I can’t remember another topic more beaten to death in NASCAR. The Car of Tomorrow becomes the Car of Today. Deal with it.
It is not like NASCAR is going to scrap the idea. It’s not like they listen to the fans, the teams, or even the drivers. When they say jump, the collective world is in danger of being thrown from its orbit.
Teams have spent millions building a brand new fleet of cars. The inspection process has made every team get to Bristol this weekend a day early, just to assure enough time to get through the 43 car field. The aspirin is being handed out like candy, and the harder stuff will still come up short for the headaches to ensue this weekend. It’s inevitable. It’s the COT. And there is nothing anyone can do about it.
So enough is enough. The sky is blue. Life isn’t fair. NASCAR isn’t fair. Put the drivers in the seats, drop the green flag, and let’s see what happens. I am sick of hearing about the Car of Tomorrow, because it is now the Car of Today.
Yep sounds like a good idea to me Sid.. Lets see what this car can deliver but I think it will fail and make NSCAR look stupid. All I would like to see is a good race with out controversal issues.
I'm all fo the Car Of Today, ot "Tommor" or whatever its called.
A universal car will make it a lot harder for known cheaters like Ray Evernham, Hendricks, and Chad Knaus to sneak through inpection.
maybe we can actually have some drivers that can actualt Drive win more instead of guys that run illegally and do nothing but kiss up to every sponsor they can think of.
Don't count on it. It's just like a video game, you can't cheat the game until your learn about it first.
I don't expect the crew chiefs to attempt any "questionable" advantages until they learn a little more about the car and inspection processes. Remember, at each track the car will handle differently, so notes needs to be accumulated before any trickery could be applied. Otherwise, it's just be a waste of their time.
photogr - A good race without issues? We are talking about NASCAR, right? Just kidding. I just want to see a race. I don't care if they drive Go-Karts. We're in Bristol. Bristol Baby. Where it is more about the track then the car anyway. I know that it is going to be a great race, but I just don't want it to be 4 hours of talking about the COT. I want to see Kurt Busch into the wall.
Texas guy - If your not cheating, your not trying. You have to bend the rules for every advantage that you can get. I understand wanting to level the playing field, but it will be years before we see any of that. What teams are going to advance faster with a new car? The ones with the money to spend, or the ones that won't spend their money? And this year more then any other is going to be the most expensive. The smaller teams are going to be thrown under the COT. They will have a far larger learning curve then the rest. I don't understand the leveling the playing field in the present tense.
Redline - I agree. I think that for awhile we will see the teams setting up just to get through inspection. And it will be a nightmare just to do that.
But then after some time, I think we will see more cheats then ever before. When you start with a new car your wiping the slate clean. NASCAR won't even know what cheating will be yet. They won't know what to look for, or where to look for it. I expect Knaus to be ahead of the curve. And that is a dangerous curve when most everyone else won't even find it.
Absolutely, let's get on with it. If huge problems crop up, they can be dealt with. Personally, I like the idea of less indestructible car - if you tag the wall and the wing takes a lap or two or more to fix, ... don't tag the wall again next race. And if the splitters/front air dam is getting torn up by the bumps in a particular track, I'm sure NASCAR will approve adjustments to that part of the formula.
Looking forward to the race (well, the first 20 and last 20 laps) this weekend.
The biggest factor with the COT that should be taken into account above anything else is safety. The COT is simply the safest race car ever built.
This week will not show the full potential of the COT, and we probably won't know its potential until the teams have had the chance to run a few races with it. There will definitely be a learning curve with the new car. I won't pass judgement on it until the teams have had a few weeks to work out the bugs.
Dave - See, I am with you. Stop talking about it. If there are huge problems, they will make adjustments. It is not like this will be the specs for ever. They will change it more then the Chase.
Manrub - I agree with you also. I think we have to give it some time to pass judgement. This is a huge deal for NASCAR. I don't think anyone expects it to be perfect, but the media is over hyping it as the last straw.
And I for one am all about safety for the drivers. When I first heard of the COT, I was looking forward to it. Now I am just sick of hearing about it.
Yep, upon further review, we had no splitter problems and no wing problems. The splitter I was pretty sure about since the trucks ran them. It surprised me that Darrell was concerned about it given he owned trucks.
The wing, I was open to seeing about. But the more I thought about all the wings in Grand Am, LeMans, IRL, CART, and F1, the better I felt about it too. I am pretty sure we will not hear anything about it next week.
There will probably still be some concern about its handling at larger tracks. But durability has been Bristol tested and it gets an A. It appears to me that most of the concern was fear of the unknown and media hype.

14Falcons - I can't remember who was talking about it at the race this Sunday, but they did bring up the front spliter being a problem if they got into another tire. Ripping the valve off, or straight cutting a hole in it. I can see that happening, since they drive them so close. But other then that, it did pass the test at Bristol. I know that the drivers are still pissed about the thing, but you can't please everybody. Or is it with NASCAR, you can't please anybody?
"It appears to me that most of the concern was fear of the unknown and media hype." - I could not agree more with you.
Again, I stand corrected. You had this one pegged.
I think even the tire cutting thing was only a su####ion that Darrell voiced. It may bear watching in the future, but again, it isn't a problem in trucks.
I just wish they would go ahead and implement this car full time this year and stop all this back and forth. It is too much on the teams. NASCAR needs to either go to the new car full time of the old one. Maybe this would help the racing this year. Because right now, unless you are a Hendricks car you are not going to win anything.
If the Gibbs cars every have a perfect race they might actually start winning again. But all these mistakes and parts failures are taking a toll on this organization.
You can't stop, or I will pass you. If you slow down, I will outlast you. But when your down, you won't find me laughing. Just one question, I might ask ya. And it might sound like a disaster. But can you make this thing go faster?
