams had SPEED and IF May's didn't? Musial and Williams would have hit in the .360 range and Mays at best would be a .270 hitter....He had a GOD given talent and "should've" used it more whereas Musial didn't but STILL produced...see what I'm getting at? The point is....let the stats be as they may..they never lie! Musial had more doubles and triples than Mays...you would think Mays with his speed wouldve had more wouldn't ya? Musial's hitting out trumps May's "ability" in my eye. Everyone in our age group knows that Curt Flood was a better fielder than May's too...thus May's wasn't a premier centerfielder even in his own era...let the stats dictate the greatness of a man..being a .330 hitter is VASTLY better than a .300 one. I wouldn't kick either off my team however ;)
gnarly....Mays DID have the speed and I saw Mays play alot and trust me...the dude wuz THAT good..and to say he wasn't "a premier centerfielder"..?!?!?
With all due respect...You may be the only person I ever heard in the ENTIRE universe to ever say that...lol
"All-Round" iz the key word here...and that encompasses...speed....
It was nice to play but when the referee let an illegal play go by in front of him,and close his eyes as the journalist hand had a machine gun under coat,I just could not believe it,in the war the journalist go to front linesto cath the news, not to take sides or muchless to give the the enemy(contender)a gun the disable my jeep and almost kill me,I said I got better thing to do as an IT security,so Iam out here,to drive a TANK and continio with my goals and quest to cath the real killers I set my self to get,as thank you all I say dont come to my USA without a permmision, ther will not be any mercy there for the enemy or those who feel brave, and bother my old man,he aint got clue but he does not have to,he got me and me =12 dhickox,
