Kings Trade Mattias Norstrom.
Feb 27, 2007 | 12:07PM | report this

TSN reports the Los Angeles Kings have trade team captain Mattias Norstrom to the Dallas Stars.

I'm still awaiting full details of the return on this. My apologies for not updating this earlier but the Ryan Smyth trade hit just after this broke.

This is a significant move by the Stars to add more defensive depth and leadership to their blueline corps. Norstrom is respected as one of the league's better defensive blueliners who plays a clean physical game.

Players like Nostrom are coveted by playoff bound clubs so give full marks to Stars GM Doug Armstrong for pulling this off.

As for the Kings, the rebuilding continues under GM Dean Lombardi, who clears over $4 million in cap space for next season by moving Norstrom.

**UPDATE** The Dallas Morning News reports the following: " Johan Fransson, Jaroslav Modry and
a first, second and third to LA for a Norstrom, a key propect and a third and fourth."

Nordstrom is not going to take the Kings anywhere. I love the guy, but he's in his 13th year and on a horrible team. We're rebuilding. I don't like seeing him go, but if it helps the team, it has to be done.

I've had Lombardi as a GM for the Sharks, your team is finished, he's an #### and things will only get worst, expect the team to tank. He's the modern day version of the GM and owner of the Chiefs in Slapshot.

You can't blame Crawford or Lombardi for the team we have. They're doing the best with what they've got. Have patience. Look at what we have going into next season: Frolov, Brown, Kopitar, Jack Johnson, LaBarbra, Cammallari, Armstrong, O'Sullivan, Lubo...and they'll all, except for Johnson, have another year of being in the NHL under their belts. Talk about a fast-food nation. Be patient. Rome wasn't built in a day.

Edit:
From Kukla's Corner:

"The Islanders are putting the finishing touches on a deal for Edmonton captain Ryan Smyth. In exchange, the Oilers will receive former Islanders’ first-round draft picks Ryan O’Marra and Robert Nilsson plus the Islanders’ first-round pick this year."

depending on who the kings got in return it's really not that bad of trade. norstrom isn't part of the kings future. by the time the kings are competitors again norstrom will be pretty old. still... it's a little shocking as a kings fan, and to a division rivial. matty's been warrior for the kings for so many years. best of luck to him.

Apparently the hold up is that the Kings can't locate Norstrom to tell him he's been traded. If anyone sees Norstrom, please tellhim to call his General Manager.

Matty has been the heart and soul of the never ending rebuilding Kings for so long, I can't believe they traded him. He is one of the few reasons I've remained a Kings fan. Probably not buying season tickets next year. Bad move by the Kings.

I love how the first people to comment on this trade said it was a "horrible trade" without even knowing what the return was. We'll see how the trade works out though, it would have been nice to land a top D prospect like Coburn, Kukkonen, Parent or Welch who were all shipped earlier. I still can't believe Roberts landed the Pens Welch.

The Kings shipped their off captain, along with forward Konstantin Pushkarev and third and fourth-round picks in 2007 in exchange for defenceman Jaroslav Modry, prospect Johan Fransson, second and third-round picks in 2007 and a 2008 first-round selection.

Short term it looks good for the Stars. It is disturbing that Armstrong is trading away first round draft picks like a Canadian logger pounds down beer. Furthermore, the Stars still failed to pick-up someone who can put the puck in the net. I see 0-1 and 1-0 in their future...

"This is a significant move by the Stars to add more defensive depth and leadership to their blueline corps." I love this quote. They're referring to Dallas dumping Modry on the Kings. Any blueline would be better without him. And by the way, Lombardi, you could have just kicked me in the nuts and called it a day when you traded Conroy. Thanks ####!

hockeyrules22, saying a trade "sucks" before you know the return is the MOST IGNORANT THING you can possibly do. This team is reloading and Norstrom is old and has a big contract for next year. We'll see how good this return ends up being. A 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and Fransson is pretty good. Of course a top prospect could have been great, but this is a decent return. Obviously I would have liked to get Welch, Goglioski, or Letang from Pittsburgh but I guess they though Roberts alone was worth Welch which I think is stupid.

How many times this season did Matty literally pick the puck up from behind his net and throw up right up the middle? I'm no pro but when I played if anyone did that they had ladders next practice. LoL Would you whiny kings fan rather have seen Anze go for Modano? I dont think so DL Got a ton of picks and cleared up huge cap space for next year.

King99 and Uguyzrdum,
Johan Fransson a good prospect???Do you guys know who he is...a 22 year old undersized Sweed who didn't even grow up playing in the top sweedish league. It is not like he is a young kid looking to develop his body still. Pushkarev was not great but he had at least a few NHL games. How did Fransson do at the '05 World Jr's no points.
The first round pick is in '08 do you guys even know any of the top ten prospects for '08. Not to mention this year is one of the weekest drafts in years.
I don't have problem trading to rebuild but a stay at home D-man like Nordstrom should have gotten more of a premium. Another bad move for Lombardi!

