Briere Signs with Flyers.
Jul 01, 2007 | 12:44PM | report this

The Buffalo News reported Daniel Briere text-messaged that he's agreed to sign with the Philadelphia Flyers.

Briere signed a whopping 8 year, $52 million contract with the Flyers, which will average $6.5million per season against the Flyers cap but will be front-loaded, paying him $10 million for next season, making him the league’s high paid player next season.

What’s more, the contract also includes a “no-movement” clause, meaning Briere cannot be traded, waived or bought out without his permission.

Looks like GM Paul Holmgren picked up the trait of signing free agents to hefty contracts from predecessor Bob Clarke. The one thing he has done right, however, is that by “front-loading” the contract he makes it easier to perhaps move Briere in the later years of this deal should his play falter.

Provided, of course, if Briere gives his blessing.

Still, both the money and the tenure are huge, proving once again that a salary cap doesn’t prevent general managers from over-paying for UFA talent.

Don’t get me wrong, Briere’s a very talented player, posting a career -high 95 points 81 games during the 2006-07 season and 15 points in 16 games during the 2007 playoffs.

The Flyers have been enamoured of Briere ever since he burned them in the 2006 playoffs and made it their intent to land him.

But the Flyers are expecting Briere, who turns 30 in October, to post those kind of numbers on a regular basis. That could be expecting too much from a player who never reached those kind of numbers before, and did so on a young, fast Sabres team that suited his playing style.

And despite his gaudy post-season numbers in 2007, Briere came under criticism in this year’s playoffs for his consistency, having been out-shone by teammate and fellow UFA Chris Drury.

It remains to be seen if Briere’s a good fit in Philadelphia. If he is, Holmgren will look like a genius, but if not, he’s saddled himself with a hefty contract and a player who has the final say on where he goes if Holmgren tries to move him later on.

The Flyers were already just over $42 million committed to 19 players for next season prior to the Briere signing, which will put them at over $48 million for 20 players. While they’re still under the cap, GM Paul Holmgren will likely still want to free up some cap room as the summer progresses.

One possibility is by trading Joni Pitkanen, another is perhaps placing Mike Rathje and his $3.5 million for next season on the long-term injury list provided he’s proven medically unfit to play by the league.

The Montreal Canadiens had been in the bidding for Briere, even rumored to have offered a six-year, $42 million offer but the Flyers blew that out of the water. GM Bob Gainey will now have to turn his attention elsewhere and will undoubtedly feel the wrath of the Quebec media for failing to overpay for Briere.

Let's hear it for the Sabres... Way to go... let's await Drurys departure. I guess Mair does more for the team than Breire...

8-years at $52M... cap number is $6.5, but it's another front-loaded contract. Supposedly he's getting the $10M max the first few years of it...

Jeez...

edit: AND a NTC.....

Well i don't dislike the signing i just dislike the contract, 8 years?!?! with a NTC essentially. I'm sure he'll replace Carter on the first line since Carter was unready to take that role. But I think this signing isn't as bad as people make it to be it's just that the contract is so long.

I don't think this contract is "stupid." At least not at this moment, anyway. Risky? Sure. It's certainly possible Briere doesn't live up to the dollars in this deal. But since the Canadiens were also willing to throw big bucks at him, the Flyers sweetened the deal (more years and a no movement clause). Holmgren is proving himself to be no joke as far as aggressiveness is concerned. But I guess we'll see pretty soon if these moves were wise as well.

I'm a flyers fan, have been for a while, but when will they figure their free agency problems? Gomez would have been the better fit and... what about the money? Over paying three times this year... how disappointing for the league in general...

It's all about the money... Nevermind that the Flyers will likely continue their losing ways for at least another year. And those Philly fans? Better have your A game every nite, Danny. They aren't quite as forgiving as we are in Buffalo.
Good Luck!

You have got to be kidding me...

What are the flyers thinking?

