Thrashers Sign Hainsey.
Jul 02, 2008 | 1:41PM | report this

The Atlanta Thrashers lost out in the bidding war for Brian Campbell but managed to find a good puckmoving defenseman on the second day of the NHL’s UFA market, signing Ron Hainsey to a five-year, $22.5 million contract.

Hainsey will earn $4.5 million per season over the next five years against the Thrashers cap, a considerable raise over the $900K he earned last season with the Columbus Blue Jackets and about $1 million more than he was anticipated to make in this year’s UFA market.

It was a move GM Don Waddell desperately needed to make after having deal away promising Braydon Coburn in February 2007 for a fading Alexei Zhitnik whom in turn Waddell recently bought out of the remainder of his contrat.

The Thrashers have lacked a blueliner to anchor their powerplay and jump-start their offensive game for some time and Hainsey should be capable of filling that role and play big minutes on the Atlanta blueline.

He really thrived over the past two seasons in Columbus for head coach Ken Hitchcock and the skills he learned there should make him a worthwhile addition in Atlanta.

This is the guy I wanted for the Blackhawks if they couldn't land Brian Campbell. Good move for the Thrashers. In my mind, he was the 2nd best puck moving D-man out there this off season.

YOu look at deals like this one, the ones Streit and Campbell got - and all of a sudden the Wade Redden deal looks much better.

If Rozsival is more willing to unload his shot then the Rangers will have 2 solid QBs for their power play (which ranked 25th in the league last year)

Indeed, ChipS. Still, I'm not a fan of the Redden contract simply because of the length. NHL2009 better allow for a 4- 5- and 6- year contract option.

Hainsey has the ability to grow into this contract, though. It's a darn good signing.

Good luck to Hainsey....He is been one of my favorite players in C-town. Always consistant...but not a fighter. He does move the puck well and sees the ice well. He has a nice shot from out front too!

Thanks Goodness he's gone. Playing adult league hockey, he was the joke of the locker room. Yeah he's consistent, consistent at letting pucks through his legs or getting deked by pressing offenseman. I'm so glad to see him go, Thrasher fans you'll see what I mean next year.

By the way, everyone keeps saying he's a puck moving defenseman, yet that's what we need in C-Bus. If he truly was, why would we dump him?