Stop thinking with your hearts instead of your heads. Matty has been mediocre this year. Lombardi knows what he's doing. The Sharks are where they are now mostly because of his work. He put all the pieces together and made the Sharks a perennial favorite in the West. He got Cheechoo, he brought in the pieces used to get Thornton. His only bad move was Cloutier. The Kings need to get younger on the back line and this is a step towards that. Matty is a veteran on a young team. Its tough to see the Captain go but it had to be done. I've been a Kings fan my entire life and while its sad, its the right move and a good return.

Oh and honestly its tough to take opinions seriously when you can not spell the man's name correctly. Its "Norstrom" not "Nordstrom." He doesn't own retail stores, he's a gritty swede.

I'll admit Norstrom was one of my favorite Kings players, but I am very happy to see him going to a team that he can contribute to in the twilight of his career and that gives him a shot at the Cup. Yes it sucks to see him go and yes it sucks to sit through another losing season, but Lombardi is doing a terrific job. Matty is 35. By the time the Kings are ready to contend he'll be 37 or 38. Lombardi made a wise move for the organization in the long run. It appears that too many Kings fans on this blog just want to crucify Lombardi and Crawford in their first year and #### all over them for the suck year the Kings are having. Well boo-hoo. Look at the positives. Lombardi dumped a ton of salary. The Kings now have two first rounders and three second rounders in what is supposed to be a deep 2008 NHL draft. We got Cliche, Fransson and Jack Johnson. Even if Cliche doesn't produce like Avery or Fransson ends up a depth defenseman we got Jack Friggin' Johnson for Gleason and Belanger. Quit crying all of you Lombardi haters! You're going to feel like douchebags when the Kings are contenders.

Anns21, you will regret not re-upping on the season seats if for no other reason than Jack Johnson. The kid is mean, gifted, and confident. He could be Dion Phaneuf next year.

Lombardi is doing a fine job, and those Shark fans that feel we're doomed forget that much of your current Stanley Cup dreams are based on players brought in by Lombardi.

As for this deal, it's a good one. It's not in line with much of the other ridiculousness that's going on out there, especially for a player that isn't going to be an UFA, but it's still strong. The thing that kills me is did it have to be the Stars. Seriously short of the Ducks is there a worse place for Norstrom and Pushkarev to end up. That's going to sting every time they lace up against the Kings. Fransson is an interesting prospect, if they can get him under contract it will be a win for the Kings, especially with their current shortage of defensive prospects behind Johnson.

I would have hoped Lombardi could have gotten more like what Edmonton got for Smyth. Ok, maybe that's like comparing apples and oranges, forwards and defensemen. But Norstrom still has another year on his contract, is one of the best defensive defensemen in the league, and generally d-men are more valuable at the trading deadline and into the playoffs. Not to mention that we're relieving the Dallas of Modry's contract.

There was a lot of craziness out there this year, and I'm sure a lot of general managers are going to regret some of the moves they made, and likely loose their jobs because of it. But Lombardi did fine. Nothing crazy

Kinger, I never said Fransson was or was not good, I said the return as a whole "1st, 2nd, 3rd, Fransson" is pretty good. We have a bunch of cap space now for next season to go out and grab a top dman. 2 picks in the first round of 2008's draft is going to be good as well. We also have 2 picks in the 2nd round of 2008, that's 4 picks in the top 6 that DL will have to play with.

Uguyzrdum,
First of all if DL says he is good that is good enough for you??? He said Cloutier was good? Your head is so far up his #### you don't know what you are talking about. Yes maybe Pushkarev didn't have heart, skill, or whatever to make it in the NHL, but how did Fransson do in the NHL? Oh...and I like how at 22 years old Fransson still has time to develop, but Push will, "end up playing out his career in Europe" well they are the same age Mr. Hockey, and if Europe is so bad where do you think you are getting Fransson from...you don't know ####! Why can't you get like Biron from Buff.

As for the Blake to San Jose

Blake has a full no trade clause.

Sixty8ight makes a great point about the passion of LA Kings hockey fans. We've been suffering so long it'll be worth the reward when this organiztion starts winning. I'm just surprised at how polarized the fans are regarding Lombardi. Anybody remember Nick Beverly? How about Sam McMaster? He traded Zhitnik for Phillipe Boucher and Grant Fuhr. By the time Boucher panned out he bolted for Dallas and Fuhr never played well for the Kings. So what if Lombardi traded for Cloutier. Did anyone really think he was going to be this bad?