All Hockey eyes will be on the Flyers this season that is for sure, you go spend that kind of money and strap yourself with those kind of contracts they best not miss the playoffs that is for sure...

I do not think I am out of line by saying the pressure is on big time in philly...

Holy Cow said the man with the swiss cheese....

8 year 52 million with a no movement clause and 10 million for the first season... This is not a good move by the Flyers at all, in my opinion they have shot theirselves in the foot...

They can't even put him on waivers if he starts to go down hill with out his permission, Flyers fans should be outraged over this contract. It has been dumb moves like this in the past that have come back to haunt the Flyers...

I can not wait for the season to start...

Sometimes you've got to make a bold move to fall on your face. The Flyers needed a number one center, and there you are. Their offer showed (just as their deal with Nashville and their trade of Pitkanen) that new management is going to do whatever it takes to erase the memory of last year. Did they overpay? Of course. Are most of the teams who land the A-listers going to also overpay? Of course. He makes the team a lot better and more importantly adds a face that Gagne could not. I agree that the pressure is on, but this is not a Hatcher and Rathje deal here. Briere is a dynamic and exciting offensive weapon and the overhaul of the slow plodding Flyers is well underway. I give them kudos for knowing what they wanted and going out and getting it..we'll see if they've done enough to finish the job however.

As a lifelong Sabres fan I am sorry to see both Drury and Briere go, but at least the Sabres realized that there is no way that Briere is worth this kind of money. It is 6.5 million overall average over 8 years, but 1/5th of a 2007 cap of 50 million for one guy and a no movement clause as well ?? Drury is getting about 7 Million average for his 3 year deal and the Rangers are the winners as he was much more valuable to the Sabres since we (rumored) offered him around 6 million per year before he signed.

Great work by Homer. They had to give Briere a monster deal - they had no choice - you can't go into the season with Carter, Richards, and Umberger your only centers. At the end of the day, 6.5 million is a reasonable cap hit for a guy who had 95 points last year.

Pitkanen has a ton of potential, but he was a malcontent and a cancer in the locker room. They're getting another young player with lots of potential in Lupul, and a solid veteran D-Man in Smith, something they also needed.

Their lineup will look something like this, and it's pretty solid...

Gagne-Briere-Knuble
Lupul-Carter-Hartnell
Upshall-Richards-Kapanen
Eager-Umberger-Potulney

Timmonen-Kukkonen
Smith-Coburn
Picard-Hatcher
Jones-Gauthier

According to philadelphiaflyers.com, "Briere admitted that other teams even offered a little more money than the Flyers." So he must have really wanted to go to philly (rumor was Marty Biron had been really selling him on the team.)

No question that 8 years, $52M is a lot for any player, but with the increasing salary cap, that's about the market price for a #1 center, which was clearly the Flyer's biggest need. I don't think my apartment is worth $1400 a month, but I kinda need the roof over my head and that's what apartments cost here.

I personally thought Gomez was the best fit to put between Gagne and Knuble, but I'm excited for Briere's upside. I just hope his numbers aren't only a product of the fast style played in Buffalo.

Briere isn't worth nearly this ammount of money, but the Flyers looked so bad last year. You know it felt like an early Christmas present to see them such so much last year. This has definatly got to get rid of the rumors linking Forsberg to the Flyers. The Flyers are now looking pretty good up front, but I don't expect them to be a powerhouse team by anymeans.

NOOOOOOO :'( I'm not agree of the reason of Briere to go with the Flyers... He sais ''I think that Philadelhia is a better team than Canadiens'' If i look last season... Which team finished 30th in NHL position??? Philadelphia so Montreal is a better team than them. Yes Flyers have Gagné, Biron and others frenchs friends of Briere but that's not a reason... Habitually when a player like Briere who grew up in Montreal prefer to play for this team and we know than it's a dream for a Montreal player to play for Montreal Canadiens so whatever, i am decepointed of the reaction and the comments of Daniel.
