Canucks Sign Johnson.
Jul 01, 2008 | 8:18PM | report this

The Vancouver Canucks may be in a bidding war for Mats Sundin and Marian Hossa but they managed to make a lesser signing of a UFA forward today.

Former St. Louis Blues Blues checking forward Ryan Johnson has reportedly signed a two-year, $2.4 million contract with the Canucks.

Johnson’s a versatile forward who can play center and left wing and should provide the Canucks checking lines with valuable depth and experience.

The Flames signed another Ryan today, Ryan Wilson. He lead all OHL defensemen in scoring last season with 71 points in 58 games playing for Sarnia. He was also ranked the hardest hitter and had the hardest shot (according to the Sting's website). He signed as an undrafted free agent. How was this kid not drafted? THis seems like a great acquisition. what am i missing?

Spector: Great site, keep it up. On Johnson to BC - do you think we seriously need any more checking forwards? We have about six or seven already and only the Sedins to carry the offense. I was hoping for an all-star winger (rather obvious as to whom) for the Sedin line and one other quality offensive forward. We've got the D (if they can stay healthy this year) and obviously no problems between the pipes. Scoring is our obvious issue and Johnson isn't going to be doing much of that.

Flamesfan: Good question. He had 269 points in 316 career OHL games (not bad for a defenseman), played in an All-Star team and has won a U-17 world championship. How did (most) scouts miss him?
